Liverpool and Arsenal serve up a chaotic contest with fine margins everywhere
Liverpool and Arsenal produced a fierce, high-tempo contest, with Rice and VAR at the centre.
“Today has to be the day,” Mikel Arteta said before kickoff, and the match that followed justified the tension in his voice. What unfolded was nothing like the cautious 1-0 contest these sides produced a year earlier. Liverpool, shaped by Andoni Iraola’s arrival over the summer, imposed a far more frantic rhythm on Arsenal and dragged the visitors into a game that never really settled.
Arteta’s team still found a way to win 1-0, a result that brought benefits for both sides while giving the neutral a wildly entertaining afternoon. The contrast in styles was clear from the start. Liverpool played with speed and verticality, in and out of possession, an approach Iraola had previously developed elsewhere and has now carried into Merseyside. Arteta had warned before the trip: “This is a team that is very vertical, they have the capacity to generate chaos from almost every situation.”
Arsenal initially handled that pressure well. They controlled the opening quarter-hour, took a deserved lead and did not allow Liverpool a shot or a touch in their box during that spell. Even so, the hosts finished the first half with 28 touches in the Arsenal penalty area, a Premier League record for a first half against the Gunners.
The visitors were forced to defend with real desperation, though this was a contest they had prepared for. “I expect big chaos in the game,” Gabriel said before the match. “We are ready.” Arteta’s side ended with a physically imposing lineup, and Declan Rice summed up the feeling afterward: “That togetherness we have is undefeated.”
Rice was central to the breakthrough too, driving beyond Noni Madueke’s right shoulder before delivering the ball across for the opening goal. His attacking influence has grown sharply this season, with five Premier League assists already, all from open play.
Liverpool, despite drawing a blank on target, still created enough to feel frustrated. They posted 17 shots and 1.15 expected goals, with several efforts flashing wide from promising positions. Their case was not helped by referee Andy Madley, who missed a clear tug on Alexander Isak in the box, prompting Jamie Carragher to say: “One of the best goalscorers in the league is pulled back seven yards out and it stops him heading the ball-why does he need to make a meal of it? VAR do your job.”
There was more late drama when Alexis Mac Allister and Martín Ødegaard became involved in a brief flashpoint, while Madueke escaped a second caution. Liverpool also had to turn to Trey Nyoni, who was making the first Premier League start of his career after Szoboszlai was left out as a precaution.

Gameweek 9 verdicts: Chelsea edge United, Arsenal stun Liverpool
A full set of Gameweek 9 predictions, including Chelsea vs Man Utd and Liverpool vs Arsenal.
Gameweek 9 brings a stacked Premier League schedule, with several meetings that carry clear weight in the early-season picture. The most eye-catching fixtures are Chelsea against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool’s home clash with Arsenal, while there are also plenty of tight contests elsewhere across the division.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are tipped to come through 2-1 against a Manchester United side under pressure after back-to-back three-goal defeats to Como and Bournemouth. Michael Carrick remains in charge for the trip to west London after talks with Bruno Fernandes and the rest of the squad, but this feels like a critical test. Chelsea have their own issues, yet home advantage and the absence of João Pedro could still matter in a narrow contest.
Bournemouth’s strong run is expected to continue with a 2-1 win over Leeds United. The Cherries have produced a striking sequence of results across multiple competitions, and with Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson supported by Eli Junior Kroupi’s return, they look well placed to extend that momentum.
Other calls point to draws for Brentford against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United against Everton, while Coventry and Sunderland are forecast to cancel each other out. Hull are backed to edge Ipswich 1-0, and Manchester City are favoured to beat Brighton 3-2 in what could be the weekend’s most open game.
Tottenham are projected to keep improving with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Aston Villa are expected to defeat Fulham 3-0 after their recent uptick in form. The standout result, though, is at Anfield, where Arsenal are predicted to win 2-1 after Liverpool’s recent consistency meets a team looking to respond after a cup setback. The final matchup, Newcastle versus Everton, is also forecast to finish level.

Arteta stands by Dowman response after red card setback
Arteta backs his Dowman warning, saying Arsenal must stay realistic after the teenager’s red card.
Mikel Arteta has defended his reaction to Max Dowman after the teenager was sent off for the first time in his Arsenal career, insisting the moment has to be viewed in context. The manager, who appeared visibly angry as Dowman walked off, said his warning reflected standards set before the match rather than a lack of support for the 16-year-old.
Arteta admitted the optics were open to criticism, but he was clear that his response was tied to the demands of the occasion. “I haven’t seen the reaction to my reaction,” Arteta confessed ahead of Arsenal’s marquee weekend clash with Liverpool. “Whether that’s positive or negative. I understand, but you need to understand the context, the relationship I have with him and what we discussed just before we went out.
“If you see the reaction of my mother and father with me sometimes, you’d say ‘I don’t like that reaction,’ but for me it was the best reaction ever, to be able to be who I am. But you want, obviously, the best and most beautiful one. You want to see the reaction of his teammates when they have to play with 10 men?
“That’s the reaction, that’s the level,” Arteta added. “Whether it’s right or wrong, that’s the reaction. And the reaction when I don’t win, you know what it is? I’m p—-d off, big time. We need to be ready, this is the environment and the reality.
“Otherwise we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League at this level, and we look after him so much, like you cannot imagine. But at the same time, we are going to demand him like anybody else, because he needs to earn the right to play. Otherwise, the rest of the boys, what are they going to tell me? You need to be fair, that’s all.”
The Arsenal boss was also frustrated by the FA’s decision not to overturn the dismissal. “Very disappointed to be fair,” Arteta said. “Especially with the reckless tackles that he received but then his reaction is minimal in relation to the action. And yeah, disappointed it’s not being overturned.
“It is what it is,” the Spaniard boss added. “We have put every argument on the table to make a case for it. Not only the action, obviously, that is so evident when you look it back in slow motion, [but also] the previous action and Max’s action. It’s clear obviously we have a different opinion. And on top of that I think you need to read the context of the player, the age and what happened previously.”
Dowman escaped serious injury after the challenge from Harrison Neal, with Arteta saying “it could’ve been really bad.” He added that the youngster must learn to keep his composure, especially given the way opponents target his style of play, something he has already experienced after being sent off a month ago while on international duty with England U-19’s side.

Ødegaard Bayern claim lands a blow to Arteta’s Arsenal project
Reports say Ødegaard is open to Bayern, a possibility that could unsettle Arteta’s plans.
Martin Ødegaard has emerged in a surprising new transfer story, with reports suggesting the Arsenal captain is open to joining Bayern Munich. The claim adds an awkward twist for Mikel Arteta, especially given the timing and the player’s importance to the club’s current direction.
Previous links between Ødegaard and Bayern have been treated as speculative, but this round of reporting is said to carry “new momentum” after Sky Germany indicated that the midfielder may be willing to move to Bavaria. Arsenal are believed to want to secure fresh terms for the 27-year-old, yet the club is already dealing with Declan Rice’s lucrative renewal.
Bayern, notably, are not said to be pushing aggressively for the move. Instead, the German side are reportedly prepared to wait while Ødegaard’s contract situation remains unresolved. With less than two years left on his current deal, the uncertainty is enough to create concern around one of Arsenal’s most influential figures.
For Arteta, the issue goes beyond one contract. He has repeatedly spoken about building a club that can challenge at the very top, and his ambition has been clear. “It’s certainly the ambition of the club and the owners to be the best club in the world,” Arteta declared ahead of the current campaign. He also said he wants “the best facilities, the best stadium, the best supporters” and “the best players in the world.”
That is why the possibility of losing Ødegaard would cut so deeply. Arsenal’s captain is viewed as a central part of the manager’s project, a trusted lieutenant whose influence is felt across the pitch. Gabriel provides the defensive base, Rice drives the midfield and Bukayo Saka carries the star billing, but Ødegaard remains the player who best reflects Arteta’s ideas.
He is fundamental to Arsenal’s work in possession and without it, and his growing output in front of goal has only strengthened his standing. He is also a key presser, making his value to the team even greater. Any hint that he could leave would challenge the image of a side still moving upward.
