Crisis at Chelsea: Enzo Maresca Poised to Exit After Breakdown with Club Hierarchy

Emergency talks are expected to end with Enzo Maresca’s departure amid a breakdown at Chelsea. club.

Chelsea face a sudden managerial crossroads after multiple reports indicated Enzo Maresca could leave the club within hours. The Telegraph first raised the possibility before a succession of reports outlined the depth of the situation.

According to The Guardian, emergency talks are scheduled for Thursday to seek a resolution that is “highly likely to end in a departure for Maresca.” The Italian is said to be eager to leave, but formal discussions must address the legal position; Maresca remains under contract until 2029.

Those close to the situation expect Maresca not to be in charge for Sunday’s meeting with Manchester City. On-field form has declined in recent weeks, but reporting suggests decisions off the pitch are the decisive factor.

Accounts point to a complete breakdown in the relationship between Maresca and those “calling the shots” at Stamford Bridge, specifically co-owner Behdad Eghbali and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. The structure of Chelsea’s hierarchy has been a source of debate since BlueCo’s arrival in 2022. Eghbali, Winstanley and Stewart have taken prominent roles in recruitment and overall strategy, leaving the first-team manager to implement their plans on the pitch.

That arrangement was made clear to Maresca when he was appointed, yet reports indicate the Italian is no longer willing to accept it. Frustration over limited involvement in transfer dealings has been highlighted: Maresca’s public call for a centre back in the summer was ignored, and it was initially reported he grew frustrated by repeated questions about his tactics in early December.

The rapid change in fortunes is stark. A month ago Chelsea beat Barcelona 3–0 and were hailed as potential title contenders after a 1–1 draw with Arsenal. They are now 15 points off the top spot and described as being on the cusp of a crisis.

The coming days will determine whether emergency talks lead to a swift managerial change or a negotiated settlement to Maresca’s contract.

Martinez Set for Several Weeks Out as Chelsea Turn to Penders

Chelsea will rely on Mike Penders after Emiliano Martínez’s emergency surgery and concussion.

Chelsea have been handed a clear setback after Emiliano Martínez required emergency surgery on a fractured jaw suffered against Everton last weekend. Xabi Alonso stopped short of offering a firm comeback date, saying the goalkeeper should be back in “a few weeks.”

Martínez also posted from the hospital after the operation and gave the same broad assessment of his recovery, saying he would be “back in a few weeks.” Alonso confirmed that the injury was not limited to the jaw issue, adding that Martínez suffered a concussion. Under English Football Association rules, that means he is ruled out for at least 14 days.

Speaking on the eve of Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur, Alonso said the goalkeeper was progressing well but still needed time.

“He’s doing better,” Alonso said. “He had the surgery, and day by day, he’s feeling better, but we still need to wait.”

“Few weeks, few weeks,” he repeated about Martínez’s projected return. “Hopefully less than more, but we need to wait. The good thing is that he’s feeling better and that he wants to listen to his feelings, the opinion of the doctors, the specialists, the surgeons. Considering it was a bad one, he’s doing good.”

With Martínez unavailable, 21-year-old Mike Penders is set to take over for Chelsea in the coming matches. The Belgian made his first Premier League appearance when he replaced Martínez late against Everton, producing one save as Chelsea recorded their first clean sheet of the league season.

Penders began the campaign as Robert Sánchez’s deputy and remained second choice after Martínez arrived and Sánchez moved on to Como. Chelsea have long viewed him as a major talent after signing him as a teenager in the summer of 2024, and Alonso believes he is ready for the step up.

“He’s ready,” Alonso stated. “He’s been training well, he’s played a couple of cup games where he showed that he has a good level, even the day when he came on against Everton, in a few minutes he showed his personality, his qualities. That’s why we have a squad to be ready for these kinds of situations, and we are fully convinced that Mike can play very well.”

Alonso also said Penders is a goalkeeper for both the present and the future, and noted the support he has received by working alongside Martínez. The comparison to Thibaut Courtois has also been made before, with Alonso again underlining the similarities in size, style and left-footedness.

Premier League Gameweek 8 calls: Chelsea host Spurs as Liverpool face Brighton

Chelsea host Spurs as Liverpool meet Brighton in a weekend of tight Premier League predictions.

The Premier League returns after another midweek round of continental action involving nine English clubs, and Gameweek 8 arrives with little room for recovery. Several of the league’s biggest sides are back in action quickly, while a number of awkward fixtures could shape the standings before the weekend is over.

Friday’s opener at Portman Road looks finely balanced. Ipswich Town have collected nine points from seven matches and have taken two-thirds of that tally at home, with wins over Sunderland and Fulham lifting them to 10th. Nottingham Forest, however, arrive with their own issues, and goals have been difficult to come by for the Tricky Trees. A draw feels the likeliest outcome.

Aston Villa’s meeting with Man City is one of the standout fixtures on Saturday. Villa have won five of their last six, while City have maintained a perfect Premier League run, though their domestic record remains surrounded by uncertainty off the pitch. Even so, their form under Pep Guardiola has been efficient, and with Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden in encouraging touch, they are tipped to edge it.

Arsenal are expected to keep pace at the top with a home win over Everton. The Gunners remain defensively solid, even if their attack will be without Bukayo Saka, while Everton are likely to sit deep and counter through Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish.

Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur closes Saturday and the home side look strong favourites. Spurs have won only once at Stamford Bridge in 25 years, while Chelsea have scored 17 goals in seven matches under Xabi Alonso. João Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have all been in form.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s meeting with Brighton has the feel of a high-scoring draw, Man Utd are predicted to share the points with Bournemouth, and Sunderland’s test against Leeds United could be decided by fatigue after their trip to Poland.

Ashley Young warns Manchester United against Antonio Conte move

Ashley Young has cautioned against a Conte appointment, calling it a “disaster” for Manchester United.

Published

Former Manchester United captain Ashley Young has urged caution over any attempt to bring in Antonio Conte as a replacement for Michael Carrick, branding such a move a “disaster.”

Conte is available after leaving Napoli by mutual consent in May, and his trophy record is as strong as any. The Italian won five Serie A championships as a player with Juventus, then added five more as a manager with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli, while also guiding Chelsea to the Premier League title.

Young, who spent just shy of nine years at Old Trafford before 18 months working under Conte at Inter, believes the fit would be wrong for Manchester United at this point. His view comes as pressure continues to build around Carrick, even if the hierarchy are still thought to support him.

Wednesday night’s defeat to Como was another heavy blow. It was Manchester United’s second-worst loss in the Champions League era and extended a winless run to seven matches, a sequence that sits awkwardly alongside the strong finish Carrick produced in his interim spell last season. On that run, the team collected more points from their final 17 games than champions Arsenal.

After the final whistle in northern Italy, Carrick walked straight to the corner of the stadium where the travelling supporters were gathered and apologised for what had taken place. He then turned his attention to the players and did not spare them, saying: “If you don’t run and you don’t run forward and you don’t run back, you ain’t going to win.”

Young’s doubts about Conte are rooted in the demands of his methods. Speaking on The Overlap Daily show, he said: “He is crazy,” and then described the intensity that often comes with the Italian’s approach.

“[Conte] is a bit like Diego Simeone on the sidelines. You hear him non-stop,” Young said. “Training is intense, there’s a lot of running. There was a lot that he did. The training sessions were a lot of 11 vs. 11, at times a little bit boring.

“Meetings were long. If we lost a game, we could go into a meeting and stop literally everything [else]. You could be in there three or four hours. I think that’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t last long at places because, not just the players, the board he tries to test mentally. I think people get annoyed at him and they’re like, no it’s time for you to go.”
