Manchester City are reported to be pursuing Jeremy Monga, a 16-year-old winger who primarily operates on the left flank. The Athletic says City are “working to complete a deal” for the teenager. Leicester will be able to offer Monga a first professional contract on his 17th birthday next week, which will allow the Foxes to command a transfer fee.

That fee is thought to be in the region of £10 million ($13.4 million). That figure is claimed to be too high for Arsenal, and sources suggest the price has left the door open for Manchester City to move in. The Gunners had been in “club-to-club contact” with Leicester, but are now described by Fabrizio Romano as being “definitely out of the race.”

The report credits Manchester City’s new boss Enzo Maresca with “driving” interest in Monga. Maresca was reportedly aware of the youngster from his time in charge at Leicester. Monga did not make a first-team appearance while Maresca was manager during the 2023–24 season, but he apparently left an impression on the Italian coach.

How Monga would fit into Manchester City’s plans next season is unclear. Jérémy Doku is established on the left wing, and City have a group of versatile attackers who have been used to fill in across the front line. Omar Marmoush and Phil Foden are named among those capable of covering wide positions, which leaves uncertainty over an immediate path to regular first-team minutes for the youngster.

The situation centres on Leicester’s ability to demand a fee once Monga signs his first pro contract and whether Manchester City will be prepared to meet that valuation. Arsenal’s earlier interest, their club-level contact with Leicester, and City’s reported drive to conclude a deal are the key developments in this transfer story.

Manchester City have announced the appointment of Enzo Maresca. His mid-season resignation from Chelsea prompted a formal response from the Blues and matching statements from Maresca and City.

A Chelsea statement set out the club’s account in detail:

“In Autumn last year, the Club was informed by our former Head Coach that there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season,” a Chelsea statement read.

“It became clear to us that it was his strong desire to succeed Guardiola and that he was fully committed to pursuing the opportunity, despite the fact he was under a long-term contract which he had no right to terminate.

“In December 2025, our Head Coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position. Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity, despite having just arrived at Chelsea the year before.

“No club wants to change its head coach midway through a season. However, in light of his decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities through to the end of the season, the Club was left with no choice but to protect our players, our supporters, and the Badge and accept his resignation.

“In the circumstances and given the mutual respect between clubs, a confidential settlement has been reached with Manchester City , which includes the payment of compensation. A confidential settlement has also been reached with the former Head Coach under which he will pay compensation.

“Looking forward to next season, in Xabi Alonso, we have a Manager who has an exceptional football mind and is a professional of the highest integrity. He has all the attributes to deliver the success the Club’s supporters deserve and expect.”

Maresca issued his own statement addressing his departure and his move to City:

“At the end of December 2025, I made the difficult decision to leave Chelsea,” he reflected. “The decision was only mine. My resignation from Chelsea opened a path for me to join Manchester City, which is a club I knew very well. I am ecstatic that I have now joined Manchester City.

“I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologize for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish. I was treated well by everyone at Chelsea and together we achieved great success and memories that I will always treasure.

“I am grateful to the club, the owners and the fans for giving me the opportunity.”

City also commented on the discussions that preceded the appointment:

“We can confirm that confidential conversations took place between select representatives of City and Enzo Maresca in Autumn and Winter of 2025, while he was Chelsea FC’s Head Coach, regarding the possibility of him returning to City in a transitional leadership coaching capacity should Pep Guardiola decide to leave.

“We acknowledge Chelsea’s statement regarding the context of Enzo’s departure from Chelesa. We also acknowledge the context in which permission for discussions was given, and we recognize that his departure mid-season was disruptive to Chelsea’s season.

Manchester City have agreed terms to sign 23-year-old midfielder Elliot Anderson in a transfer that sets new club and British records. The fee places Anderson among the most expensive moves in the game, with only Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last summer and the amounts Paris Saint-Germain paid for Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. exceeding what City have spent to secure the England international.

Nottingham Forest initially rejected City’s opening offer, but City persisted and ultimately exceeded the $137.5 million (£105 million) Arsenal paid for Declan Rice three summers ago to land Anderson. Manchester City view Anderson as a natural successor to Rodri in the centre of midfield. Rodri remains at the club but has turned 30, has been hampered by injuries over the last two seasons and has been linked with a potential departure. Anderson is more than six years younger and comes into the move after a campaign in which he played every Premier League match for Forest, starting all but one.

Further activity is expected from City before the summer window closes.
