Fernandes Future Puts United at a Clear Decision Point
Fernandes’s future is drawing interest, but his record and influence still make United’s choice clear.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is entering a defining stretch of his career, with interest building from abroad and his value to the club still obvious.
Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan is among the sides described as “keen” on the Portugal international, while BBC Sport also notes strong interest from Juventus and Galatasaray. Fernandes is due to turn 32 early next month, yet his output suggests he remains very much at the top of his game.
His record-breaking year underlined that point. Fernandes delivered 21 Premier League assists, setting a new single-season benchmark that had stood for 23 years. His role has evolved from being a high-volume scorer to becoming a creator and organiser, even though his earlier spell as a prolific midfield goalscorer remains part of his profile. Across his final 18 months at Sporting CP and his first 18 months in Manchester, he scored 88 goals in all competitions.
Last season brought only nine goals, although that figure should be viewed in context because the club played its fewest matches in 111 years. Even so, his influence in chance creation and general play increased, and he has also grown into an outstanding leader on and off the pitch. He is widely respected and well liked throughout the club.
Fernandes’s contract contains a release clause of $76.8 million (£57 million), although that clause is not available to English clubs. If an overseas side were to activate it, United would face a significant decision. The BBC report also says it “remains to be seen how United react if a bid is received.” There is no indication that he will leave before the summer window closes.
There is also no suggestion that Fernandes wants out. On the contrary, the same BBC report says his wish is to stay, “potentially for the remainder of his career.” Even if a new deal is not agreed, the option in his contract gives United added protection against the possibility of free agency next summer.
If renewal talks do begin, Fernandes would have a strong case to be United’s top earner. His salary is reported at $16.8 million (£12 million) after a 25% rise tied to Champions League qualification, with Marcus Rashford close to $23 million (£17 million).
