How the last five Arsenal v Man City meetings unfolded, 2024–26

A concise look at the last five Arsenal v Man City matches, key moments and outcomes, 2024–26.

The Arsenal versus Man City fixtures across 2024 to 2026 have alternated between tight contests, statement victories and a cup final. The rivalry no longer reads as master and apprentice. Mikel Arteta has guided Arsenal to higher levels and a first league title in 22 years is within touching distance, with anything but defeat on Sunday strengthening the Gunners’ hopes despite recent wobbles.

Two years ago Arsenal travelled to the Etihad at the end of March in a match that proved a stalemate. Liverpool remained in the title race, and Arsenal opted to play for a point, focusing on containment. It was a game of very few chances and the visitors failed to make the most of late counterattacking moments. That draw proved only a brief blemish; Arsenal’s subsequent defeat to Aston Villa ultimately handed City the title.

An early-season Etihad meeting left City compromised after Ballon d’Or winner Rodri suffered an ACL tear. The match itself opened with Erling Haaland making the most of excellent work from Savinho. Riccardo Calafiori produced a stunning equaliser before Gabriel powered Arsenal in front from a corner. Leandro Trossard’s controversial second yellow made Arsenal’s task harsher, yet a resilient defence kept City at bay until John Stones crashed home a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point for the hosts.

Arsenal’s emphatic response came in February 2025, a 5–1 victory in which Hale End prospects made defining contributions. Myles Lewis-Skelly struck a third and even stole Haaland’s celebration, and Ethan Nwaneri provided the finishing touch with a sumptuous left-footed effort.

Another league meeting produced a gritty 1–1 draw. Tijjani Reijnders made an immediate impact at the Emirates, setting up Haaland, and Arsenal only rescued a point late when Gabriel Martinelli lobbed Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 93rd minute.

The most recent encounter was the Carabao Cup final, a day Arsenal had targeted after a two-legged win over Chelsea. James Trafford made early saves, City grew into the game and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s error opened the scoring. Nico O’Reilly’s quick brace settled the final and secured City their fifth Carabao Cup of the Guardiola era.

Arsenal dressing room left frustrated after Brighton defeat

Arsenal’s first defeat of the season left Bruno Guimarães describing a dressing room full of complaints.

Arsenal’s first defeat of the season brought a bleak assessment from inside the dressing room after Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. Bruno Guimarães said the reaction among the players was immediate, with the standard of the performance falling well below what was expected.

“In the first throw, you could sense it, it was so clear,” Arteta lamented, whispering through his postmatch press conference with a thinly veiled sense of fury. The mood was not much brighter in the locker room around the corner.

Guimarães described the match as one to move past, but not before stressing how badly Arsenal had fallen short. “I think today is a day to forget,” he said after his first Premier League start for the club. “Everything we tried didn’t work. Credit to them [Brighton] as well but we can’t accept this here.

“I think in the changing room, everyone was complaining about ourselves, about the level we played today. Like I said, it’s not acceptable. A very bad day in the office.”

Arteta viewed the defeat as a failure to meet the demands of the game. Brighton’s pressing and direct play repeatedly forced Arsenal into errors, and the Arsenal manager said his side had not matched the basics required in the Premier League.

“Brighton were another gear up from us,” Arteta fumed. “We were extremely poor technically and not respecting the game. And from our side there were certain basics that you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League, that we were very far from.”

He added: “In the first duel, the second ball, that put the game, especially how direct they were, in a really difficult place for us,” Arteta added. “On top of that, when we did regain the ball, especially in our own half, the amount of technical errors that we did and we didn’t respect any principle of play that you have to get out of those man-to-man situations.”

Guimarães was among the most disappointing performers in red, especially given the expectations behind his summer move. Recognising his part in the collapse, he then issued a message of apology to the Arsenal fanbase and promised better days ahead.

Arteta Admits Arsenal Were Outmatched From the First Throw-in at Brighton

Arteta admitted Arsenal were second best from the start as Brighton dominated them in a 3-0 defeat.

Mikel Arteta did not hide his frustration after Arsenal were overwhelmed at Brighton, admitting that his side were second best almost immediately in a defeat that exposed a clear gap in intensity.

Brighton’s 3-0 victory, delivered on the club’s 125th anniversary, was fully deserved and became Arsenal’s heaviest loss in more than three years. Although the opening goal did not arrive until the 31st minute, the contest had already tilted decisively in Brighton’s favour long before that. Their pressing from the first moments left Arsenal struggling to cope, and the visitors never recovered.

“In the first throw, you could sense it, it was so clear,” Arteta fumed, his voice barely raised above a furious whisper as he scowled through his postmatch media duties. “We put ourselves in trouble one time, two times, three times, and we need to get out of that much quicker. And that’s one of the biggest lessons that we have to take from the game.”

Arsenal were warned by Brighton’s recent form without the ball, and Arteta acknowledged that the message had been discussed beforehand. “The first thing that we had discussed, it was about the first pass,” Arteta confirmed. “If you don’t get out of that first pass as winners, it will be extremely difficult to dominate the game, and you don’t have any probability of winning the game.

“We knew that, but that’s again, credit to them for what they’ve done, because they overcame us, and they had another edge than we did, and that’s something that, at this level, it’s extremely important to respect and to understand before anything else.”

He also accepted that Brighton were stronger in the decisive duels. Arteta said Brighton “had another bite.” “There was a lot of moments when the ball is 50-50, and it changes hands, and most of the time it was for them.”

Asked whether he had considered a halftime change, Arteta admitted the thought was there but said he chose against it. “I was,” Arteta admitted after a moment of reflection, “but I would believe it wasn’t the right moment to do that with the things that we wanted to change for the second half.”

Tottenham’s home record under scrutiny after latest defeat as Arsenal’s day also sours

Tottenham’s home numbers worsen after Villa, while Arsenal’s perfect start ends with a 3-0 loss.

Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season took another turn on Saturday after defeat to Aston Villa left them with an unwanted statistic attached to their name.

According to Opta, Tottenham have now lost 50 of their 141 Premier League matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since it opened in April 2019. That is the same number of league defeats Arsenal have suffered at the Emirates Stadium across 382 top-flight matches since their move from Highbury in July 2006.

The numbers underline how costly home form has become for Tottenham. Across all competitions, they have won only five of their last 36 matches on home soil, and only two of those victories have come under De Zerbi’s guidance.

That figure will not have been lost on Arsenal supporters, but any satisfaction was brief. Just hours later, the reigning Premier League champions suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton & Hove Albion produced a dominant display to beat the Gunners 3-0, and their fans made their feelings known with the chant, “Are you Tottenham in disguise?”

Arsenal, who had begun the season in perfect form, were repeatedly opened up by Brighton’s pressing and made to look unusually vulnerable. Their defence, which had conceded only once in the Premier League before the trip to the south coast, was breached three times as the visitors endured one of their weakest performances in recent years.

What had looked like a team growing increasingly secure in the early weeks of the campaign ended with Arsenal heading back to the capital having suffered a setback that matched the frustration Tottenham were already facing.
