The situation traces back to tension between player and manager at Real Madrid. Alonso, who became Chelsea’s new manager following the departure of Liam Rosenior, had required Vinicius Jr to re-earn his starting place on the left wing and benched him for matches he would normally start.
The disagreement peaked in October during Real Madrid’s 2–1 victory over Barcelona. Alonso substituted Vinicius Jr in the 72nd minute and the player reacted by storming down the tunnel while teammates were still on the pitch. Vinicius Jr later publicly apologized to the club, the fans and his teammates, but left out his manager.
After the incident, reports emerged that the No. 7 would refuse to sign a new contract while Alonso remained in charge. When the former Bayer Leverkusen boss lost his job in January, Vinicius Jr was one of the only players not to send him well wishes on social media, underscoring the depth of the breakdown between the two.
The transfer picture has been complicated by those events. Chelsea had previously expressed interest in the Brazil international but, according to MARCA, that interest no longer exists under Alonso’s management. Clubs across Europe are believed to monitor Vinicius Jr’s situation, yet the Blues appear not to be among potential suitors presently.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has publicly signalled a desire to retain Vinicius Jr. “There’s time,” he said when asked about renewing his superstar in May. “I’d love for him to stay forever. MacPhee’s work at Aston Villa made the club one of the most dangerous set-piece sides in Europe. His methods were described as innovative, creative and lethal, giving Unai Emery’s attack an added threat from dead-ball situations.
The numbers support that reputation. Villa scored 29 set-piece goals last season, the joint-most in Europe’s top-five leagues alongside Arsenal. Chelsea, by comparison, scored 21.
