Haaland backs Arsenal in title race as City continue to rebuild

Haaland says Arsenal remain the title favourites as City continue rebuilding under Maresca.

Manchester City may be leading the Premier League after three matches in the 2026/27 season, but Erling Haaland still sees Arsenal as the side best placed to go all the way.

Haaland supplied the decisive goal in City’s 1-0 win over Coventry City on Saturday, extending his strong start to the campaign with a third strike in as many appearances. Even with that form, he pointed to Arsenal as the team with the clearer title case after their 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Sunday kept both clubs on maximum points.

City sit first only because they have scored more goals than Mikel Arteta’s side, yet Haaland believes the reigning champions remain ahead in the bigger picture. For him, the difference is experience. Arsenal, he argued, have a settled structure and familiarity across the pitch, while City are still taking shape under their new direction.

“Arsenal have played together for a long time and have built this up over a longer period,” Haaland said after the win against Coventry. “A bit like City when I first joined. We’re still in a kind of rebuilding phase, but the transfer window has been fantastic, I have to say.”

He also stressed that City should draw motivation from Arsenal having ended a 22-year wait for the title by defeating them in Pep Guardiola’s final season. “We should be angry, we should feel a fire inside our belly because it’s not good enough. It’s gone two years now [without winning the Premier League] it feels like forever.” Haaland said in May. “We’re going to do everything we can, everyone that will be here next season, to win the league.”

His view reflects the reality at the club. Maresca is now in charge after the Guardiola era, and the squad has changed significantly over the last two years. Against Coventry, only Haaland, Joško Gvardiol and Rúben Dias were in the side that won City’s last league title in 2023/24.

Five players in that lineup arrived after the calendar turned to 2026, while three others are still short of two full seasons at the club. Haaland said the club deserve credit for the quality and character they have added. “Well done to the club and the people at the club,” Haaland said. “First and foremost, they’ve brought in fantastic footballers, but also great people who fit in really well. So well done to the whole club.”

Arteta reveals second injury concern after Leeds win

Arteta confirmed two ankle injuries after Leeds, with scans due and concern over Hincapié.

Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Leeds United was followed by an unwelcome injury update, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Piero Hincapié was not the only player to suffer a setback after the match.

Arteta explained that the squad had been due to train after the game, but the session ended in trouble when two players were hurt in separate incidents. The Arsenal manager said the players had not built up enough minutes to find the right rhythm, and that the club was left dealing with the consequences of those issues.

“We had a training session planned after the game for the players,” Arteta told reporters. “They didn’t have enough minutes to get everybody in the right rhythm and in two very unfortunate actions, we lost two players.

“When they have to play, they have no rhythm, and when you ask them to play, they’re going to have no impact in the game. [The injuries] could happen at the Emirates; it never happened in the seven years I was here. It could happen the next day in the training session, and that has happened before, and hopefully it happens now and doesn’t happen again. What can you do? If I knew I had a crystal ball clear, I’d say: ‘Guys, go in the Jacuzzi, everybody, I’ll see you tomorrow.’”

Both players have since been sent for scans to assess ankle damage. Arteta sounded especially cautious about Hincapié, saying, “Piero’s one looks a little bit more serious I think, but we’ll have to wait and see,” he sighed.

The setback also arrives at a difficult moment for Zubimendi. Once viewed as a central piece of the midfield rebuild, the Spaniard started 34 Premier League games last season during Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. This season has brought a different picture, with the 27-year-old named on the bench for all six league matches so far and given only 89 minutes in the competition.

He now sits behind Bruno Guimarães and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the contest to partner Declan Rice, and this injury interruption is likely to keep him out for at least a short spell, probably a matter of weeks.

Premier League Gameweek 6: the standout performers by FotMob rating

FotMob ratings highlighted the top performers from a strong Premier League Gameweek 6 return.

After a three-week international pause, the Premier League resumed with a sixth round that produced a strong spread of individual displays. Using FotMob’s player ratings, here is a rewritten look at the weekend’s top 10 performers.

Declan Rice earned an 8.3 in Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback win over Leeds United. The midfielder was central to the result, posting a match-high 89 touches, adding 10 defensive contributions and producing the kind of subtle quality that made Bruno Guimarães’s winning goal possible.

Chelsea also featured heavily. Morgan Rogers, rated 8.3, scored the Blues’ second in their 5-1 win over Bournemouth and continued to settle quickly at Stamford Bridge. His dribbling stood out, while a cross-cum-shot helped take him to four Premier League goals in six games. He also recorded a match-high 13 defensive contributions.

Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest included strong showings from Yéremy Pino and Adam Wharton, both on 8.3. Pino got on the scoresheet and created the most chances in the match with three, while Wharton supplied an assist from a corner and combined control with discipline, winning 75% of his ground duels and 100% of his aerial battles without conceding a foul.

Jérémy Doku changed Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Liverpool from the bench, yet still led the match in dribbles with five and chances created with three before finishing with a superb strike. Elliot Anderson, rated 8.5, provided relentless energy and creativity, capped by the assist for Doku’s goal.

Rayan Cherki was the top-rated City player against Liverpool at 8.6, ending the scoring with a goal that summed up his flair and confidence. João Pedro led the weekend with an 8.8 after two goals for Chelsea against Bournemouth, doing his job in the physical contest and still making a decisive attacking impact from 25 touches.

Five Premier League talking points as Gameweek 6 begins

Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Spurs, City and Liverpool face a pivotal Premier League weekend.

After an international break that was longer than most, the Premier League resumes with a slate of fixtures that should quickly restore the league to centre stage. Gameweek 6 brings heavyweight meetings, difficult home tests and plenty of pressure on sides already searching for rhythm.

Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion before the break ended a remarkable run and raised the question of how they would react. Five months had passed since their previous league loss, but the 3-0 reverse on the south coast was a severe setback. Leeds United now arrive at the Emirates Stadium unbeaten and sitting fifth, only three points behind the Gunners, while history still strongly favours Arsenal, who have won their last eight meetings with Leeds in all competitions.

Chelsea also need a response after being beaten 3-0 by Brentford. That result was their third consecutive league match without a win and the third time they have conceded three goals in a game this season. Bournemouth’s visit offers little comfort, especially with Chelsea waiting on late checks for João Pedro, Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo and Reece James. Marco Rose’s side may be winless, but they have taken points from Chelsea in four of the last six meetings.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur meet under clear pressure. United have managed only five points from a manageable run, with defeats to Hull City and 10-man Manchester City damaging the mood. Tottenham, meanwhile, sit bottom after two goalless draws and three defeats, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side arrive with their costly new arrivals yet to settle. The stakes are obvious for both clubs.

The weekend’s headline fixture comes at Liverpool, where Manchester City play for the first time since being found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. After a three-year investigation, the verdict has inevitably shifted attention onto Enzo Maresca and his players, even if they had no part in the issue. City have won all five league games under Maresca, but this is a different test entirely.

Liverpool have every reason to make the occasion felt. They have twice been runners-up to City title teams since 2009 and remain one of the most persistent challengers of the last decade. With the atmosphere set to be intense, this could become one of the defining matches of the round.
