Opta Model Turns Tottenham–West Ham Finish Into Straight Relegation Shootout

Opta gives Tottenham a 19.54% chance to stay and West Ham an 80.46% relegation risk. Final fixtures.

Two late incidents and a small margin of error have left Tottenham and West Ham embroiled in a direct relegation fight with only two matches to play. Georginio Rutter’s 95th-minute goal in Roberto De Zerbi’s first home game and a stoppage-time equaliser conceded to Brighton & Hove Albion have combined with a separate penalty incident involving Mathys Tel and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to leave the picture finely balanced.

Opta’s supercomputer returns a stark assessment. Tottenham sit on 38 actual points with a projected 40.47 and a 19.54% chance of relegation. West Ham are on 36 actual points, predicted to finish on 38.62 with an 80.46% chance of relegation. Burnley and Wolves are confirmed as relegated in Opta’s scenarios, both shown with 100% relegation probability and projected points of 22.78 and 20.41 respectively.

“It’s going to be tough,” Nuno Espírito Santo admitted when reflecting on West Ham’s chances of survival after Sunday’s bitter reverse against Arsenal . Tough, but not impossible: Opta’s model sends the Hammers tumbling out in four of five scenarios.

Spurs remain the stronger side in the calculations. The projection gives them a reasonable edge, though only two points separate the teams in expected totals, leaving the contest liable to be decided on the final day. “It will be tough until the last minute against Everton,” he warned after getting a firm grasp of just how mentally fragile his roster is.

There is a clear route by which Tottenham could secure safety before the last Sunday in May. Should West Ham fail to beat Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, Spurs would mathematically guarantee survival with a win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, May 19. Even so, history offers a warning: Tottenham have recorded just one win at Stamford Bridge in the last 36 years. Danny Drinkwater was on the Chelsea roster which last lost a home game to Tottenham on April Fool’s Day 2018.

With margins minimal, the remaining fixtures and those single decisive moments are set to determine which capital club remains in the Premier League for 2025/26.

Three Real Madrid players Chelsea could sign if Xabi Alonso is appointed

Alonso-linked Chelsea could target Fran García, Antonio Rüdiger and Eduardo Camavinga this summer…

Chelsea face a fragile run-in this season where only lifting the FA Cup could salvage what the club calls a nightmare campaign. Reports have suggested the Blues are “exploring a deal” for Xabi Alonso, and if the 44-year-old is installed as permanent manager he would arrive with recent Real Madrid contacts he knows well. Alonso lasted just 233 days on the Bernabéu touchline, but remains an attractive option to steady Stamford Bridge.

Three players who feature in the speculation are Fran García, Antonio Rüdiger and Eduardo Camavinga. Fran García had already tried to engineer a loan move to Bournemouth in the winter window before Real Madrid reportedly tore up the deal. His minutes at the Bernabéu have dwindled behind Ferland Mendy and Álvaro Carreras. There is room for García at Madrid should Mendy recover, but the left back has openly considered the Premier League. Chelsea possess Marc Cucurella, Jorrel Hato and Malo Gusto on the left, although Cucurella has been linked with a move away, which could create an opening. García thrived as a left wing-back under Alonso and would fit naturally into a 3-4-2-1 system the manager favors.

Antonio Rüdiger is out of contract at season’s end and negotiations to extend his stay in Madrid have not progressed. A return to Stamford Bridge has been mooted, with Chelsea in need of defensive reinforcements. Rüdiger enjoyed success in a blue shirt previously and would represent a cost effective short-term option if he becomes a free agent. The 33-year-old center back brings Premier League experience and a combative style that could be immediately useful.

Eduardo Camavinga has been linked with several Premier League suitors, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. After a difficult season he may seek more regular minutes. The 23-year-old has already won two Champions League titles and remains a high-upside option. If Enzo Fernández departs Chelsea this summer, perhaps for Real Madrid, the club could look to a player with Camavinga’s profile to help fill the midfield gap.

JJ Gabriel: Under-18 Player of the Season and the pathway to United’s first team

JJ Gabriel, 15, won the first Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season award for United. record.

JJ Gabriel has been named the inaugural Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season after a breakthrough campaign at the age of 15. The award acknowledges performances that have already seen Gabriel training with Manchester United’s senior squad on multiple occasions this season.

Discussion about the immediate next steps has centred on the summer preseason tour, which will visit Finland, Norway, Sweden and Republic of Ireland. Additional safeguarding would be required because Gabriel will not turn 16 until October. Under-18s manager Darren Fletcher said the final call will rest with people higher up the club, but he made his position clear. “JJ’s more than capable [of going on preseason],” he said.

Fletcher added further context about managing young players around senior exposure. “We want him to go up there and thrive. We need to get him in the position to do that, and even if he doesn’t, that’s not the end of the world. We always need to be careful. They need to experience that, but it’s making sure it’s at the right time, and understanding why and what the needs are. Once you get thrown in, you’re judged very, very quickly, rightly or wrongly.”

Regulation means Gabriel cannot appear in Premier League fixtures during the same campaign in which he turned 15, which occurred in October. That restriction makes a competitive senior debut no earlier than next season. A first-team appearance on or before Oct. 24, 2026 would see Gabriel surpass the long-standing club record set by David Gaskell, who debuted aged 16 years and 19 days in 1956.

Other age-related milestones cited in context include Angel Gomes, who Premier League–debuted at 16 years and 263 days in 2017; Chido Obi, named in a Premier League starting XI last season at 17 years and 156 days; and Norman Whiteside, United’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years and eight days in 1982. All of those marks are described as attainable targets for Gabriel.

Beyond the statistics, Gabriel’s own remarks underline his outlook. “I’d say [the Academy] helped me mature a lot. They help me to be very humble and keep my feet on the ground,” he said. “I’ve got to say you’ve got to maintain working out on the training pitch every single day, giving it my all and working hard in the gym to stay fit and not get injured.” Fletcher’s praise for his attitude reinforces that the club sees both talent and temperament in the teenager.

Haaland rested as Guardiola reshapes City XI for Palace meeting

Haaland rested for FA Cup final; Marmoush starts as Guardiola reshuffles ahead of Palace clash. Wed.

Manchester City arrive at their midweek home fixture with Crystal Palace in a simple but brutal position: they must win their remaining three games and hope Arsenal drop points in either of their last two fixtures if City are to clinch the title. With that pressure, it was notable when Erling Haaland did not start against Palace.

The omission is not injury related. It appears to be a precautionary move by Pep Guardiola to conserve his leading striker ahead of the 2025–26 FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday at Wembley. Haaland came into the Palace game having contributed a goal and an assist in City’s 3–0 win over Brentford at the weekend, and Guardiola is likely to call on him from the bench if the need arises.

Guardiola made other unexpected selection choices. Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku, both regular attacking options, were also on the bench. More strikingly, Rodri and Nico O’Reilly were not included in the squad selected for Oliver Glasner’s side.

The consequences are clear. Anything but a win on Wednesday would hand Arsenal the chance to become Premier League champions should they beat Burnley next Monday. Guardiola’s rotation is therefore a calculated gamble.

Omar Marmoush, who scored his first goal for City since early March at the weekend, replaces Haaland in the starting XI. Phil Foden and Savinho are given starting places, with Antoine Semenyo completing the attack. For the first time since Jan. 4, Croatia international Joško Gvardiol is back and will start at left back. Summer signing Rayan Aït-Nouri will fill in for O’Reilly and push up higher on the field at left winger.

Guardiola’s decisions risk undermining City’s immediate objective, but the manager is relying on squad depth as he balances Premier League imperatives against the FA Cup final. The selection is a clear signal of priorities and of the fine margins at play as the season reaches its climax.
