Gameweek 36: Predictions and the decisive weekend in the Premier League

Gameweek 36 predictions: how title and relegation battles could shift across a decisive weekend. GW36

Published

on

Gameweek 36 arrives with the title race and relegation battle closely entwined, producing a weekend of high stakes across the division.

Liverpool host Chelsea in a fixture heavy with history but fragile form. Chelsea arrive having lost six consecutive league games and were comprehensively beaten by a heavily rotated Nottingham Forest side on Monday. Arne Slot’s soon-to-be-dethroned champions have shown similar frailties this term, while Liverpool likely need just a point to secure Champions League football. Last week’s defeat at Old Trafford leaves Liverpool with questions, so a competitive affair looks likely. Prediction: Liverpool 1–1 Chelsea.

Brighton travel to Wolves, a tie with relegation context. Wolves had shown signs of recovery under Rob Edwards but recent momentum has stalled. They earned a point at home to Sunderland after three straight defeats, and remain without an away win in the Premier League this season. Brighton seek to respond to a poor result on Tyneside and recently extended Fabian Hürzeler’s contract, aiming to justify that faith with European qualification. Prediction: Brighton 2–0 Wolves.

Fulham host Bournemouth, who have remained unbeaten since parting ways with Antoine Semenyo in January and sit sixth. Fulham have been generally meek on the road but possess the sixth-best home record, with 10 wins from 17. Both clubs still harbour continental hopes, making this a tight contest. Prediction: Fulham 1–1 Bournemouth.

Manchester United travel to Sunderland after completing a first league double over Liverpool in a decade and sealing Champions League qualification. Sunderland are winless in three and conceded five to Forest at home previously. United have won the last three meetings, including 2–0 in the reverse fixture, and will be without suspended Dan Ballard. Prediction: Sunderland 0–1 Man Utd.

Manchester City welcome Brentford aiming to apply pressure on Arsenal after Jérémy Doku’s stoppage-time equaliser salvaged a point. City can push the title race back on Arsenal by beating Brentford, a side that has won at the Etihad since Covid. Prediction: Man City 3–1 Brentford.

Other selections: Burnley 0–1 Aston Villa, Crystal Palace 0–2 Everton, Nott’m Forest 2–2 Newcastle, West Ham 1–2 Arsenal and Tottenham 2–1 Leeds. Across the weekend the ties could produce decisive movement in both the title fight and relegation zone.

Florian Wirtz under scrutiny after slow start at Liverpool

Wirtz arrived with huge expectations, but his Liverpool impact has so far fallen far short.

Florian Wirtz arrived at Anfield with a reputation that bordered on untouchable. Jürgen Klopp described him as a “once-in-a-century talent.” Liverpool backed that belief with a $159 million move as part of their rebuild before the 2025-26 campaign, expecting him to help drive the club into a new level under Arne Slot.

So far, though, the story has not matched the scale of the investment. At 23, Wirtz has often failed to influence Liverpool when they have needed him most, and his performances are being judged more harshly with each passing week.

The logic behind the signing was obvious. At Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz produced numbers that made him one of the most coveted players in Europe. Under Xabi Alonso, he developed from highly rated prospect into a major attacking force. His 37 goal involvements in 2023-24 helped Leverkusen to a domestic double and a place in the Europa League final. He followed that with 30 more contributions the next season, reinforcing his consistency.

Liverpool were not alone in pursuing him. Real Madrid and Manchester City were also interested, while Bayern Munich were left frustrated by a rare failure to land one of the Bundesliga’s standout talents. Wirtz, however, only wanted Liverpool.

The adaptation has been difficult. Liverpool’s decline under Slot, the struggles of those around him and the usual adjustment to a new league can all be cited as factors, but his output has still fallen well short of expectations. It took two months for him to record a goal or assist in a competitive match, before a pair of assists against Eintracht Frankfurt. He then waited another two months for his first Premier League goal involvement, an assist against Tottenham Hotspur.

That moment sparked a brief upturn. Before February, he added six goals and two assists and won Liverpool’s Player of the Month award in January. But the form did not last, and over the final four months he managed only one goal and two assists.

The World Cup offered another chance to recover rhythm, and his return of three assists was tempered by Germany’s shock early exit to Paraguay. With an extended preseason under Andoni Iraola, progress was expected, yet the early signs remain modest. He leads Liverpool for ground covered, but has only one assist in his opening six league matches.

Public backing from Iraola and Klopp has not stopped the criticism, including from Jamie Carragher, who said: “That was one of the poorest I’ve ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt,” and added: “The reason I worry is, I don’t think Wirtz is in poor form since he came to Liverpool. I actually think what we’re seeing is what he is.”

Wirtz remains a gifted technician, but the Premier League has so far restricted his impact far more than Liverpool expected.

Premier League table recalculated without VAR after early season controversy

The table shifts without VAR, but United, Forest and Haaland remain central to the early debate.

With five games played in the 2026/27 season, the Premier League has already been dragged into a series of officiating disputes despite hopes of a lighter touch. Howard Webb has issued an apology that was quickly rejected, and further explanations are still being awaited across the division.

Removing VAR from the picture changes the table in several places, but Manchester United remain the major talking point. Erling Haaland’s winner in the Manchester derby should not have stood, according to Webb’s own acknowledgement, after officials became caught in what he described as “tunnel vision.” The issue centred on Enzo Fernández’s movement in front of Lisandro Martínez, while VAR Matt Donohue focused on whether Haaland was onside when he turned the ball in past Senne Lammens.

Even so, United would still sit 12th with the additional point, showing that the decision was costly without transforming their wider position.

At the top, Arsenal would move clear of the rest on 12 points, with Brentford and Manchester City next on 11. Liverpool would also be better off overall, although their draw in this version of the table follows the denied goal against Nottingham Forest when Florian Wirtz’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Forest are one of the biggest beneficiaries of the no-VAR table. Oliver Glasner’s side would climb to 10th, helped by the sense that they have been denied three points in separate incidents. Neco Williams had a goal disallowed against Tottenham Hotspur after an alleged handball in a goal-line scramble with Sandro Tonali, and that decision came without any definitive camera angle proving the offence. Williams later posted: “Clear and obvious they say,” while Glasner added after the Coventry City match: “Of course I have thoughts but I don’t want to speak about it again,” after Igor Jesus was judged to have tripped Caleb Yirenkyi before scoring.

Haaland’s own frustration also featured in the aftermath of the derby. He said: “I thought there was maybe someone who had flicked it, I don’t normally go offside,” and added: “I talked to [referee] Michael Oliver and I told him I took it personal that he thought I went offside.”

The record suggests otherwise. As the draft notes, Haaland has only been correctly flagged offside once this season.

Four possible next stops for Alexis Mac Allister after Liverpool contract uncertainty

Liverpool have not offered Alexis Mac Allister a new deal, leaving interest from Manchester City and Atlético Madrid.

Alexis Mac Allister’s future has become a talking point after Liverpool chose not to hand him a new contract. The midfielder remains tied to Anfield until 2028, but the absence of an extension has left the situation open to interpretation.

His standing at the club has not always been in doubt. Mac Allister was outstanding in his first season and played a central role as Liverpool secured their second Premier League title in 2024-25. Even so, there was a clear drop-off during Arne Slot’s difficult second season in charge, which explains why the club may be reluctant to move quickly.

The 27-year-old has since apologised for remarks he made, saying they were the result of an emotional reaction to a difficult moment. That has not removed the broader issue, though. With no renewal agreed and the contract already ticking towards its final years, interest from elsewhere remains a realistic possibility.

One club mentioned in connection with him is Manchester City, who were viewed as considering him as a possible alternative to Enzo Fernández in the summer. However, they ultimately moved on to their preferred option, and after restructuring their midfield so quickly, a move for a player with Mac Allister’s profile appears unlikely in the near term.

Atlético Madrid also sit among the potential destinations. Diego Simeone has not been shy about welcoming compatriots, and the club may soon need to think about succession planning around Koke, whose long service remains remarkable. At the same time, Atlético are already well stocked in midfield, with Morten Hjulmand and Kang Lee-in added in the summer, while Pablo Barrios, Rodrigo Mendoza and Ottó Vargas are all part of the picture.

That makes Mac Allister less of a specific target and more of a market opportunity. Even so, Simeone’s interest is easy to imagine.
