Man Utd Consider Shea Charles as Budget Option if Manuel Ugarte Leaves

Man Utd monitor Shea Charles as a budget midfield target if Manuel Ugarte leaves this summer. option

Manchester United have reportedly kept Southampton midfielder Shea Charles on their radar as a budget-friendly alternative should Manuel Ugarte depart this summer. The Daily Mail says United’s recruitment team is monitoring a wide set of options and could turn to lower-cost targets if a failure to secure Champions League football limits transfer funds.

United remain expected to pursue top-market replacements for Casemiro, with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba among those linked, each valued in the nine-figure bracket. That route remains likely while United hold a strong grip on third place in the domestic table and European qualification is still in sight.

Charles is a local product, born and raised in Manchester after 12 years on the Etihad Campus with Manchester City. He made one first-team appearance for City before departing in 2023 to Southampton, at a time when current United director of football Jason Wilcox was in charge at the Saints. The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international, eligible through his mother, is valued at $26.5 million (£20 million).

Last season Charles did not feature for Southampton in the Premier League despite being part of the promotion campaign; a change of system restricted his opportunities and he spent the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday. He has returned to Southampton as they pursue promotion again. In the FA Cup on Saturday he was a second-half substitute as the Saints knocked Arsenal out, and he scored the late winning goal.

If United formalise interest in Charles they would face competition from Everton and two other unnamed Premier League clubs. Rangers would like to be involved but cannot financially compete with the English clubs.

Ugarte’s Manchester United career has not gone to plan. He emerged at Sporting CP as a lynchpin of Ruben Amorim’s successful team, moved to Paris Saint-Germain for significant money, produced a strong start that later faded, yet still attracted United interest in the summer of 2024.

A dense set of summer transfer rumours continues to circulate, with several Premier League clubs tied to high-profile moves. Liverpool are reported ready to move on four players this summer: Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa. Chiesa is said to be a candidate to return to Serie A and has been suggested as a potential makeweight in a swap for Inter midfielder Nicolò Barella, who is valued at $69.2 million (£52.4 million, €60 million).

Newcastle have reportedly placed a $109.5 million (£82.9 million, €95 million) valuation on Anthony Gordon as they resist interest from Arsenal. Fulham midfielder Harry Wilson is attracting attention from Liverpool and Manchester United as he approaches free agency, and Roberto De Zerbi has publicly highlighted him as an ideal signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

RB Leipzig have been linked with Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, who appears likely to leave this summer. Arsenal are meanwhile expected to make a formal offer for Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane, whose agent has publicly valued him at $115.3 million (£87.3 million, €100 million).

Manchester United are reported to be planning a summer sale to raise as much as $132.1 million (£100 million) by moving Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, André Onana, Rasmus Højlund and Marcus Rashford. Newcastle are among clubs reportedly pursuing Ugarte, with Juventus thought to be leading the race for a player also admired by Aston Villa and Galatasaray; Ugarte is valued at $46.1 million (£34.9 million, €40 million).

Inter are preparing for the possible departure of Alessandro Bastoni and have identified Riccardo Calafiori as a replacement, with Juventus also showing interest. Barcelona are also considering Calafiori, who can operate at left back, centrally or in midfield. Inter have been linked with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, viewed as a value option at $23.1 million (£17.5 million, €20 million).

Vinicius Junior’s representatives have reportedly contacted Manchester United and several Premier League clubs amid stalled contract talks at Real Madrid, with Chelsea also alerted. Barcelona have set a ceiling of €50 million for Julián Alvarez while Atlético Madrid are thought to be demanding more than twice that sum. Diogo Dalot is on Real Madrid’s shortlist to replace Dani Carvajal, and Ronald Araújo’s future at Barcelona appears likely to be away from the club as they await concrete offers.

Leipzig Negotiations Could Add Release Clause, Altering Manchester United’s Diomande Option

Leipzig could add a release clause for Yan Diomande, reshaping club interest ahead of summer in 26.

RB Leipzig have opened discussions with Yan Diomande over a new contract that may include a release clause, a development that could change how suitors approach the 19-year-old this summer. Leipzig have made clear they would demand a fee in the region of $115.3 million (£87.3 million, €100 million) to be tempted to sell.

Manchester United are among clubs monitoring the situation, but a $115.3 million outlay appears unlikely for a player with barely more than one full year of senior soccer. Such a fee, the report notes, would make Diomande the second-most expensive signing in club history. A release clause, however, would remove the need for direct negotiation with Leipzig and could present an alternative route to a move.

By Fabrizio Romano’s estimation there is a “50-50” chance he takes one of two paths: cash in and leave this summer or sign a new deal which gives him more power over his future in the years to come. Diomande’s new agents are understood to be in talks with Leipzig over an improved salary after the player signed last summer in a $23 million deal with just 10 appearances for Leganés to his name.

A breakout debut season in the Bundesliga has attracted interest across Europe. Diomande registered 10 goals and seven assists in Germany’s top flight, prompting a wave of attention. Leipzig’s proposed package reportedly includes a pay rise, the promise of staying in Saxony for at least another year and the “potential inclusion” of a release clause.

That approach mirrors the path taken by Benjamin Šeško at Leipzig, who signed a new deal one year before moving to Manchester United. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also linked, with Bayern described as keen and PSG said to be “really attentive” to the forward’s situation. The contract discussions at Leipzig could therefore be decisive in shaping the market for Diomande this summer.

United Linked with Dortmund Defender Waldemar Anton as Summer Window Looms

Man United weigh move for Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton as squad rebuild and midfield exits loom .

Manchester United have been linked with Borussia Dortmund centre back Waldemar Anton in recent reports from Germany. Dortmund are expected to pursue fresh terms for Anton, but with two years remaining on his current contract suitors believe a summer approach could yield a bargain.

Anton, who turns 30 this summer, has spent much of his career under the radar. He began his senior career with Hannover before impressing at Stuttgart and earning a move to Dortmund in the summer of 2024. Standing at 6’2″, he has developed a reputation as a no-nonsense defender: willing to put his body on the line, comfortable in aerial duels and someone who gains confidence in physical encounters.

That profile only tells part of the story. Stuttgart used Anton at the base of midfield to make the most of his passing ability, and he is regarded as a smart operator on the ball. His strongest displays remain in the heart of defence, where leadership and attitude have become defining features of his game. Those who have worked with him describe “a player who gives everything in training, leads by example and knows how to encourage those around him.” The same sources say he is a model professional and could be in contention for the Dortmund captaincy if Nico Schlotterbeck departs this summer.

For United, cultivating that type of presence has been high on the agenda. Ruben Amorim helped oversee a changing of the guard and Michael Carrick has reminded the squad of what it really means to play for United. With Champions League action expected to return to Old Trafford next season, the club anticipates an active window.

Central midfield remains the priority. Casemiro’s impending departure and the likely sale of Manuel Ugarte would leave Kobbie Mainoo as the only natural midfielder. Club officials are preparing a war chest of around $250 million to sign at least two targets, including Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. Improvements at full back and potentially at striker if Joshua Zirkzee leaves are also expected, while opinion is divided on whether another central defender is required. On paper United have depth at centre back, with Harry Maguire on the cusp of a new contract alongside Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, De Ligt and Martínez, but fitness considerations could alter plans.
