Semenyo declined moves last summer to potential suitors that included Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United and instead signed a new five-year deal with Bournemouth. The club made adding a release clause a central element of that renewal.
Bournemouth general manager Tim Bezbatchenko has publicly acknowledged the possibility of Semenyo leaving, saying “who are we to say, ‘No, you can‘t go, you can‘t fulfil your dream,’” as the forward contemplates a step up.
The player is 25 years old and has demonstrated his versatility by operating on either flank and through the middle. He also provided three assists in the opening seven games of the Premier League campaign, though his form has cooled recently as Bournemouth slipped to ninth in the table after a couple of bad results.
Clubs weighing a January approach must consider the premium that often applies in midseason windows. The release clause offers certainty of price, but the timing and short window create pressure for buyers and sellers alike. Bournemouth will also need time to identify and sign a replacement, a factor reflected in the clause’s undisclosed trigger date.
There is also a longer-term option built into the contract. If a January move does not materialise, the clause reappears in the summer of 2026 for a smaller amount, offering potential buyers an incentive to wait.
Given the sustained interest shown last summer and the mechanics of the deal, a January exit is plausible, though clubs may decide to delay until a potential cheaper option becomes available in 2026. Either way, Semenyo’s contract structure has made him one of the most watched forwards as the window approaches.
