Newcastle United’s summer has taken on a familiar and uncomfortable theme, with Eddie Howe again forced to address the prospect of losing one of his leading players.

Arsenal’s interest in Bruno Guimarães has become the latest example. Newcastle have already turned down a $73 million (£55 million) bid for the Brazil midfielder, while reports say Arsenal are preparing an improved offer of $93.2 million (£70 million). It is also claimed Guimarães has agreed personal terms with the Gunners.

Speaking after Newcastle’s 1-1 preseason draw with Gateshead, Howe made clear how little control he feels he has over the situation. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future,” Howe told Sky Sports after Newcastle’s 1–1 preseason draw with Gateshead. “That’s for other people to speculate about, but also conversations that I’m not part of.”

The possibility of another exit lands hard because Newcastle have already lost several important names this summer. Anthony Gordon has moved on to Barcelona on a five-year deal, while Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record £100 million ($132.8 million). Last September, Alexander Isak also left for Liverpool.

Those departures sit against the backdrop of a difficult season, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League and missing out on European soccer. For Howe, the issue is broader than one transfer chase. “We don’t want to lose our best players. That’s an obvious statement to make,” Howe said. “So, losing [Gordon and Tonali] is painful for us, and difficult.

“For me, it’s been another challenging summer so far, but we’re always trying to do our best for the football club, short and long-term, and try and get the squad in its best shape.”

Even with the uncertainty around Guimarães, Howe kept his comments on the midfielder strictly positive. “We’ve had some really good conversations, before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup,” Howe stated. “What we speak about obviously has to remain private, but just a great player, a great person.”

Real Madrid are prepared to set a club-record asking price for Vinícius Jr as they try to protect one of their most valuable assets from Premier League champions Arsenal.

The winger remains in contract limbo, with no club-to-club negotiations yet reported. Even so, it has been suggested that Arsenal have already made contact with Vinícius’s representatives as an initial move. Madrid, meanwhile, are understood to be facing a simple choice: renew or sell.

Should they decide to move him on, SPORT report that the Spanish club will not consider any offer below $182 million (€160 million). That figure would eclipse the current record sale, the €117 million move of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in 2018.

Vinícius has consistently said he wants to remain at the Bernabéu, while president Florentino Pérez has stated that he wants the forward at the club for “the rest of his life”. Yet agreement has still proved difficult.

AS reports that Madrid expect contract talks to restart next week, once the player returns from his post-World Cup vacation. Before that meeting, Vinícius is said to want a conversation with new manager José Mourinho to understand the new project and where he fits into it.

Madrid have gone two seasons without a trophy, and Mourinho’s arrival has been presented as part of a wider shift after frustration on and off the pitch. AS also states that renewal talks were already “well advanced” before stalling after last summer’s Club World Cup, with the gap between the two sides now described as “minimal”.

The same report says Vinícius is seeking around €20 million ($23 million) net per season, down from earlier claims of a €30 million ($34 million) demand. His current deal, last renewed in 2022, is worth around €15 million ($17 million) net annually plus bonuses, including one tied to winning The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, which he did in 2024.

Madrid’s €100 million pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande is said to be separate. If Arsenal were to pursue Vinícius seriously, they would need to make him their highest-paid player by a clear margin, on top of paying a major transfer fee.

Arsenal’s search for greater threat on the left flank has taken them into rare territory, with Vinícius Júnior now viewed as the most ambitious answer to a long-running issue. The club have already brought in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge to cover for the departure of Leandro Trossard, yet the pursuit of another wide attacker suggests the work in that area is not finished. Before Morgan Rogers moved to London neighbours Chelsea, Arsenal had also considered him for the same role.

A move for Vinícius Jr is still only at an early stage, and Real Madrid are understood to be reluctant to part with him. Even so, the 26-year-old is into the final year of his contract and talks are at a standstill, leaving his future uncertain. That makes this summer the most realistic opening Arsenal may get if they want to test the scale of the deal.

Tactically, the fit is obvious. Vinícius Jr would take over the left wing immediately, regardless of Tzolis’s arrival. His game is built on staying wide, isolating full-backs and driving at them, then either reaching the byline or cutting inside onto his stronger right foot to shoot or slip a pass into the box. Arsenal have lacked consistent production from that side for much of 2025-26, with Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli combining for only seven league goals. Eberechi Eze also spent time there, but he is most effective centrally.

Arsenal’s attack has largely leaned to the right, where Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard are usually the main reference points. Vinícius Jr on the opposite side would change that balance at once, forcing defenders to respect both flanks. He would also offer a major solution against deep defensive blocks through his dribbling, close control and ability to beat multiple opponents alone.

There is also value in his combination play and his threat in transition, both of which suit Arsenal’s style. The drawback is his limited defensive work, but the club’s strong defensive base would help cover that. The biggest losers would be Gabriel Martinelli and Tzolis, with the latter likely reduced to backup duty if the move ever happened.
