Opta’s early 2026/27 table sees Arsenal on top after opening weekend

Opta’s early table has Arsenal first, City second and United sliding after a shock opening defeat.

The first weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season has already prompted the familiar rush to judge the race, and Arsenal’s opening win has placed them at the head of Opta’s latest projection.

Arsenal began the campaign as they ended the last one, with a comfortable victory, and the supercomputer now expects them to finish first on 74.80 points. That gives the Gunners a 45.18% chance of retaining the title, with Opta also suggesting they could become champions for the first time in 92 years. Manchester City are forecast to stay close but still finish second on 68.44 points, while Liverpool complete the top three on 61.42.

Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham in Xabi Alonso’s first league match in charge has lifted them into fourth place in the model, on 58.48 points. Manchester United, after their shock defeat to Hull City, have slipped to fifth on 55.34 points. Brighton & Hove Albion are also sitting strongly in sixth, just behind United on 55.21.

Opta’s picture for Champions League qualification continues beyond that, with Newcastle, Aston Villa, Brentford and Everton occupying the next places in the top 10. The model gives five of the league’s ‘Big Six’ a place in the top five, reflecting the expectation that the battle for the 2027-28 Champions League spots will again be tight.

At the other end of the table, the supercomputer sees Tottenham Hotspur avoiding another collapse by finishing 12th, despite their opening-day loss to Brentford. Crystal Palace are projected 14th, while newly-promoted Ipswich Town are 15th and Nottingham Forest 16th. Coventry City, Hull City, Fulham and Sunderland are forecast to occupy the relegation places, with Hull’s opening win over Manchester United not enough to alter their long-term outlook.

It is, as ever, only one weekend in. But Opta’s early read is clear: Arsenal lead the way, City remain close, and the pack behind them is already beginning to take shape.

Matchday One Delivers Goals, Stumbles and Early Questions Across the Premier League

A lively opening round brought shocks, strong debuts and early pressure across the Premier League.

The Premier League opened its 2026/27 season with a first weekend that answered Richard Masters’ pre-season confidence with substance. The chief executive had promised supporters a strong competition, and the initial 10 fixtures supplied plenty of evidence for that claim, from sharp attacking spells to a series of results that unsettled several established sides.

Unai Emery was left to reflect on a damaging defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, saying Aston Villa “lost our balance emotionally” after falling behind. His own pre-match handling of Ollie Watkins’ absence drew attention too, when he declined to elaborate beyond a single word: “Silence.”

At Tottenham Hotspur, the performance at the Gtech Community Stadium was so flat that it looked more like a short-lived interim spell than the work of Roberto De Zerbi. The scale of the disappointment was heightened by the $300 million transfer spend that had preceded it.

Michael Carrick’s team were also left exposed in a loss to newly promoted opposition, with transition problems, attacking bluntness and peculiar set-piece incidents all undermining the display. Coventry City, meanwhile, found themselves outclassed in a clash of league champions and struggled to trouble Arsenal in any meaningful way.

Elsewhere, Sunderland stayed level with Ipswich for much of the contest at Portman Road, but the hosts carried the greater threat for long periods. One exceptional free kick from Nilson Angulo was not enough to disguise a performance that lacked much else.

Oliver Glasner’s Nottingham Forest debut ended in a late defeat, prompting him to stress: “It is a process,” and “It’s pretty clear that my staff and I can’t put our hands on the players’ shoulders and all of a sudden we play like Real Madrid in the 1970s.” Crystal Palace were left frustrated as chances went begging and off-field uncertainty lingered.

There were more positive debuts at Craven Cottage and the City Ground, while Bournemouth’s performance at the Etihad showed organisation even in a late collapse. Chelsea’s first outing under Xabi Alonso offered attacking fluency and defensive unease in equal measure. Liverpool were pushed hard by Newcastle United, and a stoppage-time penalty denied them victory after Lewis Hall’s late lapse.

Arsenal began their title defence with calm control, Everton edged a useful result over Crystal Palace, and Brighton produced the weekend’s most ruthless spell by overwhelming Aston Villa after taking the lead early.

Premier League’s quickest players for 2026/27, based on last season’s numbers

Premier League pace still matters, and these 2026/27 speed numbers highlight the league’s quickest.

Speed remains one of football’s most decisive weapons, whether it is a direct run through the middle, a winger breaking into space, or a defender racing back to recover possession. In an era of intricate systems and technical detail, raw pace still has a clear place at the top level.

Using Premier League data from the previous campaign, here are the 10 fastest players in the English top flight for the 2026/27 season. There is one important caveat: newly promoted Ipswich Town, Hull City and Coventry City are not included, because the EFL Championship does not centrally collect and publish this data in the same way. That means this list could yet be challenged by fresh arrivals this season.

Yankuba Minteh stands out for his ability to catch teams off guard, either by accelerating early in matches or by exploiting tired legs later on. The Brighton player is also currently injured, which limits his influence.

Daniel James has long been defined by acceleration, and Leeds United continue to benefit from a winger who can simply run past opponents and break open a defensive line.

Jeremie Frimpong gives Liverpool an aggressive running threat in both directions, able to make recovery sprints and then drive forward immediately afterward, provided fitness allows.

Erling Haaland may look low by reputation alone, but his actual top speed last season only placed him seventh among the players on this list, despite the explosive image he carries when charging at goal.

William Osula’s 2025/26 breakthrough at Newcastle United included seven Premier League goals, and his pace added another layer to a striker profile that already drew attention because of his frame.

Pedro Neto is less known for end product than relentless movement, yet he remains one of the quickest runners around. His future remains uncertain, with Chelsea valuing him at $135 million (£100 million) and Al Hilal plus Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs interested for 2026/27 and beyond.

Bryan Mbeumo, now at Manchester United, continues to pose problems for defenders once he gets moving, while Anthony Elanga showed his speed despite a difficult first league season with Newcastle United, including an eye-catching top pace in a December match against Chelsea.

Opta’s 2026-27 Premier League forecast puts Arsenal ahead

Opta’s latest forecast backs Arsenal to retain the Premier League title ahead of Friday’s opener.

Published

The 2026-27 Premier League campaign is almost under way, with Arsenal set to begin their title defence at home to newly promoted Coventry City on Friday.

With the opening fixture drawing nearer, Opta’s supercomputer has delivered its latest projection for how the table may finish next May. Arsenal remain the strongest favourites to retain the crown, sitting top of the predicted standings on 73.45 expected points and a 40.62% title chance.

Manchester City are projected to be Arsenal’s closest challengers. They are forecast to finish second on 67.01 expected points, with a 19.60% chance of lifting the trophy. Liverpool, in their first season under Andoni Iraola, are placed third on 61.49 expected points and a 9.16% title chance.

The numbers suggest a six-point gap between first and second, which would leave little room for a final-day scramble at the top. Instead, the forecast points toward a title battle that is limited to two teams.

Beyond that, the model expects Manchester United to finish fourth on 59.03 expected points in a full season under permanent manager Michael Carrick. Aston Villa are projected to edge Chelsea and claim fifth, while Chelsea are tipped to finish sixth and return to the Europa League. Newcastle are backed for seventh, with Tottenham eighth despite their record-breaking transfer plans.

Brighton and Bournemouth are forecast to occupy ninth and 10th respectively, leaving them in the mix for Conference League qualification if the available European places fall that way.

At the other end, Opta’s numbers leave all 20 clubs above the traditional 40-point safety line. Hull are predicted to finish bottom on 40.18 expected points, while Ipswich and Coventry are also placed in the relegation zone positions. The outlook suggests Everton, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are in the lower half, but with relegation odds below 20%.

The overall projection still leaves seven clubs with some risk of being involved in the fight against the drop.
