Antonio Valencia links up with Wythenshawe Vets amid star-studded over-35s squad
Antonio Valencia has joined Wythenshawe Vets, a veteran side currently leading Cheshire Vets League .
Antonio Valencia has joined Wythenshawe Vets, adding another high-profile name to a squad built around former top-flight experience. The veteran side competes in the Cheshire Vets League Premier Division, a competition for players over 35, and were top of the table on arrival after winning each of their first seven games with a goal difference of +54.
Wythenshawe welcomed Valencia as a contributor to the club environment. “As a community club with over 80 teams across men’s, women’s and junior football, it’s always great for our players, volunteers and fans to see a player who has competed at the very top level spending time around the club and being part of the environment we’re continuing to build,” Wythenshawe told BBC Sport .
Valencia, a winger-turned-defender, made 325 Premier League appearances during spells with United and Wigan Athletic. He joins a dressing room that includes a number of players with even greater top-flight experience. Emile Heskey leads the appearance list with 516 Premier League outings, 110 goals and 62 caps for England.
Also on the books are Marc Albrighton with 310 appearances and Joleon Lescott with 288. Stephen Ireland (245) and Erik Pieters (225) contribute further midfield and defensive experience. Former Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa (214) is part of the squad alongside forwards Papiss Cissé (117) and Oumar Niasse (65).
Other contributors include Cameron Jerome (211), Nedum Onuoha (188), Danny Drinkwater (104), George Boyd (101), Paul McShane (98), Jefferson Montero (66) and Michael Mancienne (50). The collection of former professionals has helped drive the team’s dominant start and explains the depth of experience visible on Wythenshawe’s official squad list.
For Wythenshawe Vets, the mix of veteran pros and community football appears to be producing results on the pitch and increased interest off it. Valencia’s arrival reinforces the club’s reputation for attracting recognizable names and for assembling a team capable of sustaining an exceptional opening run in the Cheshire Vets League Premier Division.
Chelsea
Where Jarrod Bowen Might Land After West Ham’s Drop: Three Plausible Fits
West Ham relegated, Jarrod Bowen remains the club’s most valuable asset and a likely summer target..
West Ham’s relegation has forced an urgent summer of choices. Traveling supporters will face novel away days and the absence of VAR next season, but the larger consequence is the club’s reduced leverage over its top players. While Bowen has insisted he’ll remain loyal despite their plight, he may not have a choice.
Tottenham Hotspur are an obvious talking point. West Ham ended their unofficial transfer embargo with Tottenham Hotspur last summer when the clubs completed a deal for Mohammed Kudus, so there is a recent precedent. Spurs need greater quality and depth in forward areas, but selling Bowen to the East End’s bitterest top-flight foes would be incendiary. Few were thrilled by the Kudus deal and moving West Ham’s crown jewel to Tottenham would “surely spark acrimony.” For those reasons, Spurs look an unlikely destination this summer.
Chelsea present a plausible tactical fit. A pivotal summer awaits the club after a season that ended with a 2–1 defeat at Sunderland and the absence of European soccer. New manager Xabi Alonso could use superior quality out wide whether he operates a back three or a back four. Chelsea must streamline their squad and trim a mediocre group of wide players. Estêvão’s hamstring injury is a concern at a key stage of his development. Bowen is the experienced head Alonso supposedly wants, plus he spent the past two seasons as West Ham’s captain. His work ethic out of possession, pace on the counterattack and finishing would address several Chelsea priorities, even if other options appear more likely at this stage.
Manchester United also warrant consideration. United spent more than $270 million (£200 million) to reinvent their attack last summer and will prioritise other positions as they prepare for a return to the Champions League. Michael Carrick’s back-to-basics approach delivered the highest points-per-game of any Premier League manager this season and earned him a two-year contract. Amad Diallo has recorded just one goal contribution at club level in 2026, and with Bryan Mbeumo offering more as a fluid centre forward, United could look to upgrade down the right and exploit West Ham’s weakened negotiating position.

Bruno Fernandes: Contract Year Presents Clear Questions for Manchester United
Carrick says Fernandes is likely to stay as contract talks begin; wage and value questions persist .
Michael Carrick is clear about his immediate priorities with Bruno Fernandes as the midfielder approaches the final year of his Manchester United contract. The manager expects continuity and has signalled the club’s desire to keep a player who has become central to the dressing room.
Carrick was blunt when asked whether Fernandes would still be at the club for the start of the 2026–27 season. “I’ve got no reason to think otherwise.
“We’ve loved what he’s done, and he loves being here. I think you can see that. He’s such an influence for us. He’s been the captain and led by example in different ways. He wants to stay on every single game because he’s enjoying his football, which is fantastic.”
Fernandes will turn 32 in September and has voiced his awareness of how age is viewed in English football. “In England,” he fretted earlier this season, “when a player starts to approach 30, they start to think they need to remodel. It’s like the furniture.” That reality shapes the negotiating backdrop ahead of planned talks.
Talks over a new deal are expected to occur over the coming weeks, BBC Sport report. Manchester United are thought to have the option of unilaterally extending Fernandes’s existing contract for an extra year but, heading towards the World Cup, United’s best player is set to be a free agent by the end of next season.
With the exit of Casemiro, Fernandes stands alone as the club’s top earner. His salary was inflated to somewhere in the region of $470,000 per week following the club’s return to Champions League competition. That places him among the Premier League’s best paid players, and any further increase would represent a major financial commitment.
The relevant question for United is not whether Fernandes merits an extension; that is evident. The issue is whether the club can be confident “Will Fernandes be worth the millions he earns by the end of whatever new deal he is offered?” The article notes similar dilemmas elsewhere, where big short-term deals have carried long-term risk.

How the Premier League Final Day Determined European Places
Final day confirmed five Champions League places and Europa League spots for Bournemouth and Sunderland
The final day of the Premier League delivered decisive outcomes for European qualification after a season of shifting permutations. Arsenal were crowned champions on Tuesday evening after Manchester City failed to win at Bournemouth, and the Gunners also head into next weekend’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain with the possibility of entering next season’s competition as holders.
Aston Villa, Europa League winners, beat Manchester City 2–1 and secured fourth place. That result, combined with earlier developments, left the top five comprised of Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Aston Villa and Liverpool as the Premier League’s Champions League representatives for next season.
Liverpool’s route to Europe hinged on midweek events. Erling Haaland’s equaliser at the Vitality Stadium meant Liverpool needed a point at home to Brentford. Curtis Jones opened the scoring before Kevin Schade cancelled it out, and the draw was enough for Liverpool to finish fifth and take the extra Champions League berth awarded after a strong English showing in continental competitions.
Manchester United had already confirmed their place among Europe’s elite by beating Liverpool 3–2 earlier in the month. United went into the final day locked in third and ended the season with a 3–0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion; Bruno Fernandes broke the single-season assist record.
Bournemouth will compete in the Europa League after holding Nottingham Forest to a 1–1 draw and completing an 18-game unbeaten run. Sunderland produced the biggest surprise, rising from 10th on the morning of the final day to secure Europa League qualification with a 2–1 win over Chelsea.
Régis Le Bris has done a remarkable job, and surely the rumors of a potential successor being lined up will be squashed after what his team achieved on the final day.
Crystal Palace can still reach the Europa League by winning the Conference League final. There have been nine English finalists in UEFA’s three club competitions since 2021, with Palace aiming to become the second Premier League outfit to win the Conference League.
Brighton were beaten 3–0 by Manchester United but finished eighth after other results, while their European experience under Roberto De Zerbi in 2023 remains part of the club’s recent continental history.
