Arne Slot Urges Patience as Florian Wirtz Adapts, Citing Kevin De Bruyne Example

Slot urges patience for Florian Wirtz, pointing to Kevin De Bruyne’s early career difficulties. Soon.

Arne Slot has publicly defended Florian Wirtz amid calls for change after Liverpool endured a run of three successive defeats before the international break. The manager insisted it is premature to judge the 22-year-old following a summer move that carried a reported fee of £116 million ($155.6 million).

Slot pointed to the practical signs of adjustment rather than headline numbers. “If you’ve been brought in for so much money, people look mainly at goals and assists, but I can tell you he could be on six or seven assists already,” Slot argued to Sky Sports . “He’s been a bit unlucky with the finishing when he’s given his teammates chances but, in general for a 22-year-old, it’s quite normal that you have to adjust to going to another country let alone going to the Premier League.”

He invoked Kevin De Bruyne’s early difficulties in England as context. “Maybe I’m now underestimating the best midfielder who has ever played in the Premier League, Kevin De Bruyne, he was 21 or 22 when he went to Chelsea [and struggled],” Slot noted. “Give him a bit of time, I would say. I’m definitely going to give him a bit of time and in the meantime, he’s been unlucky.”

Slot made clear his selection intentions. “He has to play and he’s played a lot,” the Dutch boss explained. “Because he’s come from a different league and played so many games, it’s quite normal that once in a while he needs a game where he doesn’t play like I’ve done with Mo Salah and many others.

“To get the best out of him, it’s of course necessary for him to play and that’s what he did and what he’s going to do in the upcoming weeks.”

The context is visible in the numbers. In 2025–26 Wirtz, aged 22, has made 10 appearances for Liverpool, totalling 734 minutes, with 0 goals, 1 assist and 2 yellow cards. By comparison, Kevin De Bruyne at Chelsea in 2013–14, aged 22, recorded 9 appearances, 426 minutes, 0 goals, 1 assist and 1 yellow card.

Jamie Carragher was among those who suggested Wirtz might be removed from the starting lineup, while other voices have urged a measured appraisal of his adaptation to a new country, team and system. Virgil van Dijk offered a personal perspective on settling after a big transfer. “The main thing is when new players are coming in, as when I came in for a lot of money, is that you feel welcomed, you feel calm, your home situation is sorted, your family is happy,” the Dutch defender outlined. “If that is good, then you’ll be able to excel. ]

Araujo future discussion remains premature despite strong Liverpool loan spell

Araújo is thriving at Liverpool, but his agent says it is still too early to discuss a permanent move.

Edoardo Crnjar, the owner of the Excellence Sport agency, has urged caution over any talk of a permanent switch to Liverpool for Ronald Araújo, even while expressing clear satisfaction with the defender’s impact this season.

Araújo, who is on loan from Barcelona, has been one of only three players to feature in all 13 Liverpool matches so far. He has also contributed two goals and proved valuable both at centre back and at right back, which has only intensified speculation that Liverpool could seek to turn the loan into a permanent deal.

Crnjar, however, insisted that any decision remains distant. “Ronald is performing well, and we are very pleased with his contributions,” the agent told winwin . “However, it is still far too early to discuss his future at this stage.

“He feels very good; he is happy playing for Liverpool and pleased to be helping the club and his teammates—just as he has already expressed himself.”

Araújo has already made his own position clear. Earlier this month, he said it is “still early” to think about his long-term future, although he and his family are “very happy” with life in England.

His contract at Barcelona runs until 2031, but Liverpool’s route to a permanent move is straightforward in financial terms. Barcelona inserted a buy-option clause into the deal, believed to be worth €55 million ($61.4 million), so the fee is already known if Liverpool decide to act.

There remains the possibility of Liverpool attempting to renegotiate when the loan ends next summer, in the same way Barcelona approached Marcus Rashford’s future with Manchester United. Even so, the level of praise Araújo has received may make a discount difficult to secure.

Julian Ward, Liverpool’s new sporting director, will ultimately judge whether the 27-year-old is worth the investment. Araújo’s versatility has already been a major asset, although he may not be viewed as a first-choice starter when everyone is fit.

Ronald Araujo’s Liverpool revival has changed the picture completely

Ronald Araújo has turned an uncertain Liverpool loan into one of the season’s standout stories so far.

Liverpool have not always found loan signings easy to trust, which is why the reaction to Ronald Araújo’s arrival in August was measured rather than enthusiastic.

The defender joined on a season-long deal with an option to buy, arriving from Barcelona as club captain but with only 11 La Liga starts in 2025-26 behind him. Once widely regarded as one of the finest defenders in Spanish soccer, his reputation had been clouded by concerns over rash decisions, positional errors and injuries. Many saw the move as a hurried attempt to cover defensive gaps.

Less than three months later, the picture looks very different. Araújo has emerged as a strong candidate for Liverpool’s player of the season so far, having adapted quickly to both right back and central defense. He has started six of the club’s eight Premier League matches and has been praised for his ferocity and commitment.

That edge has made him an immediate favourite with supporters. His style has been described as pure Barclays defending, and social media has responded in kind to “Big Ron”. In Sunday’s 2-0 win over Brighton, he was named Player of the Match after producing a sliding header tackle inside his own box to protect the clean sheet. He won all five of his duels, made 11 defensive contributions and reached 36.3 km/h, reportedly the fastest speed in the Premier League this season.

His impact has not been limited to defending. Araújo already has two Champions League goals and one assist, with the standout moment a backheel for Dominik Szoboszlai in the comeback win over Atlético Madrid. He also made a long pressing run in that match, a sequence that underlined how quickly he has become part of the team’s identity.

The move has also provided a fresh start after his leave of absence from Barcelona for mental health reasons. Jamie Carragher said: “The fans have absolutely fallen in love with him straight away,” and added: “Sometimes you have players like that. They’ve come, they’ve got a bit of a backstory. At Barcelona maybe they were happy to see him go, but the Liverpool supporters opened their arms and gave him a big cuddle, and he seems to be enjoying it.”

Liverpool hold a £47 million option to buy him at the end of the season, though his age means the decision will not be straightforward. Araújo is enjoying the moment for now, but his resurgence has already given both clubs plenty to consider.

Arsenal face major selection doubts before Liverpool trip

Arsenal’s injury list is growing before Liverpool, with Rice, Saka, Saliba and others in doubt.

Mikel Arteta has been left juggling a growing list of fitness worries ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool, with Declan Rice among those under an injury cloud. The midfielder was forced off against Everton last weekend after, in Arteta’s words, he finished with “a problem”, leaving his availability for Sunday’s clash at Anfield uncertain.

Rice is not the only concern. Arteta admitted after Arsenal’s Carabao Cup exit that “Riccardo was out, Noni was out with an ankle and Declan Rice finished with a problem the other day,” underscoring the scale of the issue facing his side.

Some absences, though, are already clearer. Bukayo Saka has joined William Saliba on the list of long-term injuries after damaging his left quad in the Champions League draw with Bayern Munich. Saka is expected to miss at least six weeks and will not be back before the start of December at the earliest.

Saliba’s situation remains less defined. The defender has not played this season since surgery on a persistent back problem that became too much for him at this summer’s World Cup. Arteta has described the signs in his recovery as “very, very positive”, but he has not offered a return date, with the end of November mentioned only as a loose target.

There is also uncertainty around Christos Tzolis. The summer signing picked up a thigh problem while on international duty with Greece in the fall and was ruled out for around three weeks. He may yet have a role on Sunday, but his status remains unresolved.

Elsewhere, Max Dowman will not be able to win Arteta over through the FA, although Arsenal could still try to secure the teenager’s availability by appealing his red card against Fleetwood. The 16-year-old was dismissed for kicking out at Harrison Neal, with the force described as minimal but still enough for a straight red. With no VAR at this stage of the Carabao Cup, Michael Salisbury’s on-field call stood at the time. Dowman was found guilty of violent conduct, which the FA Handbook describes as “when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.”
