Premier League spending climbed beyond the $4 billion mark for the second straight summer in 2026, with total outlay across the division reaching $4.75 billion (£3.5 billion). That figure tops the roughly $4.1 billion (£3.1 billion) spent on new signings in 2025 and confirms another aggressive market across the league.

The final day of the window supplied the biggest individual headline, as Manchester City completed a $168.8 million (£125 million) joint-British transfer record move for Enzo Fernández. Activity at Aston Villa and Newcastle United also contributed to the increase, taking the league to levels not seen before.

Manchester City finished as the biggest spenders on $609.1 million (£458m). Chelsea were second with $470.7 million (£349m), followed by Tottenham Hotspur on $423.9 million (£302m). Newcastle United spent $362.2 million (£268m), Aston Villa $347.4 million (£256m), Liverpool $306.2 million (£198m) and Arsenal $262.8 million (£194m). Ipswich Town’s total came to $255.3 million (£171m).

Further down the list, Brighton & Hove Albion recorded $208.4 million (£154.5m), Hull City $203.2 million (£150.5m), and Manchester United $200.4 million (£148m). Coventry City stood at $171.8 million (£126m), Nottingham Forest at $159.9 million (£117.5m), and Brentford at $143.8 million (£106m). Everton, Fulham and Leeds United all finished above $100 million, while Crystal Palace and Bournemouth were below that threshold.

Sunderland were the lowest spenders at $88.7 million (£65.7m). The totals were compiled by Transfermarkt.com and last updated on Sept. 2 at 6:00 a.m. ET, with fees converted at the prevailing rate.

Manchester City’s Enzo Maresca-led rebuild finished above $600 million overall, with Fernández and Ndiaye joined by Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Allan. Chelsea, after a miserable 2025-26 season, were the second biggest spenders and made Morgan Rogers their key addition, with the Aston Villa player arriving for a club record $159.6 million. Chelsea were one of 11 Premier League clubs to break their transfer record this summer.

Tottenham also broke their transfer record twice, signing Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali for a combined $252 million. Ipswich Town’s $255.3 million left them eighth, while Sunderland ended bottom despite signing Malick Fofana from Lyon on Deadline Day.

Premier League clubs have long shown a willingness to spend heavily on teenagers rather than wait for them to emerge through their own systems. The biggest deals have frequently involved familiar names, but the record list is not limited to English football’s most powerful sides.

The latest benchmark was set during the 2026-27 summer transfer window, when Manchester City paid £86 million ($117 million) for 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi. The fee reflected both his rapid rise at Lille and his excellent World Cup with Morocco, placing him at the top of the list of the most expensive teenage signings in Premier League history.

Manchester United also appear prominently. Their £52 million ($67.6 million) move for Leny Yoro from Lille sits near the top end of the rankings, and it is only a little above the £50.4 million ($77.1 million) they spent on Anthony Martial from Monaco in 2015. That Martial deal, according to the Manchester Evening News, was based on the conditional add-ons he actually achieved at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are represented more than once. Roméo Lavia’s switch from Southampton in 2023 cost £58 million ($73.9 million) and stands second on the list. Geovany Quenda and Jorrel Hato are also included among the top 10, underlining how active the club has been in this market.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers all feature through notable teenage moves. Luka Vušković joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Tottenham Hotspur for £46 million ($62.5 million), while Tyler Dibling’s move from Southampton to Everton and Fábio Silva’s transfer from Porto to Wolverhampton Wanderers complete the lower end of the ranking.

The omission of Estêvão is explained by his transfer structure, which included an initial fee of £29 million ($37 million) from Palmeiras and could rise to £51.4 million ($78 million) with add-ons.

The 2026/27 Premier League season has opened with the usual sense of expectation, but the transfer market has remained just as busy. With the window still open, clubs have already pushed spending to extraordinary levels, building on a summer in which the division again outspent the rest of Europe. Much of the business has focused on proven Premier League talent, though several new arrivals from elsewhere are expected to make an immediate impression.

Arsenal addressed a clear need in midfield by bringing in Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United. After a title-winning campaign built on defensive stability, Mikel Arteta wanted added thrust and authority in the middle of the pitch. Guimarães is expected to partner Declan Rice and give Arsenal more energy, more vertical passing and quicker progression through central areas.

Chelsea went big for Morgan Rogers, paying a club-record fee to prise him from Aston Villa. The England international had been linked with Arsenal, but Chelsea moved decisively. In Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, Rogers looks well suited to operate alongside Cole Palmer, with both likely to compete for influence between the lines.

Tottenham Hotspur have rebuilt their midfield at serious cost, adding Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali after losing Yves Bissouma and João Palhinha. The expectation is that both will contribute right away, giving Roberto De Zerbi a new combination to work with after a difficult season.

Liverpool believe they have secured a major defensive talent in Jérémy Jacquet. Cautious management followed his January arrival and shoulder injury, but his brief friendly outing against Como hinted at why supporters are so encouraged. He is expected to line up alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Brentford’s record signing Mamadou Sangaré arrives with strong numbers behind him, having finished among Ligue 1’s leading tacklers and duel-winners. His intensity fits Brentford’s model, and he may prove far more than a short-term bargain.

Coventry City’s Caleb Yirenkyi brings physicality and defensive presence, while Christos Tzolis, Tarik Muharemović and Carlos Baleba also arrive with strong expectations attached. At Manchester United, the midfield rebuild continues, and supporters are already treating the work as a success.
