How United’s Midfield Could Shape Up With Carlos Baleba
Baleba’s arrival gives United a new midfield balance, with Fernandes, Tielemans and Mainoo all in the discussion.
Manchester United’s midfield picture has changed again after the arrival of Carlos Baleba, with the club now said to have reached an $88.5 million agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion. That follows earlier moves for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Chelsea, decisions that helped offset Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s serious knee injury.
The latest signing gives Michael Carrick a clearer sense of balance in the middle of the pitch. Baleba’s price is notably lower than the $135 million valuation Brighton had previously placed on him, and United have been able to act after his stock fell over the past 12 months.
At the top of the structure, Bruno Fernandes looks set to keep his place as the No. 10. He delivered 13 assists in the 17 league matches Carrick managed last season, taking his overall total to 21 and moving beyond the joint record set by Thierry Henry and matched by Kevin De Bruyne. Despite a quiet World Cup and preseason, Fernandes is expected to remain a regular starter in both the Premier League and Champions League.
The real competition comes in the two deeper midfield positions. Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo were heavily used late last season, but Mainoo now faces a stronger battle for minutes because of United’s new arrivals.
Tielemans offers control, security in possession and creativity, while also carrying the qualities needed to open compact defences. Santos is viewed by some as the more complete player, but Baleba’s mobility could make him the better partner for Tielemans, especially given that the Belgian is not a natural recovery defender.
Baleba also brings ball carrying that Tielemans does not naturally provide. Santos may be the safer option, particularly after Baleba’s disappointing 2025-26 campaign, but if Carrick can restore the destructive level Baleba showed in 2024-25, when he was one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, he may yet force his way into United’s strongest side.
His athleticism makes him valuable in defensive transition and counter-pressing as well. Supporters said he was “free” when Ruben Amorim left Manchester at the start of the year, and Michael Carrick made use of Kobbie Mainoo’s liberation.
The then-interim manager said the Englishman “epitomizes this football club” after he signed a new deal, lasting until 2031, with the Red Devils in April. Mainoo then went to the World Cup, where he did not play a single minute in North America, and his extended break afterwards meant he was absent from preseason too.

Premier League Gameweek 8 calls: Chelsea host Spurs as Liverpool face Brighton
Chelsea host Spurs as Liverpool meet Brighton in a weekend of tight Premier League predictions.
The Premier League returns after another midweek round of continental action involving nine English clubs, and Gameweek 8 arrives with little room for recovery. Several of the league’s biggest sides are back in action quickly, while a number of awkward fixtures could shape the standings before the weekend is over.
Friday’s opener at Portman Road looks finely balanced. Ipswich Town have collected nine points from seven matches and have taken two-thirds of that tally at home, with wins over Sunderland and Fulham lifting them to 10th. Nottingham Forest, however, arrive with their own issues, and goals have been difficult to come by for the Tricky Trees. A draw feels the likeliest outcome.
Aston Villa’s meeting with Man City is one of the standout fixtures on Saturday. Villa have won five of their last six, while City have maintained a perfect Premier League run, though their domestic record remains surrounded by uncertainty off the pitch. Even so, their form under Pep Guardiola has been efficient, and with Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden in encouraging touch, they are tipped to edge it.
Arsenal are expected to keep pace at the top with a home win over Everton. The Gunners remain defensively solid, even if their attack will be without Bukayo Saka, while Everton are likely to sit deep and counter through Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish.
Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur closes Saturday and the home side look strong favourites. Spurs have won only once at Stamford Bridge in 25 years, while Chelsea have scored 17 goals in seven matches under Xabi Alonso. João Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers have all been in form.
Elsewhere, Liverpool’s meeting with Brighton has the feel of a high-scoring draw, Man Utd are predicted to share the points with Bournemouth, and Sunderland’s test against Leeds United could be decided by fatigue after their trip to Poland.

Martínez fitness latest leaves United waiting on Tuesday update
Martínez’s thigh issue leaves United waiting for Tuesday’s update before Como.
Lisandro Martínez’s latest setback has put Manchester United in another holding pattern, with the defender’s condition still uncertain after he was withdrawn at half-time in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road.
The Argentina international started the game but did not come out for the second half, as United adjusted their shape after the interval. Ayden Heaven was already unavailable because of illness, and the team appeared to move to a back three when Martínez was replaced by returning fullback Noussair Mazraoui.
After the match, Michael Carrick said Martínez had “felt his thigh a little bit.” That brief assessment suggested caution rather than alarm, with no immediate indication that the issue was severe. Carrick also offered no further details, leaving the club to wait for a fuller update when he next speaks to reporters on Tuesday.
The timing matters, with United due to face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday. At this stage, it seems difficult to imagine Martínez being pushed into that match so soon after coming off against Leeds. If the problem is minor and carefully managed, he could be back in contention relatively quickly. The more realistic short-term target may be Bournemouth, when the Premier League schedule resumes on Sunday.
Martínez’s injury record since arriving from Ajax in the summer of 2022 remains a significant concern. Across his first four years at the club, he made 110 appearances in all competitions, averaging fewer than 28 a season. Transfermarkt estimates that he has spent a total of 632 days sidelined in that period.
For now, United are waiting for the next update, with the hope that this is another brief interruption rather than something more serious.

Man Utd Earn a Point at Leeds After Mbeumo Opens and Calvert-Lewin Responds
United drew at Elland Road after Mbeumo struck and Calvert-Lewin levelled for Leeds.
Manchester United left Elland Road with a point after a hard-fought meeting with Leeds United on Sunday, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin replied to Bryan Mbuemo’s opener. It was a contest shaped more by discipline and physicality than fluency, with both sides finding chances scarce once the game settled into a narrow rhythm.
Leeds came into the match having lost for the first time this season at Arsenal last weekend, but they pushed United all the way in a contest that demanded resilience. The visitors made a strong first-half case for the lead, with their best moments coming in spells that suggested a side capable of controlling the game if not quite putting it away.
That changed when Leeds gathered momentum after the break. Calvert-Lewin equalised from a messy corner sequence, reinforcing the sense that he remains a major threat at Elland Road. Even with time left to play, neither team appeared especially inclined to force the issue, and the point eventually felt like an acceptable outcome for both.
For United, the encouraging note was the influence of Bryan Mbeumo when used centrally. He had already missed a header from a fine Youri Tielemans delivery before making amends by finishing smartly from another Tielemans cross, opening up his foot to guide the ball beyond James Trafford and into the corner. It was not a flawless display from the scorer, who was slow to react in the sequence leading to Leeds’ goal, but his finish ensured United did not leave empty-handed.
There was plenty to like about the collective effort, particularly in a demanding away setting. Bruno Fernandes, though, cut a frustrated figure for much of the afternoon and was booked in the opening period for a late challenge. The captain has an excellent record in this fixture, but this was a difficult day for him.
United will take the draw and the evidence of a side that competed well enough to earn it, even after surrendering a lead.
