Five Premier League Gameweeks That Could Define the Title Race

Five gameweeks loom large for the title: derbies, Etihad tests and tricky away trips could decide the fate.

Arsenal began the season as an apparent juggernaut, but recent draws have invited rivals back into the title conversation. The coming weeks contain a cluster of fixtures that could sway the destination of the crown.

The next matchday provides a stark test: Arsenal travel into a north London derby against Spurs with Igor Tudor overseeing his first game after Thomas Frank’s dismissal. With the Lilywhites genuinely fighting relegation, they will be highly motivated to move further clear of the drop zone and dent the title bid of their neighbours at the same time.

Manchester City face a different examination of strength. They welcome a fatigued Newcastle United side to the Etihad after the Magpies returned from a lengthy trip to Qarabağ, where a 6–1 victory should have energised them. City lost at St James’s Park earlier in the season but prevailed over Newcastle in both legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final. Still, Pep Guardiola’s side have proven an inconsistent beast and must be at their best.

Villa remain on the fringes of the race and will aim to take advantage of any slips. They host Leeds United this weekend and later travel to Wolves in Gameweek 28, a match in which Unai Emery’s side should achieve what the Spaniard’s former club could not, despite Arsenal’s collapse at Molineux earlier in the campaign. Wolves sit at the foot of the table on just 10 points.

Gameweek 28 also delivers another London derby for Arsenal, this time against Chelsea at the Emirates. They have beaten the Blues twice already in 2026, in the Carabao Cup. Liam Rosenior’s resurgent Chelsea will look to a more attack-minded approach than in their recent 1–0 defeat at Arsenal, which could expose an increasingly shaky Gunners backline.

Looking further ahead, Gameweek 33 is pivotal. Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City will carry enormous weight. City will have home advantage for what will be their third meeting of the season—the Carabao Cup final is contested before this Etihad clash—and Guardiola will hope for a better outcome than in the first duel between the sides. Gabriel Martinelli’s stoppage-time equaliser in the north London meeting was the Brazilian’s only league goal of the season so far and could prove crucial as the run-in unfolds.

There remain clear opportunities for all contenders over the remaining fixtures; derbies, Etihad tests and tricky away trips could decide the title.

Arteta’s Konsa concern eases Arsenal wait ahead of Hull City

Arteta has confirmed Ezri Konsa had issues against Slavia Prague, with tests due before Hull City.

Mikel Arteta has admitted Ezri Konsa is carrying an issue after Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Slavia Prague, leaving the defender’s availability in doubt ahead of the meeting with Hull City on Saturday.

The Arsenal manager did not offer a reassuring update after the final whistle, saying the summer signing was withdrawn because of a problem and because of the heavy load he has been asked to manage in recent weeks.

“He is obviously playing a lot. He’s played so many games in the last few weeks,” Arteta said of Konsa.

“He had some issues and we decided to take him off.”

Konsa is now set to undergo further checks before Arsenal face Hull City, and any sign of a genuine injury would likely lead to a cautious approach from Arteta. With the November international break approaching, the club may have some breathing space if recovery is required.

The defender has already passed the 1,000-minute mark in all competitions during his debut Arsenal campaign, having featured in all but two of the team’s matches in 2026-27. Those two absences came in August, before his move from Aston Villa was completed.

His impact has been immediate, with Konsa emerging as Arsenal’s strongest summer addition and one of the standout new arrivals in the Premier League. He has filled the role left by William Saliba without disrupting the team’s rhythm.

If Arsenal do need to manage his minutes, Mosquera is available to step in alongside Gabriel, while Saliba is also back in contention after missing the start of the season with a back injury. The French defender travelled to Czechia and was an unused substitute, though a recall straight into the XI may be considered too soon.

Declan Rice also remains central to the discussion around Arsenal’s workload. He again influenced the win in midweek, but his minutes have been watched closely after a demanding run that included last season, the 2026 World Cup and the current campaign.

Arteta brushed aside concerns when asked about Rice completing the full 90 minutes. “The game required it, and he did,” he said. “He was as well rested against Fleetwood so he had a very good week to recover before Liverpool.

“It’s his second game in a week and not the fifth one. We expect our players to be able to do that and I think he had some very good moments throughout the game.”

October Premier League award nominees announced

Premier League October award nominees include standout performers and managers across the division.

The Premier League has named the contenders for its October 2026 Player and Manager of the Month awards, with eight players and six managers included on the respective shortlists.

Bournemouth forward Evanilson enjoyed a productive month, finishing October with four goals and one assist from four appearances as his team beat Sunderland, Manchester United and Leeds United after a slow opening to the season.

Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson also reached four goals in the month. The former Chelsea player scored twice in the 2-1 win over Manchester City and also found the net in draws against Brentford and Fulham.

Arsenal are represented by Ezri Konsa and Declan Rice after a perfect month. Konsa impressed in defence while William Saliba was absent, keeping two clean sheets in three outings and scoring his first goal for the club. Rice contributed two important assists at the other end.

Jack Rudoni’s form has helped Coventry City. The newly promoted side took two wins from four matches in October, with Rudoni scoring three times as they moved further away from the relegation zone.

Tottenham Hotspur also had an unbeaten month, and Jan Paul van Hecke played a key role in wins over Coventry, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. No player attempted or completed more passes than the Dutch defender last month.

Brighton have two nominees in Luka Vušković and Bart Verbruggen. Three clean sheets in four matches brought recognition for the Seagulls’ defence.

On the managerial shortlist, Chelsea scored more goals than any other team in October with nine, while Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta guided his side to the top of the table. Roberto De Zerbi, Unai Emery, Fabian Hürzeler and Marco Rose complete the list after strong runs during the month.

Barcola highlights Liverpool’s control problem after Arsenal defeat

Barcola says Liverpool need more control after Arsenal and the numbers partly support him.

Published

on

Bradley Barcola’s reaction to Liverpool’s loss to Arsenal has put a clear focus on the next stage of Andoni Iraola’s rebuild. The forward said the team need greater control and more composure in matches of this kind, especially when they are drawn into direct play rather than keeping the ball on the ground.

That message comes against a generally positive backdrop. Liverpool have already moved past Atlético Madrid, LASK and Villarreal with different levels of comfort, and they remain on course for a top-eight finish for the third straight season. That would spare them two extra fixtures in the new year.

Results have not been the major issue in Iraola’s opening months. Arne Slot’s successor has suffered only two defeats in all competitions, and Liverpool’s European form has been matched by a Carabao Cup quarterfinal place and fifth position in the Premier League. Even so, the rare home defeat to Arsenal showed that the side are still evolving.

Liverpool had their strongest moments after falling behind, with their work without the ball making life difficult for the champions. They controlled territory for long stretches and recorded 30 touches in Arsenal’s box in the first half, yet they did not manage a shot on target before the interval. Alexis Mac Allister also had a chance to level the game before half-time.

After the break, Mikel Arteta’s adjustments helped Arsenal settle, and Liverpool’s momentum faded. Barcola struggled to make repeated one-on-one progress and at times did not even look to take Jurrïen Timber on.

The numbers back up part of his complaint. Liverpool completed just 11 long passes, with a success rate of 25%, and only 11% of their crosses found a team-mate. Their average possession share ranks seventh in the Premier League, per Opta, while they have also produced 17 through balls, the joint-10th-highest total.

Barcola’s own game is built around running in behind, and he is still waiting for his first Premier League goal. Signed for huge money as Liverpool’s third-most expensive arrival ever, he was not universally viewed as a direct Mohamed Salah replacement because he prefers to play on the left. Salah left Anfield at the end of last season and later joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer, but Barcola said he feels no pressure from that departure: “Regarding Mo Salah, he’s a legend here. A huge one. He’s done big things here, and for that I have an enormous respect for him. But it’s not pressure for me at all.
