James setback leaves Chelsea managing another spell without their captain
Chelsea must cope without Reece James again after knee surgery and a possible three-month layoff.
Chelsea have been forced back into an all-too-familiar situation after Reece James suffered another injury setback during training.
The right back has been ruled out again after the club confirmed he is dealing with a knee problem. James has since undergone what Chelsea described as “minor” surgery on the knee, meaning another recovery period has begun for the captain.
No formal timetable has been issued by Chelsea, but reports around the setback suggest supporters will not see him for some time. The expectation is that James will spend about three months on the sidelines, which would keep him out until January. That timing may reflect caution as much as the injury itself, with Chelsea expected to move carefully before allowing him back.
A return in mid-January would place his comeback shortly after the midpoint of the Premier League season. Sunderland on Jan. 16 would fit that three-month window, although meetings with Leeds United, Nottingham Forest or Manchester United may offer more realistic targets for his first appearance back.
Chelsea’s planning without James is complicated by the uncertainty around where he is now most likely to play. He is naturally a right back, but under Xabi Alonso he has spent only 22 minutes there, with the manager preferring him in central midfield. Enzo Maresca used him in a similar way last season as the club continued to manage his fitness issues.
That shift looked as if it might become more permanent after Chelsea’s summer business. Marco Palestra arrived from Atalanta as a right back option, while the club placed a heavy price on Malo Gusto. Even so, neither has become a regular starter in that role, with Pedro Neto moving from winger to wingback.
Chelsea have cover at right back, but James’s absence is likely to be felt in midfield. The collapse of Lamine Camara’s Deadline Day move has left Alonso’s squad a little short in that area.

Pedro Neto brace settles Chelsea as Martínez injury casts a shadow
Neto scored twice as Chelsea won at Everton, but Martínez’s head injury overshadowed the result.
Chelsea left Hill Dickinson Stadium with three points after a narrow win over Everton, but the afternoon was defined as much by concern as celebration. Pedro Neto scored twice for the first Premier League brace of his career, yet the sight of Emiliano Martínez leaving on a stretcher after a nasty head injury dominated the closing stages and lingered after the final whistle.
The breakthrough arrived seconds after the restart, when Jorrel Hato burst down the left and delivered a low cross into the area. Neto met it to finish off the move and reward Chelsea for a spell of possession that had hinted at control without truly delivering it.
The second goal came deep into stoppage time, when Neto reacted to a loose ball after a free kick and guided it into the corner to settle the contest. It ensured Chelsea collected back-to-back victories and, importantly, their first clean sheet in nine months.
Even so, this was not a commanding display. Chelsea were still exposed when Everton broke forward, and Thierno Barry might have altered the story had he shown more composure in front of goal. There were encouraging signs in a more balanced performance under Xabi Alonso, though the team remain prone to defensive lapses.
Martínez, who has faced scrutiny since arriving from Aston Villa in the summer, offered a reminder of his value with a couple of solid saves and assured distribution before injury cut short what had been a promising outing. With his condition now the main concern, 21-year-old Mike Penders is set to build on the clean sheet Chelsea have finally managed to secure.
There were also notable individual displays elsewhere. Josh Acheampong led Chelsea’s defensive efforts, Maxence Lacroix recovered well after a shaky previous outing, while Moisés Caicedo and Morgan Rogers added strong work without the ball. Neto, though, was the clear difference-maker on the afternoon.

Chelsea await scan results after Martínez is stretchered off against Everton
Chelsea are waiting on scan results after Emiliano Martínez was stretchered off with a head injury against Everton.
Chelsea are facing an anxious wait over Emiliano Martínez after the goalkeeper was forced off against Everton with a head injury.
The incident prompted immediate concern. Branthwaite was sat up shortly after, but medical staff rushed on to attend to Chelsea’s stopper, who was visibly in distress on the pitch. After a prolonged spell of treatment, Martínez was taken away on a stretcher and went straight to hospital for scans. As he was leaving the field, he appeared to be moving his arms.
Mike Penders replaced him and became the youngest goalkeeper in Chelsea’s Premier League history. The 21-year-old’s introduction is expected to be the first of many over the coming years, with club officials viewing him as a long-term option.
Chelsea will not be able to set any proper return timeline until the formal diagnosis is known, although it would be a major surprise to see Martínez back before the end of the month at the very least. If the injury proves more serious, his absence could easily stretch beyond that.
The club are now waiting on the scan results to understand the full picture. That uncertainty could also affect Xabi Alonso’s plans for a busy run of fixtures. Tottenham Hotspur visit next weekend, followed by a Carabao Cup tie with Liverpool, a game for which Martínez may have been rested anyway. The month then closes with a meeting with Manchester United before Chelsea travel to Sunderland ahead of the November international break.
Any extended lay-off would hand Penders a significant run in the side. The towering 21-year-old impressed while on loan with Strasbourg last season, and Chelsea opted to keep him at the club this year rather than send him out again. He has already started both of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup matches, and after his debut, a 2–0 win over Luton Town in the second round, Alonso said the Belgian will soon have a major role to play.

Premier League Gameweek 7 predictions: Chelsea tested at Everton, Leeds host Manchester United
Gameweek 7 brings Chelsea to Everton, Liverpool to Brentford, and Manchester United to Leeds on a busy weekend.
A fresh round of Premier League action arrives with Gameweek 7 beginning in Merseyside and ending in north London, and there should be no shortage of movement across the weekend’s fixtures.
Chelsea open the slate at Everton after a commanding 5-1 win over Bournemouth, a result Xabi Alonso described as a “complete performance” from his side. Jordan Henderson’s brace, along with goals from João Pedro and Morgan Rogers, has added to the sense that Chelsea are building momentum. Everton, though, have not lost in the league so far and remain difficult to beat at home, even if their recent record in this fixture favours the visitors only narrowly.
Liverpool travel to Brentford after a high-scoring midweek outing against LASK, while Manchester City will look to answer their own recent setback when Ipswich visit. Newcastle, meanwhile, face an Aston Villa side that appears to be settling after a mixed start, and Fulham meet Hull in a game that could be stubborn rather than open.
The south coast brings another notable contest as Bournemouth and Sunderland both come in after Thursday European wins. Brighton also return home after a convincing continental outing, although Crystal Palace’s strong league form means that match may be tighter than the table suggests.
Sunday’s headline fixture takes Leeds against Manchester United. United remain under scrutiny after a difficult start, and Elland Road is not the sort of venue that offers easy relief. Leeds have already shown enough resilience to suggest they can make life awkward again.
At the City Ground, Arsenal face a Nottingham Forest side that has made a habit of frustrating them on home soil. Forest have only one league win so far, but the numbers behind them suggest they are not far off a better return.
Tottenham close the round against Coventry, with the visitors arriving in confident mood after consecutive wins. Spurs are still searching for rhythm, but this looks like a chance to impose control if they can settle quickly.
