Bruno Fernandes has revealed that a private conversation with his wife played a decisive role in his choice to stay at Manchester United last summer. Faced with significant offers from Saudi clubs, the United captain reflected on priorities with his family and concluded that he still had more to offer the club.

“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club,” Fernandes told The Wayne Rooney Show .

He described the financial temptation succinctly and praised his wife’s pragmatic view. “Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money … there was a lot. The good thing I have in my family is that my wife is pretty down to earth like me.

“We’re very aware that we don’t want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids and trying to be as successful as possible.

“The words of my wife were like, ‘have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?’

“And that small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me.”

Fernandes added: “I didn’t want to leave the club at the point where we were struggling.” Earlier this season, while United were toiling under Ruben Amorim, there was widespread speculation the club might cash in on its marquee player to fund a rebuild. Fernandes has long expressed a desire to remain, though he has accepted he would leave if the club asked him to.

A change of fortunes under Michael Carrick has seen United rise to third in the Premier League table and the sense that the club is no longer in freefall has strengthened. Fernandes made clear his ambitions remain high: “I want to win the Premier League,” he said. “I want to win the Champions League. I never hide from that.”

Still, the long-term outcome will depend on United’s transfer strategy and whether selling Fernandes becomes the most attractive means to finance the squad’s reconstruction.

Manchester United have been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni as one of several candidates to succeed Casemiro this summer. The Telegraph reports the France international could “feature prominently” on United’s shortlist thanks to his size and trophy experience at Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old remains under contract until 2028 and will not come cheap. Real Madrid signed him from Monaco four years ago for a fee in the region of $84 million (€80 million). Across roughly 190 appearances for the club he has collected La Liga and Champions League honours, a record that increases his market value in an inflated transfer market.

The Telegraph also stress that any exit for Tchouaméni would have to be balanced by a fresh recruit for Real Madrid. Midfield has been a recognised area of transition since the trio which oversaw three consecutive Champions League titles—Casemiro himself along with Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić—was broken up. Tchouaméni was acquired to help bridge one generational midfield to another while the likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde continue to develop.

Even if Madrid were willing to sanction a sale, United face domestic competition and internal debate over priorities. As outlined by The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Forest’s Elliot Anderson remains Manchester United’s “top target” in midfield. Anderson is a noted all-rounder and leads Premier League midfielders this season in categories as distinct as passes and duels won.

Crystal Palace’s deep-lying playmaker Adam Wharton is another reported option. Wharton ranks fourth across the division for through balls this season with 20; by comparison Tchouaméni has completed six. With Manchester City’s possible involvement in the market should Rodri move to Madrid, the coming window looks set to revolve around a midfield merry-go-round in which United must weigh defensive solidity against creative versatility.

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has provided an update on contract matters at Old Trafford, saying Kobbie Mainoo is close to agreeing fresh terms while the club still needs to resolve a handful of expiring deals.

On Mainoo, whose current contract runs until 2027, Carrick said: “We’d like to think so, and it’s getting closer, so we’re positive with that.

“We’re calm with it, but we’re positive with it, and time will tell how it goes. But at the moment, we are in a good place.” United therefore have no immediate rush over Mainoo, but attention must turn to other players whose contracts end this summer.

Casemiro’s exit has already been confirmed. Decisions remain outstanding on goalkeeper Tom Heaton, left back Tyrell Malacia and on-loan winger Jadon Sancho. Sancho’s deal is the only one of the three that includes a 12-month extension option.

Carrick was clear there is work to do: “I think coming to the summer, there’s contracts, and there’s all sorts of things that need to be sorted out, but at this stage, to that stage, it’s not been sorted out just yet,”

“I think we’ll cross that bridge a little bit further down the line, but it’s great to have Harry sorted and clarity in that situation. Casemiro was a little bit before me really, so I wasn’t particularly involved in that, but I think as time goes, everything ends up getting sorted out.

“We’re just not at that stage where anything else is sorted just yet.”

Heaton, who turns 40 later this week, has been a popular third-choice keeper since returning in 2021. He has played just three times since that return and has not featured since February 2023. A one-year extension could be on the cards for the veteran.

Malacia arrived for around $17 million (£15 million) in 2022 and provided reliable service in his debut year before a serious knee injury. Since the summer of 2023 he has logged just 323 minutes and a mixed loan spell with PSV Eindhoven did not reverse his downward trajectory. Offering him an extension would be an attempt to protect asset value, but the list of suitors is limited and keeping him could cost more than a sale would recover.

The dilemma is more acute with Sancho, who cost $90 million (£73 million). Accepting a significant loss on him would be damaging for United, and that is compounded by reports of wages as high as $400,000 (£300,000) per week.
