Gameweek 8 Preview: low-scoring trend and the fixtures that could shift the table

Set-pieces dominate early 2025/26; open-play goals are down. Preview and predictions for Gameweek 8.

“The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters,” Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci once said.

Set-pieces have become increasingly influential early in 2025/26. Open-play goals are down, averaging 1.69 per game through seven gameweeks, the second-lowest rate in the competition’s history. As the second break of the campaign approaches, teams and managers will hope for a change in tone and a return to more fluid attacking football.

Nottingham Forest arrive at the City Ground under pressure after a 2–0 reverse at St. James’ Park two weeks ago. Idealist Ange Postecoglou opted for conservatism in a bid to secure a result, but his Nottingham Forest team instead limped to a 2–0 defeat. The Aussie coach is winless in his new role, and there is talk that defeat at the City Ground on Saturday could be the final straw, with Sean Dyche earmarked as a potential replacement. Chelsea, who struck late to beat the champions before the break, are inconsistent under Enzo Maresca and remain without talisman Cole Palmer.

Manchester City look dependent on Erling Haaland, whose early-season form gives them a chance to restore their position at the summit. Everton travel to the Etihad without the ineligible Jack Grealish. Brighton and Newcastle occupy similar mid-table positions; the Seagulls have won just once at home this term, while Newcastle have not always thrived away under Eddie Howe.

Bournemouth will turn to Antoine Semenyo against Crystal Palace, whose 18-game unbeaten run was ended by Everton two weeks ago thanks to Grealish’s late strike. Sunderland, whose momentum was halted by Manchester United before the break, face a Wolverhampton Wanderers side still seeking a first win.

Burnley have taken one point from their last five and host Daniel Farke’s Leeds United at Turf Moor. League leaders Arsenal travel to Craven Cottage, where Fulham have troubled them in recent meetings but Mikel Arteta’s side appear to have more options this term.

The Premier League’s Record Transfer Fees, Ranked

A rundown of the Premier League’s biggest transfer fees, from costly gambles to record-breaking moves.

Published

on

Premier League spending has long been extravagant, but the numbers have become even more striking over the past decade. The competition’s traditional heavyweights continue to set the pace, using their financial strength to compete for the game’s biggest names year after year.

Here is a look at the 10 highest transfer fees in Premier League history, including add-ons.

Chelsea twice featured prominently in Romelu Lukaku’s career arc, first signing him from Anderlecht in 2011 and later bringing him back from Inter for just under £100 million. That second move proved costly in every sense. Lukaku had been prolific for Inter, helping them to the Serie A title in 2020–21, but he could not reproduce that level in west London. After only one full season, he was loaned out and later sold, with his Premier League return yielding eight goals.

July 2026 brought Sandro Tonali into Tottenham Hotspur’s record books after a move from Newcastle United. His rise had been well established at St James’ Park, especially after returning from a 10-month gambling ban in August 2024. Tonali helped Newcastle back into the Champions League and played a major role in ending their long wait for silverware with the Carabao Cup title.

Jack Grealish arrived at Manchester City for £100 million in 2021 and remained influential despite never fully hitting the levels many expected. Declan Rice’s £105 million transfer to Arsenal drew attention at the time, yet he has justified the fee through his all-round midfield impact, particularly as Arsenal reached the title in 2025–26.

Enzo Fernández’s £106 million move to Chelsea has brought mixed reaction, though his quality has surfaced in difficult circumstances. Moisés Caicedo followed at £115 million including add-ons after an outstanding season with Brighton & Hove Albion, and has since re-established himself among the division’s leading midfielders.

Elliot Anderson’s value surged from his £35 million move to Nottingham Forest, before Manchester City made him their club-record signing at £116 million. Liverpool’s arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen was then the record, but his first season at Anfield was slow, even if he still produced 15 goal involvements and signs of promise.

Oliver Glasner Confirmed as Nottingham Forest Head Coach Amid Managerial Turnover

Oliver Glasner named Nottingham Forest head coach as the club appoints its fifth manager in a year.

Published

on

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Oliver Glasner as their newest manager. The club announced Glasner will take charge as head coach as they prepare for the coming season.

“I’m delighted to join Nottingham Forest as head coach,” Glasner told club channels. “From my very first conversations with the owner and the leadership team, it was evident to me that they have a clear vision for this football club and complete trust and belief in me and my staff to build a strong future together over the long term.

“That trust and shared commitment, together with the potential that I see within the squad, were key factors for me and I am excited about what we can achieve together.

“Nottingham Forest is a club with incredible prestige and history, a two-time European Champion with one of the most passionate fan bases in football. Our aim is to build a team that can help take the club to the next level in the years ahead and that our supporters can be proud of.

“My immediate focus is on meeting the players and staff and getting to work as we begin pre-season. I’m excited for the future and will work tirelessly to represent this great club with pride and to bring success on the pitch. I can’t wait to get started.”

The appointment comes after a turbulent period at the club. Twelve months ago Forest finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the Conference League, albeit with disappointment at not reaching the Champions League or Europa League. In September 2025, then-manager Nuno Espírito Santo clashed with owner Evangelos Marinakis and was dismissed.

Ange Postecoglou lasted eight games, Sean Dyche managed 25 matches, and Pereira was given 20 matches to address a relegation battle. Glasner now becomes the fifth permanent manager since the start of the 2025–26 season, with Marinakis believing the team will benefit from hiring a natural “winner.”

“In our discussions with Oliver, it was clear that we share the same vision, the same ambition and the same relentless desire to succeed,” Marinakis stated. “He has consistently demonstrated throughout his career that he can build outstanding teams and deliver success against the strongest competition.”

Nottingham Forest part company with Vitor Pereira as Oliver Glasner set to take over

Forest dismiss Vitor Pereira after securing Premier League safety; Oliver Glasner looks set to join.

Published

on

Nottingham Forest have dismissed Vitor Pereira despite the manager delivering Premier League safety after arriving in February. Pereira took charge with Forest 17th and three points above the relegation zone, and the side confirmed their survival with two games to spare, finishing five points adrift.

A mutual break clause in Pereira’s contract was triggered just two minutes before it expired at midnight on Tuesday, June 30, a move later confirmed by the club. The Portuguese had a mixed spell: two opening defeats were followed by a seven-game unbeaten run that secured safety. Forest also reached the Europa League semifinals under his management before suffering a heavy defeat to Aston Villa.

Pereira reacted to the decision, saying: “Naturally, I am disappointed and saddened. I truly believed in what we were building together, and I leave with a sense of pride in everything we achieved over the past months.

“I leave Nottingham Forest with no bitterness or resentment—only respect, gratitude and wonderful memories.”

Forest thanked Pereira and his staff in an official statement: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Vítor and his team for their hard work and commitment throughout their time at the Club,” part of Forest’s statement read.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest is grateful for their considerable efforts and for the relationships they forged with our players, staff and supporters.

“We thank them all for their service and wish them every success in the next stage of their careers.”

Pereira’s record at the club across 20 matches reads: 8 wins, 6 draws and 6 losses, a win rate of 40 and points-per-game of 1.5. Fabrizio Romano is among those to report that Forest will appoint former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner as Pereira’s successor. Glasner is remembered as the Eagles’ greatest-ever manager, having guided the club to FA Cup and Conference League glory during his time in south London. He confirmed back in January that he’d be moving on at the end of the 2025–26 season. He had been considered by Manchester United before they stuck with Michael Carrick, and Forest regard the impending appointment of the 51-year-old as a major coup. Glasner is expected to sign a three-year deal at the City Ground.
