Arsenal’s Girona Win Showed Control, Depth and Several Encouraging Individual Displays
Arsenal beat Girona 4-1 as Dowman, Tzolis and the defence all made promising preseason impressions.
Arsenal began preseason with a 4-1 win over Girona, and the performance reflected the balance, quality and depth that Mikel Arteta now has available. The contest was disrupted later by substitutions, but before that point Arsenal had already taken control and made the stronger impression.
Girona briefly found a route back into the game after the interval when Arnau Martínez won in the air from a corner. Arsenal answered quickly. Dowman restored the two-goal advantage with a sharp finish into the bottom corner, and Gabriel Jesus then converted after a Ben White recovery to make it 4-1 in the 55th minute. From there, the match became more fractured, though the outcome had been settled in all but name.
Dowman stood out as Arsenal’s most dangerous player. He continually looked capable of producing something decisive, and that feeling proved justified. In one early move he dropped into midfield, received the ball, turned away from his marker with a strong first touch and played a perfectly weighted pass that put Havertz through one-on-one with the goalkeeper. When Girona scored, Dowman responded by taking the ball in the right half-space, cutting inside and driving a shot into the bottom corner. His creativity and finishing were both evident, but so was his understanding of when to release the ball, when to keep possession moving and when to beat a man.
Tzolis also offered encouraging signs in his Arsenal debut. The left winger, signed from Club Brugge, held the width on the left and worked within Arteta’s positional structure. His first goal for the club came after Ricardo Calafiori found him in space inside the box, and he finished after a slight deflection. He is still imperfect, especially on his weak foot, but he ended the game with the joint-most touches in the opposition box.
The back line was equally notable. With Jurriën Timber, Gabriel and William Saliba absent, Arsenal still fielded Ben White, Piero Hincapié, Christian Mosquera and Ricardo Calafiori. Girona managed only two shots in the first half, both from outside the box and off target. Ethan Nwaneri, back from Marseille, completed all 26 of his passes but had limited impact in the final third.

Arsenal’s first defeat of the season left Bruno Guimarães describing a dressing room full of complaints.
Arsenal’s first defeat of the season brought a bleak assessment from inside the dressing room after Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. Bruno Guimarães said the reaction among the players was immediate, with the standard of the performance falling well below what was expected.
“In the first throw, you could sense it, it was so clear,” Arteta lamented, whispering through his postmatch press conference with a thinly veiled sense of fury. The mood was not much brighter in the locker room around the corner.
Guimarães described the match as one to move past, but not before stressing how badly Arsenal had fallen short. “I think today is a day to forget,” he said after his first Premier League start for the club. “Everything we tried didn’t work. Credit to them [Brighton] as well but we can’t accept this here.
“I think in the changing room, everyone was complaining about ourselves, about the level we played today. Like I said, it’s not acceptable. A very bad day in the office.”
Arteta viewed the defeat as a failure to meet the demands of the game. Brighton’s pressing and direct play repeatedly forced Arsenal into errors, and the Arsenal manager said his side had not matched the basics required in the Premier League.
“Brighton were another gear up from us,” Arteta fumed. “We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game. And from our side there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”
He added: “In the first duel, the second ball, that put the game, especially how direct they were, in a really difficult place for us,” Arteta added. “On top of that, when we did regain the ball, especially in our own half, the amount of technical errors that we did and we didn’t respect any principle of play that you have to get out of those man-to-man situations.”
Guimarães was among the most disappointing performers in red, especially given the expectations behind his summer move. Recognising his part in the collapse, he then issued a message of apology to the Arsenal fanbase and promised better days ahead.

Arsenal were beaten 3-0 by Brighton as their strong start to 2026/27 unraveled badly.
Arsenal’s flawless opening to the 2026/27 campaign was brought to a sharp halt as Brighton & Hove Albion ran out 3-0 winners in the Premier League. What had been a controlled start to the season quickly unravelled, with Arsenal producing a passive first-half showing and then finding no route back after the interval.
Brighton set the tone early, pressing with intensity and punishing Arsenal’s slow reactions in defensive areas. The hosts’ first two goals followed a strikingly similar pattern, with Groß and Kostoulas both given the space to shoot from around 20 yards. Arsenal were slow to close down the ball, and Gabriel was singled out for failing to step out quickly enough, although the problems stretched across the team.
After the break, Arsenal were expected to respond, but the pattern barely changed. Brighton continued to control the contest, and Chema Andrés ended any lingering hope with a header that made the lead unassailable. Arsenal’s best chance to reduce the deficit fell to Kai Havertz, but he failed to take it.
The performance was especially surprising given how strong Arsenal’s defence had looked in the opening four league matches. Before this trip, Morgan Rogers had been the only player to score against David Raya, and Arsenal had conceded just 2.7 expected goals. At Brighton, though, the back line looked unusually sluggish, while the attack offered very little in return.
Mikel Arteta’s side never recovered their composure, and the closing stages brought little more than frustration for the travelling support. Arsenal were poor in possession, blunt in the final third and repeatedly beaten in defensive zones. It was not a collapse that should define their season, but it did end the sense of invulnerability that had built around them in recent weeks.

Arteta urges Arsenal focus as club history beckons
Arteta has warned Arsenal not to lose focus as they target an eight-game winning start.
Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to keep their feet on the ground as they close in on a piece of history. A win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday would give the Gunners eight straight victories to begin a season for the first time since 1903, but the manager made clear that the milestone cannot become a distraction.
“We’ve got a really tough opponent tomorrow so we’re going to have to earn the right to win the game,” he warned. “But certainly that will be the mindset of the players and the team.”
Arteta was also asked whether he had expected Arsenal to open the campaign with seven consecutive wins. He said the signs were encouraging over the summer, even if he knew the challenge would be severe.
“Well, we know how complicated it is to win a football match at this level,” he confessed. “So to win seven, it tells the story.
“After the World Cup , especially, there were a lot of unknowns about how the players and the team were going to react. We didn’t have any time with them to work together. But I said from day one, I think the attitude and what I was seeing, I was really impressed with.
“Then you have to put it down to performances. We had a bit of luck as well, for sure, to win four matches. And we are here. And then we want to make another one for sure tomorrow.”
Arsenal’s best start to a season remains the eight-game run from 1903-04. In that era, Woolwich Arsenal were in the Second Division, and their sequence included emphatic wins over sides that finished in very different places in the table. Even so, the campaign also featured a 4-0 victory over Manchester United, with Arsenal ending the season with the division’s highest totals for goals scored and fewest conceded.
