Arteta confirms extended absences for Saliba, Gabriel and Mosquera

Arteta: Saliba, Gabriel and Mosquera are sidelined for a period, leaving Arsenal short at centre-back

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given a clear assessment of a developing defensive crisis, confirming William Saliba, Gabriel and Cristhian Mosquera will be unavailable for an extended period.

Saliba and Gabriel were absent for the recent clash, joined on the sidelines by Mosquera, who suffered an ankle injury in the Gunners’ 2–0 win over Brentford on Wednesday evening. Piero Hincapié and Jurriën Timber were selected in defence, flanked by Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White. That makeshift backline “could not withstand Unai Emery’s in-form Villans, though, and were left stunned when the final whistle blew in Birmingham.”

Arteta offered no encouraging medical updates after the match. “It is what it is. I think we have to cope with that [their absence]. We’re going to have to cope with that for a period of time as well.” Saliba has missed Arsenal’s last three matches after picking up a knock in training ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge. Gabriel has not featured since sustaining a thigh injury while representing Brazil during the November international window.

On Mosquera, Arteta was equally direct. “He’s going to be out for weeks. Unfortunately, it’s much more than what we expected, with the way he was feeling,” he said. Previous reports stated Mosquera would be out for at least six weeks, a timeline that leaves Arsenal extremely shorthanded in defence ahead of a busy holiday period.

Arteta acknowledged the wider implications for the title race and the squad. “We know that and the team has to be able to adapt that,” Arteta said of Arsenal’s injury woes. “Don’t look for excuses. Obviously, we know what [Saliba and Gabriel] bring, especially in games like this.”

He added there is hope Saliba could return in time for the trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, but no definitive timeline was offered.

Sixteen-Year-Old Max Dowman Becomes Arsenal’s Youngest FA Cup Starter

Max Dowman, 16, became Arsenal’s youngest FA Cup starter; Arteta praised his composure. showing more

Max Dowman started for Arsenal against Mansfield Town on Saturday lunchtime, becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to start an FA Cup game. The 16-year-old, recorded at 16 years and 66 days, helped the visitors to a hard-fought 2–1 win at Mansfield’s Field Mill.

Dowman’s display stood out. He was younger than every Arsenal goalscorer from that Under-18 cup clash and still conspired to tie Clough’s Mansfield side up in knots with the best performance of any visiting player during the match. The rugged turf presented a clear challenge for the senior squad, yet the teenager adapted quickest and carried the ball with an ease that belied his experience.

“Very proud,” Arteta gushed when confronted with the fine showing delivered by his school kid in midfield. “Max, I think, was exceptional.”

Arteta also placed the result in historical context. “I think Max is the youngest ever in the competition [for Arsenal],” Arteta correctly surmised, “and this competition has been going for a while, so it tells you how difficult that is.” Arsenal’s first FA Cup appearance came back in October 1889, almost 137 years ago. The club were then known as Royal Arsenal and were once mistakenly left out of the draw. Over the subsequent 13 decades Arsenal have won the competition 14 times, but never before had a starter as young as Dowman.

At senior level Dowman has been used on the right wing, but Arteta trusted him in a more central role against Mansfield, giving him licence to drift wide, collect the ball and drive forward. Observers noted his control on poor surfaces. “When the ball is bouncing all over the place and you have people in your back, the way he handles time and space and the touches that he takes, it’s just incredible,” Arteta beamed. “Especially at the speed that he delivers those actions, but that tells you the talent that we have.”

The start will be recorded in the club’s appearance records and offered a reminder of the pathway from academy to first team for promising teenagers.

Max Dowman Returns After Long Ankle Layoff as Arsenal U21s Lose to Ipswich

Max Dowman returned after nearly three months out with an ankle injury, starting U21s vs Ipswich…

Max Dowman returned to action on Friday night after almost three months out with an ankle injury, starting for Arsenal Under-21s in their narrow Premier League 2 defeat to Ipswich Town.

The 16-year-old had been sidelined since suffering an ankle problem in early December during a friendly. He had not played competitively since scoring twice for the U19s in a UEFA Youth League victory against Bayern Munich on Nov. 26.

Dowman occupied the No. 10 role and completed the first half against Ipswich before being withdrawn at the interval. The appearance marked a measured step back into match action after a lengthy absence.

With Arsenal pursuing four trophies this season, opportunities for the teenager at senior level could be limited for the remainder of the campaign. “Mikel Arteta wouldn’t have put Dowman into the squad, nor given him game time, if he didn’t believe the teenager was good enough.” At the same time, the club is conscious of the risk of exposing such a young player at a pressurised moment: throwing him in at the deep end would be reckless, especially at such a pressurised moment in the season.

Even when fully fit, Dowman had not been a regular for the senior team, often going unused on the bench in the Premier League. He has continued to accumulate experience within the club structure and has been selected in matches suited to his ongoing development.

Friday’s outing provided Dowman with his first competitive minutes since late November and a reminder of the balancing act facing Arsenal: protecting a promising teenager’s progress while managing immediate demands across multiple competitions.

Arsenal defender’s social post draws attention after 4-1 north London victory

After Arsenal’s 4-1 derby win Gabriel’s social post tagging Richarlison landed poorly with fans late

Gabriel Magalhães turned a routine celebration into a talking point after Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, posting a picture that tagged Spurs striker Richarlison and prompted a stream of reactions from team-mates.

The image showed Gabriel holding a four of hearts card, one for each goal his team scored in N17. Several of the defender’s team-mates left supportive comments beneath the post. The most pointed element was the decision to tag Richarlison, the Spurs striker who is a Brazilian compatriot of Gabriel’s.

On the pitch the evening was mixed for Gabriel. Arsenal led early through Eberechi Eze but were pegged back when Randal Kolo Muani cancelled that opener after the hosts had ceded possession during Tottenham’s aggressive early press. Viktor Gyökeres fired Arsenal back in front within two minutes of the restart and went on to claim a two-goal haul and the Player of the Match award; Mikel Arteta described it as his best performance in an Arsenal shirt.

Gabriel, by contrast, endured a less comfortable night. He formed part of the first Premier League backline to concede to Kolo Muani and was involved in the incident that later saw a second Kolo Muani finish ruled out. According to a lenient Peter Bankes, Kolo Muani had fouled Gabriel to get his shot away.

The social-media exchange was a continuation of a simmering feud. Gabriel missed the reverse fixture through injury. Despite his stunning goal in that earlier meeting, Richarlison again found himself on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline and was a late substitute on the weekend; he also tangled with Gabriel on the pitch before the digital taunt.

The story stretches back to a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong last July. Richarlison posted an image of himself with two trophies from that trip, and Gabriel later replied with a picture of three Player of the Match trophies he had won against Spurs over recent seasons. On Sunday evening Gabriel was pictured on the team coach with vending-machine items and a Player of the Match trophy displayed nearby. As many onlookers were quick to point out, Gabriel did not receive that award on the weekend.
