Liverpool’s win over Ipswich brought relief for Andoni Iraola, but also selection headaches.
Andoni Iraola could finally point to a result that matched the mood he was trying to project. After back-to-back 2-2 draws, Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town offered the incoming manager a cleaner evening and, in his own words, a welcome release: “We needed this one.”
The victory brought clear positives, but it also sharpened a familiar truth about top-level squads: good performances can create their own dilemmas. For Iraola, the main concerns are not problems of shortage, but of abundance.
Alexander Isak’s first season at Liverpool was defined by frustration, injuries and a lack of fluency, with only three Premier League goals to his name. He had already reached that total by the first Friday of September in this campaign, but Iraola made clear that scoring is not the issue that occupies him most.
“My demands will not be about the goals: he’s fit, in a good shape and he will produce the numbers,” Iraola told Sky Sports after Friday’s victory. “My fights with him are more about other stuff, how to help the team in other situations. But it’s good he has played two full games and today a good amount of minutes, scoring the goals.”
The wider point is simple enough. Iraola’s football relies on relentless work without the ball, beginning with the centre forward. Evanilson set that benchmark at Bournemouth, and Isak is still being pushed to match that level of collective effort. Iraola stressed that the press must function as a unit if the striker is to be found in the right areas.
Cody Gakpo’s form adds another layer. He provided both assists for Isak against Ipswich and has begun the season in productive fashion, having also set up the striker against Forest. That is where the selection tension begins to emerge.
Bradley Barcola’s arrival from Paris Saint-Germain only heightens it. The winger had a brief outing on Friday and can operate on the right, but his best position is on the left, the same side favoured by Gakpo. Liverpool have strengthened, but that strength now demands difficult choices.

The Cherries have produced a striking sequence of results across multiple competitions, and with Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson supported by Eli Junior Kroupi’s return, they look well placed to extend that momentum.
Other calls point to draws for Brentford against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United against Everton, while Coventry and Sunderland are forecast to cancel each other out. Hull are backed to edge Ipswich 1-0, and Manchester City are favoured to beat Brighton 3-2 in what could be the weekend’s most open game.
Tottenham are projected to keep improving with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, while Aston Villa are expected to defeat Fulham 3-0 after their recent uptick in form. The standout result, though, is at Anfield, where Arsenal are predicted to win 2-1 after Liverpool’s recent consistency meets a team looking to respond after a cup setback.
