Mourinho’s old remarks resurface as Parrott strikes against Real Madrid
Parrott answered Mourinho’s old criticism by scoring against Real Madrid after six years.
Troy Parrott, once publicly criticised by José Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur, ended up scoring the goal that handed the Portuguese coach his first Real Madrid defeat of his second spell.
It was a sharp twist in a story that had been building for more than six years. Mourinho’s long, combustible career has produced plenty of memorable lines, and this one returned to shadow him when Parrott delivered on the pitch.
The roots of the episode go back to March 2020, when Tottenham had no fit senior striker but did have Parrott impressing for the U-23s. The young forward had already become a favourite with supporters, who were chanting for the then-21-year-old despite his limited Premier League experience.
Mourinho dismissed that outside noise with a pointed assessment of how little some people knew about the player. “This is a world where lots of people, they don’t even know if Troy has long hair or short hair. Or is blonde or is dark,” Mourinho scoffed. “They don’t even know that and speak about: Troy, Troy, Troy, Troy, he should play. There was a guy behind me on the bench the other day: ‘Play Troy, play Troy.’ I don’t think he knows Troy.”
His criticism was aimed less at Parrott’s ability than at his attitude. “Every time he was playing with the kids, he was playing with the mentality of, ‘I shouldn’t be here’ or ‘I am too good to be here’ or ‘It’s not here that I want to play,’” the former Spurs coach said. “And this is an educational process that comes. I have no problem to say because I know that he will confirm.”
“Troy cannot go there [the under-age teams] with discontent, contempt. It is a process,” Mourinho added.
Parrott did feature against Norwich City in the FA Cup later that month, only to miss his penalty in a shootout defeat that was described as humiliating. He never played another senior match under Mourinho.
A few months later, the Republic of Ireland international joined Millwall on loan and later accepted the criticism in full. “To be fair, he’s such an experienced manager and he’s done nearly everything in the game, so if he feels like that’s right then there must be some truth in it and I had to take it on the chin,” Parrott explained.
Bayern Munich
Bayern admiration for JJ Gabriel highlights growing transfer pressure
Bayern’s interest in JJ Gabriel has been acknowledged, while Real Madrid are said to lead the race.
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has praised Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel as reports in Germany continue to underline the scale of interest in the teenager.
United are not compelled to agree to Gabriel’s exit request, with his youth contract running until the end of the season. Even so, the 15-year-old is attracting attention from across Europe, with clubs hopeful of persuading him with a clearer path to first-team football.
Speaking to BILD, Freund was careful not to go beyond admiration when asked about Bayern’s involvement. He said: “We know the player because he is very, very talented. An exceptional talent. But I can’t say anything more about it.”
When pressed again on whether Bayern are in talks over a move, Freund replied: “Not at the moment,” although BILD suggested that stance may not tell the full story.
The report claims Bayern have been in “close contact” with Gabriel and his father, who represents him, since February. According to the same account, the Bundesliga champions made their interest clear from that point if an opportunity to sign him emerged.
Bayern are not said to be out of the running, but the early signs point elsewhere. Gabriel and his family are understood to be weighing up options from around Europe, with first-team assurances a key factor. United were reportedly prepared to give him a senior debut during the midweek defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, only days after his exit demand.
Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano said Real Madrid are leading the race for Gabriel, a view since echoed by several outlets in England and Spain. More recently, Mario Cortegana of The Athletic said Madrid are “very confident” of winning the chase for a player whose move would cost no more than €1 million ($1.2 million) in compensation.

Carrick urges caution as Gabriel row grows around United future
Carrick says Gabriel’s welfare comes first as United weigh a 15-year-old’s uncertain future.
Michael Carrick has stressed that the priority in the JJ Gabriel situation must be the teenager’s welfare, wellbeing and exposure, as the debate around the 15-year-old intensifies.
The latest twist is believed to stem from Gabriel’s frustration over limited first-team involvement. He made an unofficial appearance from the bench in preseason, but that remains his only senior involvement so far. The forward is regarded as a major talent, while attention has also turned to his father, Joe O’Cearuill, after allegations of difficult behaviour resurfaced this week. One claim is that Gabriel’s name was changed to make him more marketable.
When it emerged that Gabriel wanted to leave Manchester United, it was suggested Carrick had intended to give him a record-breaking debut against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup. That did not materialise, and it would have been difficult for the manager to do so anyway after United let a 2-0 lead slip and were forced into a frantic search for an equaliser.
Carrick had already spoken to the media before the game, so his post-match comments at Old Trafford were the first chance to address the sudden attention around Gabriel. He avoided discussing the player’s quality or whether his future may lie elsewhere, instead focusing on the fact that the boy’s image has now spread widely.
“I think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation,” Carrick, whose own son, Jacey, is in the United academy and a year older than Gabriel.
“He’s a young boy, and the biggest thing for me, and for the club, is his welfare, wellbeing and exposure. I think all of us have to be really conscious of that in this situation.”
The safeguarding concerns are real. Gabriel requires separate changing facilities from senior players, and his age places him among only three players to have featured in 34 Premier League seasons at 15.
United can still delay matters by refusing to cancel his registration, though his academy deal runs until the end of the season. From next season, the usual route would be a first-year scholar place, with professional terms available when he turns 17 in the second year. A move abroad could come sooner, however, because Irish and Cypriot heritage may allow him access to EU passports. That gives Real Madrid a notable advantage, should he head to Spain when he turns 16 next month.
Arsenal
Twenty players making the strongest early statements in 2026/27
A selection of players have already shaped the opening weeks of 2026/27 with goals, assists and influence.
The 2026/27 season has barely gathered pace, yet several players have already forced themselves into the conversation with decisive contributions and sustained influence. While many expected the established stars to hit form quickly, a number of unexpected names have also moved sharply into view.
Arsenal’s perfect start has been built around the authority of Martin Ødegaard, who has answered last season’s criticism with goals and leadership. He began with strikes against Manchester City in the Community Shield and Coventry City in the Premier League, before adding winning goals against Chelsea and Napoli.
Chelsea’s attack has also clicked early, with Morgan Rogers joining João Pedro and Cole Palmer in a fluid front line that has already produced 15 goal involvements across all competitions. The understanding between the three is growing match by match.
Barcelona have found a solution to the loss of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, with Raphinha operating as a false nine and Lamine Yamal continuing to thrive from the right. Raphinha scored twice and assisted once against Elche, while Yamal has delivered seven goal involvements in his last three games.
Real Madrid have been positive in José Mourinho’s second spell despite the defeat to Real Betis, with Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham both prominent. Mbappé has already produced a hat-trick and further goals against Málaga and Inter Milan, while Bellingham is being used further forward and has four La Liga goal involvements.
Liverpool’s defending remains a concern under Andoni Iraola, but Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak have been dangerous in attack. Gakpo has a goal and three assists, while Isak has added a tap-in and a brace, both of his goals at Portman Road coming from Gakpo’s service.
Manchester City have won all four competitive matches under Enzo Maresca, helped by Erling Haaland’s five goals in his last three outings and four goal contributions from Rayan Cherki.
Hull City’s seven-point start, built on three clean sheets, has been inspired by Konstantinos Tzolakis, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mariano Díaz, Serhou Guirassy, Donyell Malen, Paulo Dybala and Ferran Torres have all made similarly striking starts elsewhere.
