Arteta Close to New Arsenal Deal as Talks Move Forward
Arsenal are close to extending Mikel Arteta’s deal, with talks advancing and confidence high.
Arsenal are nearing agreement with Mikel Arteta over a new contract, with the club increasingly confident that fresh terms will be signed.
The Spaniard’s current deal runs to the end of the season, but BBC Sport report that discussions have accelerated since the summer transfer window closed. Inside the club, there is said to be complete belief that Arteta will extend his stay.
Arteta addressed the situation in August and made his position plain: “Everybody feels comfortable that the timing of the contract is not going to be an issue because my will certainly is to be here and I’m very happy here.”
A new agreement will also bring a major rise in salary. The 44-year-old already earns $13.5 million a year, along with a $6.8 million bonus tied to Champions League qualification, and the extension would place him among the best paid managers in the game.
His influence at the club is a major reason he is prepared to commit again. The report describes him as Arsenal’s “most influential figure” and says his role in how the club is run is just as significant as his work on the pitch. Recruitment decisions, in particular, go through him, and his presence shaped another busy summer.
He was reportedly at the “forefront of the club’s charm offensive” in unsuccessful moves for Vinícius Júnior and Julián Alvarez. Deals for Bruno Guimarães, Christos Tzolis and Ezri Konsa were also sanctioned by Arteta, as were the sales of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.
On the field, Arsenal have opened the campaign strongly. They have won all four competitive fixtures, including a Community Shield victory over Manchester City, and have conceded only once. Their Premier League expected goals against Coventry City, Aston Villa and Chelsea stands at just 0.9.
The team’s ability to control games remains central to their progress, especially after last season’s Premier League title. Even so, the forward line is still viewed as the most obvious area for improvement, with technical quality not yet matched by the ruthless edge seen at several of Europe’s leading sides.

Arsenal dressing room left frustrated after Brighton defeat
Arsenal’s first defeat of the season left Bruno Guimarães describing a dressing room full of complaints.
Arsenal’s first defeat of the season brought a bleak assessment from inside the dressing room after Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. Bruno Guimarães said the reaction among the players was immediate, with the standard of the performance falling well below what was expected.
“In the first throw, you could sense it, it was so clear,” Arteta lamented, whispering through his postmatch press conference with a thinly veiled sense of fury. The mood was not much brighter in the locker room around the corner.
Guimarães described the match as one to move past, but not before stressing how badly Arsenal had fallen short. “I think today is a day to forget,” he said after his first Premier League start for the club. “Everything we tried didn’t work. Credit to them [Brighton] as well but we can’t accept this here.
“I think in the changing room, everyone was complaining about ourselves, about the level we played today. Like I said, it’s not acceptable. A very bad day in the office.”
Arteta viewed the defeat as a failure to meet the demands of the game. Brighton’s pressing and direct play repeatedly forced Arsenal into errors, and the Arsenal manager said his side had not matched the basics required in the Premier League.
“Brighton were another gear up from us,” Arteta fumed. “We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game. And from our side there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”
He added: “In the first duel, the second ball, that put the game, especially how direct they were, in a really difficult place for us,” Arteta added. “On top of that, when we did regain the ball, especially in our own half, the amount of technical errors that we did and we didn’t respect any principle of play that you have to get out of those man-to-man situations.”
Guimarães was among the most disappointing performers in red, especially given the expectations behind his summer move. Recognising his part in the collapse, he then issued a message of apology to the Arsenal fanbase and promised better days ahead.

Arteta Admits Arsenal Were Outmatched From the First Throw-in at Brighton
Arteta admitted Arsenal were second best from the start as Brighton dominated them in a 3-0 defeat.
Mikel Arteta did not hide his frustration after Arsenal were overwhelmed at Brighton, admitting that his side were second best almost immediately in a defeat that exposed a clear gap in intensity.
Brighton’s 3-0 victory, delivered on the club’s 125th anniversary, was fully deserved and became Arsenal’s heaviest loss in more than three years. Although the opening goal did not arrive until the 31st minute, the contest had already tilted decisively in Brighton’s favour long before that. Their pressing from the first moments left Arsenal struggling to cope, and the visitors never recovered.
“In the first throw, you could sense it, it was so clear,” Arteta fumed, his voice barely raised above a furious whisper as he scowled through his postmatch media duties. “We put ourselves in trouble one time, two times, three times, and we need to get out of that much quicker. And that’s one of the biggest lessons that we have to take from the game.”
Arsenal were warned by Brighton’s recent form without the ball, and Arteta acknowledged that the message had been discussed beforehand. “The first thing that we had discussed, it was about the first pass,” Arteta confirmed. “If you don’t get out of that first pass as winners, it will be extremely difficult to dominate the game, and you don’t have any probability of winning the game.
“We knew that, but that’s again, credit to them for what they’ve done, because they overcame us, and they had another edge than we did, and that’s something that, at this level, it’s extremely important to respect and to understand before anything else.”
He also accepted that Brighton were stronger in the decisive duels. Arteta said Brighton “had another bite.” “There was a lot of moments when the ball is 50-50, and it changes hands, and most of the time it was for them.”
Asked whether he had considered a halftime change, Arteta admitted the thought was there but said he chose against it. “I was,” Arteta admitted after a moment of reflection, “but I would believe it wasn’t the right moment to do that with the things that we wanted to change for the second half.”

Tottenham’s home record under scrutiny after latest defeat as Arsenal’s day also sours
Tottenham’s home numbers worsen after Villa, while Arsenal’s perfect start ends with a 3-0 loss.
Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season took another turn on Saturday after defeat to Aston Villa left them with an unwanted statistic attached to their name.
According to Opta, Tottenham have now lost 50 of their 141 Premier League matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since it opened in April 2019. That is the same number of league defeats Arsenal have suffered at the Emirates Stadium across 382 top-flight matches since their move from Highbury in July 2006.
The numbers underline how costly home form has become for Tottenham. Across all competitions, they have won only five of their last 36 matches on home soil, and only two of those victories have come under De Zerbi’s guidance.
That figure will not have been lost on Arsenal supporters, but any satisfaction was brief. Just hours later, the reigning Premier League champions suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
At the Amex Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion produced a dominant display to beat the Gunners 3-0, and their fans made their feelings known with the chant, “Are you Tottenham in disguise?”
Arsenal, who had begun the season in perfect form, were repeatedly opened up by Brighton’s pressing and made to look unusually vulnerable. Their defence, which had conceded only once in the Premier League before the trip to the south coast, was breached three times as the visitors endured one of their weakest performances in recent years.
What had looked like a team growing increasingly secure in the early weeks of the campaign ended with Arsenal heading back to the capital having suffered a setback that matched the frustration Tottenham were already facing.
