Cucurella Commits to Chelsea as Maresca Signals Need for Defensive Cover
Cucurella signs new Chelsea deal; Colwill to miss most of 2025-26. Maresca seeks central cover soon.
Chelsea have reached an internal agreement to extend Marc Cucurella’s deal, with reports saying the left-sided defender has signed new paperwork. Fabrizio Romano reports Chelsea have “completed the agreement” with Cucurella. The 27-year-old’s existing contract runs until 2028 and he is described as an important player for the present and future and a team leader behind the scenes.
The club has also secured longer-term continuity in its sporting structure. Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, alongside recruitment officials Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, have signed extensions to 2031. Those contracts are being framed as a “show of faith” and “recognition” for work carried out amid criticism of recruitment in the early BlueCo revolution.
Chelsea have balanced heavy spending with profitable sales. This summer the club offloaded five unwanted players for a minimum of £20 million each and agreed a deal with Arsenal for Noni Madueke worth up to £52 million. Those funds helped finance incoming signings including João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato, Liam Delap and Estêvão while keeping net spend comparatively low.
Plans on further reinforcement may accelerate after a serious injury to Levi Colwill. The 22-year-old was hurt in the club’s first training session back at Cobham and is likely to miss the majority of 2025-26 after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament. Manager Enzo Maresca addressed the situation directly and outlined the club’s options.
You know how important Levi has been for us last season, for the way we want to play. We said many times that we are able to create chances and to attack in the right way, if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of our build-up and now he is out.
We are trying to find a solution internally, but the club knows exactly what I think and we will see what happens.
I think we need a central defender.
The Italian added: “We build with Levi in the middle. Last year, we played 64 games and we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin. Now Levi is out, the only one that can do that job well is Tosin.
“Also we have players that unfortunately, like Wes or Benoit, they have in this moment some problems and this is the reason why I said that the club knows exactly what I think about central defenders.”

Five realistic destinations as Balogun prepares for a new challenge
Balogun linked with Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, Juventus or Dortmund as transfer interest grows….
Folarin Balogun has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in the post-World Cup market, with Monaco receiving interest from clubs across Europe and the player reported to be keen on a fresh challenge. Any sale could become the second-highest for a U.S. player, behind only Christian Pulisic’s $73 million switch to Chelsea in 2019.
The forward’s profile suits several different needs. Arsenal represent a natural fit. Balogun came through Arsenal ’s academy but was sold without ever really getting a chance in the first team. Two goals in just 209 senior minutes was impressive but Balogun left with a sense of unfinished business with the Gunners. Arsenal spent big on Viktor Gyökeres last summer but ended the season with Kai Havertz as their starting striker, leaving many believing manager Mikel Arteta may not be entirely satisfied with the options available to him. Bringing Balogun, a homegrown talent, back to the club would be a great move for Arsenal, although whether the 24-year-old would accept such a move without a guarantee of regular starts is a different matter. He has, however, spoken glowingly about the opportunity to be closer to family on brief returns to London.
Chelsea remain a potential suitor despite a crowded forward line. João Pedro has been an excellent addition, but Liam Delap’s time at Stamford Bridge has been a massive disappointment and could be coming to an end this summer. Returning loanee Nicolas Jackson and new signing Emmanuel Emegha add to a bloated forward line. Much will depend on the opinion of new manager Xabi Alonso, who has been given significant influence in Chelsea’s transfer dealings after agreeing to replace Liam Rosenior.
Newcastle could offer minutes and resources. Last summer the Magpies spent heavily on strikers, bringing in Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa for around $164 million (£124 million), yet Eddie Howe quickly lost faith in both and is thought to be chasing another starting striker.
Juventus face turnover up front after a mixed window. Jonathan David was solid at best, Loïs Openda is available following a triggered purchase clause, and Dušan Vlahović could depart, creating room for change and a link-up with international teammate McKennie.
Finally, Borussia Dortmund’s record of developing forwards and the chance to capitalise on World Cup momentum make them an appealing option. Across these five destinations, Balogun’s next move will hinge on Monaco’s valuation and the guarantees each club can offer.

Man City set to pay $22.8m to Chelsea to finalise Enzo Maresca appointment
Man City set to pay $22.8m to Chelsea to settle Enzo Maresca move and finalise his three-year deal .
Manchester City have moved to settle the financial and legal issues blocking Enzo Maresca’s arrival, with reports indicating a payment of $22.8 million to Chelsea. A verbal agreement between City and Maresca has been in place for almost a month, with Maresca expected to sign a three-year contract to take over for Pep Guardiola at Etihad Stadium.
Maresca’s coaching path is well documented. He was Guardiola’s assistant during City’s treble-winning campaign in 2022–23, left to manage Leicester City and guided them back to the Premier League in 2023–24, and then joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024. His time at Stamford Bridge lasted one and a half seasons and ended abruptly on New Year’s Day.
Maresca left Chelsea with three and a half years remaining on the five-year deal he signed in 2024. Chelsea did not frame his departure as an outright sacking. “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company,” the club’s statement read . “With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”
Reports also say City and Maresca entered negotiations while he was still Chelsea manager and without the Blues’ permission. That prompted Chelsea to consider reporting City to the Premier League for an illegal approach and to weigh legal action against Maresca for breach of contract.
City appear prepared to meet Chelsea’s demand to resolve the dispute and complete the hire. The $22.8 million figure is notably higher than an earlier reported $13 million (£10 million). According to ESPN, a settlement is close and Maresca could be officially unveiled as City’s new manager as early as this week.
Chelsea will receive a significant fee at a time they need funds after failing to qualify for European competition next season. City, for their part, expect Maresca to assume the challenge of succeeding Guardiola and to lead the Sky Blues into their next phase.

Real Madrid Block Chelsea as Álvaro Carreras Is Deemed ‘Untouchable’
Real Madrid describe Álvaro Carreras “untouchable”, forcing Chelsea to widen their left-back search.
Real Madrid have made clear they will not entertain offers for Álvaro Carreras this summer, a development that complicates Chelsea’s search for a replacement for Marc Cucurella. According to AS, the Spanish club consider Carreras “untouchable” and are not prepared to move him on only a year after his arrival.
Carreras arrived from Benfica last summer for $58.42 million (€50 million) and was handed a six-year contract. Los Blancos view him as part of a recent investment and, per the report, will only consider offers that would see him leave at a financial loss on that initial outlay. Mourinho is expected to rely on Carreras to compete with Cucurella for the starting left back position next season.
Real Madrid also face uncertainty in their left-back ranks beyond Carreras. Ferland Mendy’s recurring injury problems have left the Frenchman as an unreliable alternative, and he could be on the way out of the club. Fran García, a La Fábrica graduate, has attracted interest from several teams across Europe and may also depart. With two of the four left backs in the squad potentially headed for exits, Carreras provides necessary depth and competition.
For Chelsea, Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid removes one target and Carreras’s unavailability leaves the Blues with limited options. At present, 20-year-old Jorrel Hato is the only recognised left back at Xabi Alonso’s disposal. Hato was also used regularly at centre back during his debut season at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have secured the signing of Denner Evangelista, but the 18-year-old is considered a long-term prospect and is not expected to join the first team this summer. Reuniting with Lewis Hall has been suggested as a possibility, but it appears unlikely given that the same ownership group previously allowed the Cobham graduate to leave. As the window progresses, Chelsea will need to widen their search for a left back while Real Madrid maintain a firm stance on Carreras.
