Arteta hints at Arsenal activity as Madrid issue firm Vinícius Júnior message

Mikel Arteta has again signalled that Arsenal expect an active end to the transfer window, while avoiding direct confirmation on Vinícius Júnior. The Arsenal manager described the club’s plans as “very ambitious” and made clear that movement is expected in the coming weeks.

“We are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team. That’s clear,” Arteta said, his earlier grin giving way to a more serious expression.

“We expect to have movements in the next three weeks obviously because we want to get better like anybody else. You can just see the transfer market and what our opponents are doing. We won’t sit still. We are very ambitious in where we want to go.”

Across in Madrid, José Mourinho took a far more direct approach. After Real Madrid’s draw with Fiorentina, he confirmed that Vinícius Júnior will return to the squad next week, along with Brahim Díaz and Bernardo Silva. That blunt update removed any immediate uncertainty around the forward’s short-term future.

The bigger issue, however, remains unresolved. Vinícius Júnior’s contract situation is still being viewed as a question of what he wants, not simply what he is paid. One figure has been put forward by the player and his camp, while Madrid have held firm with a lower one. A planned meeting is expected to address whether he wants to stay or is considering a move to the Premier League.

If he reaffirms his preference for Madrid, extension talks are expected to gather pace. If Arsenal’s interest is genuinely mutual and no agreement can be reached, a sale would become the likelier outcome. For now, all options remain open.

Arteta’s recruitment ambitions are not limited to that pursuit. Arsenal have also been linked with a major offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães, underlining the scale of their spending plans as they look to close the gaps at the top.

“The margins are very small and if you want to get better when the level is going to increase, we need to increase the competition internally,” Arteta said. “We need to make sure we identify the things we don’t have in the team to have bigger margins. That’s the way we have to think.

“I think we have even more responsibility and ambition than before. We know what is ahead. We know the qualities and the capacity that we have to compete with any other teams. We need to prove that we belong at this level now.”
