August’s Premier League award nominees reflect strong starts across the division

August’s nominees reflect strong starts, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and more all well represented.

September’s arrival closes the opening month of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, and the first set of monthly awards has a familiar look to it.

Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White was the last player to claim the prize, doing so in April, while Pep Guardiola picked up the managerial honour for the final time as Manchester City boss.

Among the player nominees, Arsenal full-back Riccardo Calafiori stands out not only for his role in two clean sheets, but also for his work at the other end. The marauding left back, who scored in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, has already produced two assists from two appearances.

Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki has matched that assist tally, while also adding two goals in just 109 minutes. His early contribution has made him a central figure in the Enzo Maresca era.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has taken a different route, with three goals from two matches and one assist. Every one of his goal contributions came in the 5-2 win over Ipswich Town.

Chelsea are represented by Cole Palmer and João Pedro. Palmer has two goals and an assist, while Pedro’s return is even stronger, with two goals and two assists after an impressive start under Xabi Alonso.

Brentford’s Mamadou Sangaré has also impressed quickly. The former Lens man made a major impression in his first two appearances, including an assist in the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Hull City goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis has likewise caught the eye. Signed for a club-record fee in August, he has kept two clean sheets and did so despite facing 21 shots in the win over Man Utd.

Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa completes the shortlist after a lively start under Matthias Jaissle. Deployed both as an attacking midfielder and a striker, he has already recorded a goal and an assist.

The manager nominees are drawn from the four teams that have started perfectly. Mikel Arteta has kept Arsenal defensively disciplined, with opponents restricted to just one shot on target.

Xabi Alonso has also begun with two wins from two at Chelsea, whose seven goals match Brighton & Hove Albion’s total from the opening pair of matches. Palmer and Pedro have been central to that start, alongside new signing Morgan Rogers in attack.

Arteta reveals second injury concern after Leeds win

Arteta confirmed two ankle injuries after Leeds, with scans due and concern over Hincapié.

Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Leeds United was followed by an unwelcome injury update, with Mikel Arteta confirming that Piero Hincapié was not the only player to suffer a setback after the match.

Arteta explained that the squad had been due to train after the game, but the session ended in trouble when two players were hurt in separate incidents. The Arsenal manager said the players had not built up enough minutes to find the right rhythm, and that the club was left dealing with the consequences of those issues.

“We had a training session planned after the game for the players,” Arteta told reporters. “They didn’t have enough minutes to get everybody in the right rhythm and in two very unfortunate actions, we lost two players.

“When they have to play, they have no rhythm, and when you ask them to play, they’re going to have no impact in the game. [The injuries] could happen at the Emirates; it never happened in the seven years I was here. It could happen the next day in the training session, and that has happened before, and hopefully it happens now and doesn’t happen again. What can you do? If I knew I had a crystal ball clear, I’d say: ‘Guys, go in the Jacuzzi, everybody, I’ll see you tomorrow.’”

Both players have since been sent for scans to assess ankle damage. Arteta sounded especially cautious about Hincapié, saying, “Piero’s one looks a little bit more serious I think, but we’ll have to wait and see,” he sighed.

The setback also arrives at a difficult moment for Zubimendi. Once viewed as a central piece of the midfield rebuild, the Spaniard started 34 Premier League games last season during Arsenal’s title-winning campaign. This season has brought a different picture, with the 27-year-old named on the bench for all six league matches so far and given only 89 minutes in the competition.

He now sits behind Bruno Guimarães and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the contest to partner Declan Rice, and this injury interruption is likely to keep him out for at least a short spell, probably a matter of weeks.

Premier League Gameweek 6: the standout performers by FotMob rating

FotMob ratings highlighted the top performers from a strong Premier League Gameweek 6 return.

After a three-week international pause, the Premier League resumed with a sixth round that produced a strong spread of individual displays. Using FotMob’s player ratings, here is a rewritten look at the weekend’s top 10 performers.

Declan Rice earned an 8.3 in Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback win over Leeds United. The midfielder was central to the result, posting a match-high 89 touches, adding 10 defensive contributions and producing the kind of subtle quality that made Bruno Guimarães’s winning goal possible.

Chelsea also featured heavily. Morgan Rogers, rated 8.3, scored the Blues’ second in their 5-1 win over Bournemouth and continued to settle quickly at Stamford Bridge. His dribbling stood out, while a cross-cum-shot helped take him to four Premier League goals in six games. He also recorded a match-high 13 defensive contributions.

Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest included strong showings from Yéremy Pino and Adam Wharton, both on 8.3. Pino got on the scoresheet and created the most chances in the match with three, while Wharton supplied an assist from a corner and combined control with discipline, winning 75% of his ground duels and 100% of his aerial battles without conceding a foul.

Jérémy Doku changed Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Liverpool from the bench, yet still led the match in dribbles with five and chances created with three before finishing with a superb strike. Elliot Anderson, rated 8.5, provided relentless energy and creativity, capped by the assist for Doku’s goal.

Rayan Cherki was the top-rated City player against Liverpool at 8.6, ending the scoring with a goal that summed up his flair and confidence. João Pedro led the weekend with an 8.8 after two goals for Chelsea against Bournemouth, doing his job in the physical contest and still making a decisive attacking impact from 25 touches.

Five Premier League talking points as Gameweek 6 begins

Arsenal, Chelsea, United, Spurs, City and Liverpool face a pivotal Premier League weekend.

After an international break that was longer than most, the Premier League resumes with a slate of fixtures that should quickly restore the league to centre stage. Gameweek 6 brings heavyweight meetings, difficult home tests and plenty of pressure on sides already searching for rhythm.

Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion before the break ended a remarkable run and raised the question of how they would react. Five months had passed since their previous league loss, but the 3-0 reverse on the south coast was a severe setback. Leeds United now arrive at the Emirates Stadium unbeaten and sitting fifth, only three points behind the Gunners, while history still strongly favours Arsenal, who have won their last eight meetings with Leeds in all competitions.

Chelsea also need a response after being beaten 3-0 by Brentford. That result was their third consecutive league match without a win and the third time they have conceded three goals in a game this season. Bournemouth’s visit offers little comfort, especially with Chelsea waiting on late checks for João Pedro, Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo and Reece James. Marco Rose’s side may be winless, but they have taken points from Chelsea in four of the last six meetings.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur meet under clear pressure. United have managed only five points from a manageable run, with defeats to Hull City and 10-man Manchester City damaging the mood. Tottenham, meanwhile, sit bottom after two goalless draws and three defeats, and Roberto De Zerbi’s side arrive with their costly new arrivals yet to settle. The stakes are obvious for both clubs.

The weekend’s headline fixture comes at Liverpool, where Manchester City play for the first time since being found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules. After a three-year investigation, the verdict has inevitably shifted attention onto Enzo Maresca and his players, even if they had no part in the issue. City have won all five league games under Maresca, but this is a different test entirely.

Liverpool have every reason to make the occasion felt. They have twice been runners-up to City title teams since 2009 and remain one of the most persistent challengers of the last decade. With the atmosphere set to be intense, this could become one of the defining matches of the round.
