Four realistic exits for Marc Cucurella and how they stack up

Cucurella weighs four suitors while Chelsea set terms; Barcelona appeals on emotional grounds. still.

Marc Cucurella is preparing for a summer decision as Chelsea appear willing to accommodate his desire to leave, with interest reported from at least four clubs. Sources cited by The Athletic link the left back to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Manchester City. Chelsea are thought to be open to a sale provided any buyer meets the club’s financial conditions.

Manchester City emerge as a logical candidate in these reports because of managerial movement and squad context. Enzo Maresca is expected to succeed Pep Guardiola and his prior meetings with City executives were noted in reporting about his departure from Chelsea. Cucurella reacted at the time: “The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” the left back fretted. “These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision.” City signed Rayan Aït-Nouri for around $43 million last summer and saw Nico O’Reilly rise from the academy. The available reporting suggests it would be surprising if City spent again to displace Aït-Nouri or stash another expensive left back on the bench.

Barcelona represent the sentimental option. Cucurella spent seven years within Barça’s system before a seven-minute senior debut in 2017, his last appearance for the first team at that time. Speaking in March while with Spain he said it “would be difficult to reject” Barcelona. “And not just for me,” he told assembled media while representing Spain. “I would have to think about my family as well. If [an offer] comes, it comes, and we will have to see what decision we would make.” Financial constraints and an already stocked left-back area, with Alejandro Balde and Gerard Martín involved and João Cancelo’s future unresolved, were highlighted as possible barriers.

Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid are also credited with interest, keeping options in La Liga alive. Any move will depend on Chelsea’s valuation and the suitors’ willingness to meet those terms. For now, the player’s preference and the clubs’ finances will decide which of these four paths becomes reality.

Five transfer sagas set to dominate the summer window

Five transfer sagas to follow this summer: Diomande, Fernández, Álvarez, Anderson, Wharton. Details.

Summer will bring the familiar long negotiations and headline-grabbing speculation as clubs pursue a handful of marquee targets. Here are five stories most likely to shape the window.

Yan Diomande’s rise has been swift. Up until November 2024 he was in a youth academy in Florida, then moved from the United States to Leganés before an eye-catching switch to RB Leipzig last summer. The 19-year-old has recorded 13 goals and nine assists in an astonishing debut season with Leipzig and is now attracting Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. Reports value him around €100 million (£87m, $116m). Diomande will represent Côte d’Ivoire at the World Cup, a factor likely to complicate and prolong any transfer.

Enzo Fernández publicly cast doubt over his future during the March international break after flirting with Real Madrid. Speculation over his Chelsea exit has intensified with Manchester City joining the race and Enzo Maresca seen as the likely successor to Pep Guardiola. There is a sense that Chelsea’s final day defeat to Sunderland was Fernández’s last outing for the club, and he looks increasingly unlikely to spearhead Xabi Alonso’s revolution at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are reportedly demanding around £120 million ($161 million), and the player’s participation at the World Cup for Argentina will delay any resolution.

Julián Álvarez remains a central talking point. Having stayed at Atlético Madrid for the 2025/26 campaign, the 26-year-old appears destined to leave Spain’s capital before next season. Barcelona are favourites and are preparing to launch a first official bid of roughly €100 million (£87m, $116m), though Atlético may seek more. Arsenal are also interested despite already possessing Viktor Gyökeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Elliot Anderson’s stock has risen sharply after a breakthrough season with Nottingham Forest and an England call-up for the World Cup. Interest from Manchester City and Manchester United looks significant, with City seemingly in the driving seat despite Guardiola’s exit. It could take about £100 million ($134 million) to complete that move. Anderson’s midfield compatriot Adam Wharton finished the campaign by leading Crystal Palace to Conference League glory, adding to the FA Cup won last term, and Palace face Europe-wide interest. Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd have all been mentioned, with Palace valuing Wharton at approximately £100 million ($134 million).

Where Should Julián Álvarez Move This Summer: Arsenal, Barcelona or PSG?

Álvarez linked with Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG; Barcelona offers the clearest sporting fit. In 2026.

Atlético Madrid centre forward Julián Álvarez has emerged as the centrepiece of a major summer transfer storyline, with Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain all reported to be interested. Some reports suggest Álvarez has informed Atléti of a desire to leave this summer, and Diego Simeone recently refused to deny the possibility of his talisman leaving the club. “It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julián Álvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG … because he’s very good” Simeone said in late April.

The River Plate product is attracting attention from some of the continent’s biggest clubs. On paper the choices present contrasting appeals. Arsenal finished the 2025–26 season by ending a 22-year drought and lifting the Premier League title. The Gunners’ defensive base is a major strength, but their forward line lacks a truly elite difference-maker. Álvarez, who already has Premier League experience, would represent an upgrade on Viktor Gyökeres and be preferred to Kai Havertz for many observers. He could pair with Bukayo Saka and spearhead a side that wants to dominate English football for years. Arsenal should have the financial capability to pursue the striker, but their priority could be a left winger and adding Álvarez would force squad reconstruction given three centre forwards currently on the books for 2026–27. Gabriel Jesus’s time at the club is likely coming to an end, and Havertz would most likely have to be moved to make space.

Barcelona present an arguably ideal sporting fit. Longstanding interest has cast them as front-runners, viewing Álvarez as a natural heir to the departing Robert Lewandowski. In a team built around technical players he would combine with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha to form a potentially devastating attacking trio. Barcelona have made Álvarez their top summer priority and the player could be enticed by joining the reigning, back-to-back Spanish champions and the chance to lead them to Champions League success, but Atlético’s likely hefty price tag and Barcelona’s financial constraints could block a move.

Paris Saint-Germain would be a luxury signing. The club can afford a deal and Álvarez could flourish in Luis Enrique’s free-flowing system, especially with Gonçalo Ramos expected to leave. Still, Ligue 1 is a less demanding league than the Premier League or La Liga and PSG’s crowded forward line means starting guarantees are not assured.

Purely sporting-wise Barcelona appears the best destination. If they cannot fund the transfer, Arsenal would be the second-best option and PSG would round out the trio of possibilities.

Simeone Says Álvarez Holds the Decision on His Atlético Future

Simeone refused to rule out Álvarez leaving Atlético, saying the decision is for the player in 2026

Published

Diego Simeone declined to categorically rule out a departure for Julián Álvarez after Atlético Madrid’s disappointing end to the 2025–26 season, instead placing the onus on the player. Álvarez arrived from Manchester City in 2024 for approximately $110.6 million (€95 million) as Atlético sought a new offensive focal point following Antoine Griezmann’s decline in influence.

A treble winner with Manchester City who left in search of a leading role away from Erling Haaland’s shadow, Álvarez has been an effective signing in Madrid. Across two seasons with the club he has been a clear attacking asset, yet collective targets have been missed. Atlético were beaten 5–1 by Villarreal on the final day, lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad on penalties and exited the Champions League in the semifinals. They will return to the Champions League after a comfortable fourth-place finish in La Liga, but Álvarez’s presence for 2026–27 is uncertain.

When asked after the Villarreal defeat, Simeone gave an answer that suggested the player’s intentions matter most. “That’s not a question for me, it’s a question for Julián,” Simeone told reporters, as quoted by SPORT .

“He’s old enough to know what he’s going to do, and I imagine he’s probably already made up his mind,” he concluded.

Spanish media are beginning to believe Álvarez may not wear Atlético’s red and white at the start of 2026–27. If he leaves, his record at the club would stand at 49 goals in 106 appearances, including 10 in this season’s Champions League. The forward has attracted interest from both the Spanish and English champions, and Barcelona are heavily linked as they look for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Any transfer is expected to be costly, with prices likely to exceed $115 million.

For Atlético, the question now is whether they can retain a player who has delivered individually while the team has fallen short of key objectives. Simeone’s response positions Álvarez as the main actor in whatever comes next.
