Carrick Sticks to Brief Response on Manchester United Future After Chelsea Defeat
Carrick insists he expects to remain in charge as Manchester United prepare for Roma on Tuesday.
Michael Carrick kept his answer short when asked whether he would still be in charge for Manchester United’s meeting with Roma on Tuesday. His reply was simply: “Yes.”
The pressure on Carrick continues to rise with every setback, even though United produced a strong first half against Chelsea before the match shifted decisively after Lisandro Martínez was sent off in the 63rd minute. At a club where outcomes matter above everything else, that is the detail that will carry the most weight.
Carrick later told TNT Sports that he expects to still be manager for the Champions League game next week. He added: “I’m just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek now.”
For now, the signs suggest he may survive a little longer, but the situation remains fragile. After the final whistle at Stamford Bridge, supporters applauded Carrick, just as they had done after last weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth. The players, by contrast, were met with boos from the travelling fans.
“There is a lot of emotion,” Carrick said. “We’re a great football club, and we want to win football matches. The supporters come, make a lot of effort, pay a lot of money to watch us play. You can see from today the boys had the game in the right place and things have gone against us.
“Things have gone against us and gone against us in a big way. Unraveled quickly. There’s a lot of emotion right now. We have got to move forward and take the things that worked for us today. A lot of the good things, especially in the first half and use that moving forward.”
United’s recent run has brought more than one explanation. An incorrectly given goal from Enzo Fernández cost them in the Manchester derby, while Leny Yoro’s dismissal left them with 10 men in the 2–0 loss to Atlético Madrid. Injuries have also denied Carrick players such as Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Šeško, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu for long stretches.
Even so, there is little to excuse the collapse against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup third round, or the heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth. The club’s midfield rebuild looks badly off course, and the defence needed attention years ago.
Blame is shared among the players, Jason Wilcox and Carrick, but only the manager is under immediate threat. Roma now offers another test, and a difficult one at that. The Italian side have lost only once in all competitions this season, a 4–3 defeat to Real Madrid, and have been kept scoreless only once in 2026-27.

Real Madrid move into pole position for JJ Gabriel after PSG rejection
Real Madrid are now favourites for JJ Gabriel after the teenager rejected a renewed PSG offer.
Real Madrid have emerged as the leading destination for JJ Gabriel after the Manchester United teenager reportedly turned down a fresh approach from Paris Saint-Germain.
The latest development adds another layer to a transfer story that has been building quickly around one of the game’s most talked-about prospects. Gabriel, last season’s U-18 Premier League Player of the Year, is said to be unsettled after what has been described as “Broken promises” over first-team opportunities. Reports have also pointed to difficulties between the player’s family and the club, which has fuelled the expectation that his next step will come away from Old Trafford.
United have offered Gabriel a scholarship contract that would prevent him from leaving for free, but that has not altered the wider picture. As interest gathered from several major clubs, Real Madrid were viewed as the team best placed to secure him from the outset, and recent reports have only strengthened that impression.
SPORT reported that PSG were still trying to stay in the race, putting forward improved economic and sporting terms to Gabriel’s camp. Their hope was to persuade him to join a club where young players have been given opportunities, with Luis Enrique regularly using them during his time in Paris. Dro Fernández, for example, has already made 21 appearances since arriving from Barcelona in January.
Even so, the report states that Gabriel and those around him rejected the offer from the back-to-back Champions League winners. The teenager is said not to believe that leaving the Premier League for Ligue 1 would be the best move for his development, and instead prefers Spain.
Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also understood to be out of the running, leaving Real Madrid with a clear path if one final issue is resolved. That obstacle is the approval of a valid European Union passport.
Gabriel, born and raised in England to an Irish father, is currently working towards a Cypriot passport through his mother’s heritage. Once that is in place, a move to Spain would become possible. He turned 16 on Oct. 6, allowing him to sign a professional contract under FIFA’s regulations on minors and overseas transfers.

United Plan to Delay Carrick Decision as Run Reaches Nine Games Without a Win
United are waiting until the November break before deciding Carrick’s future after nine winless games.
Manchester United are reportedly prepared to give Michael Carrick until the November international break before making any decision on his future.
That stance comes after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea, a match that slipped away from the visitors once Lisandro Martínez was sent off just after the hour. The result extended United’s winless sequence to nine games, the club’s worst such stretch since 1988, long before the Premier League era began.
The Athletic report that United hope to reach the international break before they are forced to act on Carrick’s position. The timing fits with the confidence Carrick showed after the final whistle in west London, when he said he expected to still be in charge for Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Roma.
United have two matches left before the break. First comes Roma, a side arriving in form with a five-game unbeaten run and 18 goals scored during that spell. Carrick’s defence will face another demanding test, even with Old Trafford behind them, and United are seeking only their second Champions League victory of the season.
Five days later, Aston Villa arrive. United beat them 3-1 last March in one of the brighter moments of Carrick’s interim spell, but repeating that outcome now looks considerably more difficult. Villa, after beating Manchester City last weekend, present a tougher challenge for a side with only two wins in all competitions this season.
Opinion around Carrick remains split. Some believe the blame lies mainly with the players and with sporting director Jason Wilcox after a poor summer transfer window. Others cannot understand why United have not already moved on after such a difficult start to 2026-27.
United have seven points from nine Premier League matches and sit 17th. They are level on points with Crystal Palace in 18th and remain outside the bottom three only by virtue of goal difference, at -5.
Asked whether there is any stigma around United being in the relegation zone, Carrick said, “Not from me, no.” When pressed on the prospect of a survival battle, he added, “Got to keep moving forward and winning games, simple as that,” and then said, “There’s no words that I’m going to explain to you now that makes it any different; it’s not going to change it.”

Fernandes restored to the starting XI as Carrick reshapes United for Chelsea
Fernandes returns to the XI and the armband as Carrick alters United’s midfield for Chelsea.
Bruno Fernandes is back in Manchester United’s starting side for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea, and he will also reclaim the captain’s armband.
Michael Carrick moved quickly to make clear that Fernandes had not been permanently relieved of the role, and the Portugal international now returns to lead United again. Before the match, Carrick said: “He’s the one that’s kind of led the team so well for many a game and many a year, and he’ll continue to do that,” Carrick promised before the game.
Fernandes is part of a changed United midfield, with summer signing Youri Tielemans dropping to the bench for the first time this season. Carlos Baleba and former Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos start behind him, while Fernandes is set to play further forward.
There is also a welcome return on the bench for Kobbie Mainoo, who has recovered from injury in time to make the matchday squad. He is joined among the substitutes by Chelsea academy graduate Mason Mount.
United’s starting XI is Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martínez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo. Their substitutes are Darlow, De Ligt, Heaven, Mazraoui, Mainoo, Mount, Tielemans, Lacey, Zirkzee.
Chelsea line up with Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwil, Palestra; Caicedo, Lavia; Neto, Palmer, Estêvão; Rogers. Their substitutes are Sharman-Lowe, Subuloye, Gusto, Chavarría, Barco, Nicoll-Jazuli, Quenda, Emegha, Welbeck.
Carrick’s adjustments come amid a difficult spell for United. A run of eight matches without a win had fuelled expectations that his time at Old Trafford might be coming to an end, but club officials have decided to give him another opportunity to arrest the slide.
