Danny Welbeck’s path back to Manchester United never materialised, even though the club were linked with him in both 2024 and 2025. Instead, the striker has ended up at Chelsea, closing the door on a return that once felt possible in theory but not in practice.

Welbeck’s career has taken a different turn since leaving Old Trafford in 2014. Injuries heavily disrupted his years at Arsenal, but the last two seasons have been the most productive of his career. He scored 10 Premier League goals in 2024-25 and followed that with 13 in 2025-26, form that has carried him towards his 36th birthday before the end of 2026.

According to The Athletic, United’s interest in signing a striker this summer did not revive the specific pursuit that had existed in the previous two years. The issue in 2025 was less about admiration and more about the details. What Manchester United were willing to offer and what Welbeck wanted were not aligned, with contract length the main sticking point. His Brighton deal was effectively secure until 2027 because of a built-in extension option, while only 12 months was understood to be available in Manchester.

That situation has now changed. Welbeck has signed a two-year deal with Chelsea, keeping him at the club until June 2028, when he will be five months short of 38.

There was obvious logic to the idea of Welbeck returning to United. Born in Manchester, he was identified by United scouts at the age of eight while playing for Fletcher Moss Rangers. His background, familiarity with the club and knowledge of the city made him a natural fit on paper.

But United’s direction is already clear. Benjamin Šeško is seen as the long-term No. 9 after a promising debut season in 2025-26, and Welbeck would have been a different kind of addition, offering experience, leadership and dependable output rather than a full-time role. At Chelsea, where João Pedro is the starting striker, the same idea applies: support, not constant selection.

Manchester United’s belief in Premier League success is not confined to one player or one speech. It runs through the dressing room, the manager and the club’s leadership, which makes the confidence around Old Trafford difficult to dismiss entirely.

Leny Yoro summed up the mood during the club’s pre-season tour, saying: “The mood is really good,” Yoro told assembled media during the club’s preseason tour. “We work really hard, and outside the pitch, we have a good vibe, good mood. So the target this season is to win every game, to be honest. For the team to be the best, for myself to do good games every time, to win trophies, and to be at the top.”

That sort of ambition would sound familiar after United’s strong second-half run last season, when they climbed to third and briefly sparked talk of a title challenge in 2025-26. Under Carrick across the full campaign, the club has not been shy about aiming high.

Carrick, usually careful with public declarations, still allowed himself a glimpse of the club’s scale. “From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United,” the former midfielder said.

“Carrying the responsibility of leading our special football club fills me with immense pride. Throughout the past five months, this group of players have shown they can reach the standards of resilience, togetherness and determination that we demand here.

“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honors again.”

Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes have also spoken in the same spirit, while Omar Berrada has publicly pointed to 2028 as the club’s target for a return to the top.

There is substance behind the optimism. Since Carrick returned in January, United have collected more points and scored more goals than any other side in the division across 17 games. Their attack was among the league’s most productive, boosted by summer investment in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško.

But the next step will ask more of them. Champions League football is back, the schedule is heavier, and the continuity that helped United last season may now be tested by the demands of rotation and deeper competition.

Manchester United’s 15-year-old JJ Gabriel has taken an important early step in his rise, featuring in the club’s preseason match against Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on Saturday.

Gabriel had already forced his way into the conversation by scoring 26 goals in 26 U-18 Premier League appearances, form that led Darren Fletcher to back him for inclusion with the senior squad during preseason. He was not involved when United opened the summer against Wrexham in Helsinki, and his name was then listed for the trip to Norway to face Rosenborg, where he remained an unused substitute. Even so, those call-ups marked a significant stage in his development.

The breakthrough came on Saturday when Gabriel was introduced for the final eight minutes of a match United won 2-1. At 15 years and 299 days, he became the youngest player ever to represent United, although the appearance was unofficial and will not count in the record books.

Despite the limited time on the pitch, Gabriel looked composed and secure in possession. The brief cameo reflected why he has been described by some as a generational talent, while also showing the natural signs of inexperience that come with his age. Patience, as ever, will be part of the process.

Gabriel will not turn 16 until October, yet he is already moving into territory no one at the club has reached before. No 15-year-old has ever played a competitive fixture for Manchester United, which means the opportunity remains for him to make history properly in the months ahead.

He was too young to feature in the Premier League last season, because competition rules meant he was still 14 when the campaign began. Even so, a competitive first-team appearance during 2026-27 cannot be ruled out.
