Keane singles out Dalot after United defeat to Aston Villa
Roy Keane accused Diogo Dalot of failing to protect team-mates after Manchester United lost to Villa
Roy Keane launched a sharp critique of Diogo Dalot after Manchester United’s defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday. Keane placed responsibility on the Portuguese right back for key moments that led to both of Villa’s goals and said Dalot had not done enough for the team.
An England international collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and bent into the corner to put Villa ahead once more, with United unable to fashion another equaliser as they slipped to their sixth defeat of the season in all competitions. United performed well in periods during the match in the Midlands, but Keane was critical of their work out of possession.
Keane argued Dalot could have done more to protect Leny Yoro when Rogers opened the scoring and said the right back allowed Youri Tielemans to cross in the build-up to the attacker’s second of the afternoon. He described the defensive showing as symptomatic of a wider motivation problem within the side.
Keane did not soften his language on Sky Sports when addressing what he saw as an individual failing inside a team issue. “You can have all the talent in the world,” Keane began his rant on Sky Sports. “We’ve mentioned it time and time again but you’ve got to roll your sleeves up and when the game gets a bit tight there’s moments where you go, ‘I’m just going to do my bit for the team.’ There’s too many players, like Dalot, that just don’t do enough.
“I won’t use the word ‘cheating’ but they’re just not doing enough. And after the game I’d be looking at him—I wouldn’t be looking at other bits of the game.” Keane’s comments leave a clear suggestion that attention should fall on individual accountability for United’s defensive lapses in the match.

Amorim confirms Bruno Fernandes faces time out after soft-tissue injury at Villa
Amorim: Fernandes has a soft tissue injury and will miss some games after the defeat to Villa. more.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said Bruno Fernandes will be sidelined for “a while” after suffering a soft-tissue injury in the defeat to Aston Villa.
Fernandes left the pitch injured and later took his place on the bench to watch Morgan Rogers complete a two-goal haul which handed a frustrating defeat to the Red Devils. After the final whistle Amorim offered an uncertain update on the midfielder’s condition.
“I think it’s soft tissue,” Amorim told Sky Sports after the final whistle. “So, it’s going to take a while. We’ll see.”
In his post-match press conference the United boss added: “I think it is a soft tissue [injury], but I don’t know at this stage [how long Fernandes will miss]. I think he will miss some games but, for the moment, that is it.
“I don’t really want to talk about these matters, because we cannot control them. He is someone who is usually fit and, when he isn’t, usually recovers well.”
While Fernandes occupied the bench he was targeted by taunts from a number of Aston Villa fans seated nearby. The Portugal international responded directly to those jeering him, refusing to let the moment pass without comment.
“You sing more for me than your team,” said Fernandes in footage captured from behind the bench. “You like me.
“Don’t be angry because I always score against you.”
Fernandes’ absence will add to Amorim’s selection problems. Casemiro was suspended for the match and Kobbie Mainoo was ruled out through injury, forcing United to introduce academy players from the bench. Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey were given minutes as Amorim searched for midfield options during a difficult afternoon for the team.

Why Casemiro Will Miss United’s Trip to Villa and the Options in Midfield
Casemiro is suspended for United’s trip to Villa after a fifth booking; Ugarte or Mainoo may step in
Manchester United head to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon without Casemiro, a significant absence for a player who has been central to United’s structure this season. Villa have already beaten Arsenal and Manchester City at home, so the challenge facing Ruben Amorim’s side is intensified by the Brazilian midfielder’s unavailability.
Casemiro, the 33-year-old, will not make the journey to Villa Park because he is serving a one-match suspension after accumulating five yellow cards in the Premier League. His latest booking was shown in the 4–4 draw with Bournemouth last Monday. This will be only the second match he has missed for United this season; he was also absent for the 3–1 defeat at Brentford in September following a red card picked up against Chelsea.
Casemiro has started all but three games this season, and those matches without him have produced defeats for Amorim’s side. The sequence includes the shock second-round humiliation at Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup and top-flight losses at Manchester City and Brentford. United will be desperate to avoid a fourth successive away loss when playing without him.
When Amorim has omitted Casemiro this season Manuel Ugarte has been the replacement used. The Uruguayan has not impressed in his rare opportunities, and question marks remain over his long-term future at Old Trafford. With Villa’s midfield featuring Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara, the manager must make the right call. Kobbie Mainoo is presented in the squad as the only other viable alternative to Casemiro and Ugarte.
Selection in central midfield will be pivotal to how United approach a stern away test against a Villa side proven to be dangerous at home. The absence of Casemiro forces tactical choices that could shape the immediate course of United’s campaign.
