United’s dressing room becomes central issue as manager search continues

United’s manager search is being shaped by concerns over a dressing room described as “out of control”.

Manchester United’s search for a new manager is being shaped by more than just results. As the club considers its next move over Michael Carrick, reports suggest several candidates are uneasy about the atmosphere inside the dressing room.

The Telegraph states that a number of managers being considered by United have serious reservations about the level of toxicity around the squad. That concern has grown after recent criticism from Lisandro Martínez aimed at technical director Jason Wilcox, while Bruno Fernandes also offered a bleak assessment of Carrick’s tactics.

For some of the contenders, restoring control in the dressing room is viewed as a basic requirement. The squad has been described as “out of control” and populated by players who “talk too much.” From that perspective, there appear to be only two routes forward: appointing a strong authority figure able to impose standards, or moving on the players seen as part of the problem. Neither guarantees success.

This is not a new issue for United. The challenge of managing noise around the dressing room has followed several managers. In 2022, Ralf Rangnick, then interim boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s dismissal, said the club needed “open heart surgery.” He added that it required “strong leadership,” players with the right attitude and a clear plan from the board.

Erik ten Hag arrived that summer and quickly clashed with Cristiano Ronaldo, later saying the Portugal international’s poor work rate was harming the team. A short improvement in form did not last, and Ruben Amorim was then handed the task in 2024.

Although results under Amorim were poor, he did make efforts to steady the dressing room. He challenged the training performances of both Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho and spoke openly about the long-term nature of his project, before the team’s performances led to his dismissal in early 2026.

Conte moves to shut down talk of advanced talks amid Manchester United speculation

Conte has denied advanced talks with any club as Manchester United speculation continues to grow.

Antonio Conte has moved to cool speculation over an immediate return to management, insisting he is not in advanced negotiations with any club despite renewed talk linking him with a move to Manchester United.

The 57-year-old has been out of work since leaving Napoli by mutual consent at the end of last season, having guided them to the Serie A title in 2024-25. His availability has naturally attracted attention, but Conte used a statement on Friday to set out his position clearly.

He wrote that there are “currently no negotiations at an advanced stage.” Conte also said he intends to “take the time to consider how and when to return to management,” adding that any comeback will only happen when the “conditions are right.”

He went on to reject reports about his supposed financial terms and demands for control. Conte said: “I have read reports of financial demands and requests for full control that I have supposedly already made to the clubs mentioned, as well as reservations about what has been described as my ‘strong personality.’ These reports are unfounded.

“Should a concrete opportunity arise, that will be the time to hold discussions with the club concerned and jointly consider the terms of a potential agreement, with due regard for both parties’ needs and the qualities and approach that define my work as a manager.”

Conte added that any “assumptions” about his “demands and professional future” are exactly that for now and “cannot be treated as fact.”

The broader conversation around him is unlikely to stop there. Manchester United have been warned that Conte can deliver results, but that his methods can be demanding. He is also seen as more of a short-term solution than a long-range planner, usually spending no more than two full seasons at a club. Juventus remains the lone exception over the past 20 years.

His last spell in the Premier League, at Tottenham Hotspur between Nov. 2, 2021 and March 26, 2023, ended in turmoil after he labelled his own players “selfish” following a poor result against Southampton, then bottom of the table. “We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players. I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart [into it],” he said at the time.

Fernandes Captaincy in Doubt as Carrick Refuses to Commit

Carrick leaves Fernandes’s captaincy uncertain, with Bournemouth next and United’s leadership options thin.

Published

Manchester United’s captaincy picture has become unclear after Michael Carrick declined to rule out removing Bruno Fernandes from the role in the wake of his public criticism. Carrick also insisted the squad is not split, but his response left the door open to change.

Martínez is understood to have been fined for his comments, although Sky Sports News state that no such punishment is planned for Fernandes. That remained the position until Carrick’s guarded remarks in Friday’s press conference.

When asked directly whether Fernandes could be dropped or relieved of the armband, Carrick said: “The most important thing for me is the team and the dynamics in the squad. It is about the football club.

“Whatever the situation is I will always do what is best for the football club.”

Attention now turns to Sunday’s match with Bournemouth, where United are trying to end a sequence of seven games without a win. Carrick’s starting line-up may offer the first clue as to how he sees the issue.

The club’s leadership options remain limited, which has long fed concerns about the makeup of the dressing room. If Fernandes is relieved of the responsibility, Harry Maguire would be the likeliest replacement. Maguire was appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær in 2020 before Erik ten Hag removed the role three years later and handed it to Fernandes.

Other possibilities appear less straightforward. Luke Shaw could be considered when fit, while Lisandro Martínez might also have been in the conversation had he not been the first to speak out against the club. Youri Tielemans arrived in the summer with experience of wearing the armband at Aston Villa, and Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Tom Heaton were all part of a leadership group under Ruben Amorim.

The debate has already drawn a strong reaction from Wayne Rooney, who was concerned that Fernandes was not even the first United player to speak out. His sharp assessment of the pair included accusations of selfishness and doubts over their commitment to the club.

Rooney Criticises Martínez and Fernandes After Public United Comments

Rooney slams Martínez and Fernandes, accusing both of deflecting blame and avoiding responsibility.

Wayne Rooney has launched a sharp attack on Manchester United pair Lisandro Martínez and Bruno Fernandes after their recent criticism of the club, describing their conduct as damaging and accusing them of shifting responsibility on to others.

The former United striker said the situation has only added to the pressure around Carrick, and he argued that the latest comments from inside the squad have exposed a deeper problem at Old Trafford.

“When Martínez came out, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart, and that was the start,” he told The United Stand . “We’ve seen it now with Bruno and you’re going to see it with more players. The reason why is because them players, they don’t want to take responsibility.

“You can say whether Bruno was right or wrong in what he said, but you have to take responsibility on the pitch, you have to take responsibility as a group of players and never mind who your manager was. There were times when me and Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t talk, but I’d run through a brick wall for him on the pitch because I want to play for myself, I want to play for the club, I want to play for the fans.

“These players, they’re selfish. They care about themselves, they don’t care about their teammates, don’t care about the manager, about the staff or the fans, they care about themselves.

“If they’re not getting what’s right for them … they’re like babies and just throwing their toys out of the pram and go and try and deflect the blame on to anyone else but themselves. They have to look at themselves. If they’ve looked at themselves, if they’re honest with themselves, then start looking at other people.”

Rooney also said the squad has enough ability to do better, but insisted the players must prove it on the pitch rather than speak publicly.

“Martínez, for instance, as much as the fans will agree and say, ‘oh yeah, this is brilliant, he’s coming out and speaking against the club,’ he’s doing it to take heat off himself,” Rooney continued.

“Bruno, he’s having probably the worst run of form he’s had since he’s been at the club and again, it’s no coincidence, he’s putting pressure on someone else because he doesn’t want to face it. He doesn’t want to deal with it himself.

“If he looks at himself in the mirror, if Martínez looks himself in the mirror, all the players … they’ll find what is looking back at them is them and it’s not good enough. They need to show more. ]
