Why Arsenal Are Targeting Players Who Can Shift the Level
Arsenal’s recruitment now aims at players who can change the dial and raise the team’s level.
Arsenal’s summer work reflects a clear idea: if the club wants to become the “best club in the world,” it must keep adding players who can “change the dial.” That phrase, used by chief executive Richard Garlick, sits at the heart of the Gunners’ recruitment strategy as Mikel Arteta and the owners continue to push the team forward.
It also helps explain Arsenal’s interest in Vinícius Júnior before he signed a new contract with Real Madrid, and the scale of their spending since the start of last summer’s transfer window. The club has committed around $482 million (£353 million) on 11 signings in that period.
“It’s certainly the ambition of the club and the owners to be the best club in the world,” Arteta told Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal beginning their title defense at home to Coventry City.
“In order to do that, you need the best facilities, the best stadium, the best supporters, and you need the best squad and the best players in the world. Those are the ones that win you football matches and the ones that can be decisive when it matters.
“That’s what we try to build with the actual players that we have, and with the players that we want to sign to make the difference for Arsenal.”
Garlick’s point is that Arsenal are beyond the stage of simply filling gaps. He said the club now need players who can “change the dial” and ultimately “take Arsenal forward” in ways that not every current member of the squad can.
The need is rooted in last season’s evidence. Arsenal reached the Champions League final, but were completely dominated by Paris Saint-Germain in that match, with the penalty shootout detail masking how uneven the contest was.
Arsenal arguably had the best midfield in the Premier League last season. Even so, the heavy physical load on Declan Rice has not gone unnoticed, and the Gunners still made Bruno Guimarães the second most expensive player in the club’s history heading into the new campaign.
Garlick also suggested the club’s recruiting standard has changed with their position in the game. When Arteta arrived just before Christmas in 2019, Arsenal were 10th in the Premier League and short on established starters. After two eighth-place finishes, they have since moved steadily upward and never gone backwards.
Now, after that climb back to the top, Arsenal believe the pool of players who can genuinely improve them has become smaller. “In the past we’ve looked at players that maybe helped build out the squad or get us to a certain level, but now we’re competing right at the top level, and we do need to bring in players that are going to change the dial,” Garlick said.

Opening weekend produced statement wins, setbacks and early clues about where the season may head.
The Premier League has wasted little time in reminding everyone why pre-season certainty rarely survives opening weekend.
A composed Friday night start was followed by a string of heavy results and eye-catching shifts across Saturday and Sunday. For a division long billed as one of the most unpredictable in years, the first round of fixtures offered exactly that, forcing plenty of early assumptions into revision.
Arsenal made the clearest statement. Their 3-0 win over Coventry City was controlled, calm and entirely in keeping with a team defending a title. Coventry, in their first top-flight match in 25 years, were worn down gradually and given little encouragement. With the additions made this summer and an already deep squad, the champions look well placed to make another serious run at the top.
Aston Villa, by contrast, left the south coast with real concerns. Their defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion was severe, with the game effectively gone at 4-0 inside 31 minutes and João Gomes later sent off before half-time. Unai Emery has repeatedly found solutions in the past, but the scale of change around the squad means there is now a bedding-in process to manage.
Newcastle United also left their opener with more than frustration. A late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty denied them victory against Liverpool, yet Matthias Jassle’s influence was already visible. There is a clearer identity to their play, and the vertical approach looks suited to a team and support base that should respond to it.
Brentford, meanwhile, may have unearthed a major success in Mamadou Sangaré. The midfielder impressed in the 3-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, and the praise from teammates has been immediate. Caoimhín Kelleher called him “superb,” while Keane Lewis-Potter described him as a “joy to play with.”
Among the promoted sides, Hull City and Ipswich Town both delivered encouraging responses after Coventry’s rough start. Hull beat Manchester United 2-0, while Ipswich edged Sunderland 2-1 late on. Neither club is under any illusion about the task ahead, but both showed enough to suggest they can compete.
At the other end of the conversation, Sunderland’s opening defeat will sharpen questions about a second-season hangover, while Arsenal’s brightest argument may already be individual acclaim. Martin Ødegaard is back, baby!

Martinelli opens the door as Arteta’s hard line takes hold
Martinelli is now said to be open to leaving Arsenal after Arteta’s firm early-season stance.
Gabriel Martinelli has moved closer to an Arsenal exit after becoming the latest player to clash with Mikel Arteta’s uncompromising approach to squad management.
Reports now suggest the Brazil international is “open” to leaving the Premier League champions, after Arteta made clear where he believes the winger stands in the pecking order this season. The Arsenal manager has shown little flexibility, leaving Martinelli out of the matchday squad for the first two games of the new campaign while the player has continued training with the first team.
Dialogue between the pair has reportedly been limited, but the message from the club remains plain: Martinelli’s future is likely elsewhere. That marks a change in stance for the 25-year-old, who had previously resisted interest from Turkish champions Galatasaray. At that stage, he was said to be prioritising a move to one of Europe’s leading clubs if his prospects in north London disappeared.
His omission from Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry City appears to have sharpened the situation further. The Athletic reported that Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal have now entered the picture and that Martinelli is “open to the possibility.” Arsenal are also understood to be prepared to do business for about $81.8 million (£60 million). Fabrizio Romano later added that “official club-to-club contact” has already been made.
Martinelli would not be the first high-profile Arsenal player to fall out of favour under Arteta. The manager’s tenure has been marked by the departures of Mesut Özil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Emi Martínez, Nicolas Pépé, Bernd Leno, Mattéo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsdale, among others.
Arsenal have often accepted those exits despite financial damage, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s $47.2 million move to Liverpool in 2017 still their record sale. Martinelli could surpass that figure if a transfer is completed.
The club have already invested more than $260 million on four first-team arrivals this summer, and Arteta and chief executive Richard Garlick have said Arsenal will only pursue players who can “change the dial.” As Arteta put it: “I think for the margins to improve, there are very few players in the market that are available to do that and bring that to the club,”

Arsenal’s Yildiz Interest Meets a Firm Juventus Stance
Spalletti says Yildiz can stay, as Arsenal weigh an upgrade before the window closes.
Juventus have sent a clear message over Kenan Yıldız, with Luciano Spalletti insisting that Arsenal, or anyone else, can bid as much as they like without changing the club’s position this season.
The Arsenal pursuit comes after the club had also monitored Vinícius Júnior, while interest has been linked with Bradley Barcola and Morgan Rogers, who instead chose Chelsea. With the summer window closing in just nine days, Arsenal are still searching for a player who can improve a squad built around existing title winners and keep them moving towards a Premier League dynasty and Champions League success.
Spalletti made his view plain when speaking to reporters in Italy.
“I experience it calmly because the player is Yıldız. From my point of view, it’s simple, they can offer whatever they want,” Spalletti told reporters in Italy.
“I want to be able to field Yıldız this season.”
Yıldız, still only 21, has become Juventus’ leading name over the past two seasons. The German-born winger left Bayern Munich in 2022 after a decade in their academy, joining Turin at 17 before establishing himself as a starter two years later.
Spalletti also stressed that the forward is not pushing to leave and that discussions around his future can be handled calmly.
“Yıldız is a guy who is perfect to have mature conversations with. And consequently, he knows very well that he shouldn’t rush anything, that he shouldn’t speed anything up. His future is already important at Juventus,” the manager explained.
“It’s not important because someone offers €100 million [$116.8 million, £85.6 million] or because there is a club that has the financial power to spend at this moment. He is already at the club that offers €100 million for him. So, we are all very calm.”
For Arsenal, the task is straightforward but difficult: find an upgrade on Martinelli before time runs out, and do so only if the Brazilian leaves.
