Manchester United may end up benefiting from Real Madrid’s sudden interest in Rodri, with the possible consequences for Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga potentially reshaping the market.

A move for Rodri would not automatically require Madrid to sell either midfielder, but the financial case would be strengthened if one of them were moved on. There is also the possibility that being pushed out of Madrid’s strongest XI could make Tchouaméni reconsider where his future lies.

The Daily Mail writes that Premier League clubs are “on alert” over Tchouaméni, while BBC Sport says Madrid are “willing to discuss” a deal.

United were understood to have made an enquiry about a transfer at the start of the summer, although progress has been limited by Tchouaméni’s wish to stay at the Bernabéu. He had reportedly reached an agreement to extend his contract until 2031, though that has only been reported and not confirmed, leaving his current stance unclear.

Even if Tchouaméni were to tell Real Madrid that he wants out, any deal would remain costly and could rise above $90 million. His annual salary is also estimated at just under the equivalent of $14 million, which would be another obstacle for interested clubs.

That sits against United’s recent approach in the market. The club backed away from more expensive moves for Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, instead chasing cheaper options such as Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Their wider search has also brought links to Tyler Adams, Mamadou Sangaré and Danilo, while the now cancelled Éderson move was attractive in part because of its lower price.

This is not a question of United lacking the means for Tchouaméni. It is whether the economics make sense alongside their other priorities. Carlos Baleba remains the only defensive midfield target with a similar price level, though his basic salary is estimated at under $1 million.

If Rodri’s arrival reduces Tchouaméni’s minutes, Camavinga’s position could become even more precarious. The Frenchman is already under pressure after a poor end to last season cost him his place at the World Cup.

Manchester United’s search for a midfielder is still alive, even after the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Those two additions have helped repair an area that was left badly exposed after the departures of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury, but there remains a clear need for a more destructive profile to bring balance to the group.

With four senior midfielders available, along with extra cover from Jack Fletcher and Tyler Fletcher, Michael Carrick should have enough to manage the 2026/27 season. Even so, United are not planning to shop at the top end of the market. After seeing Manchester City pay £116 million ($155 million) for Elliot Anderson and Tottenham Hotspur spend a combined £185 million ($246.5 million) on Matheus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, the Red Devils are expected to keep their business more measured.

The options under consideration are said to sit between £25 million and £51 million, with value playing a major role in the decision. Eduardo Camavinga is the most expensive of the group at around £51 million ($68 million), according to The Guardian. He would be an excellent signing in theory, given his age and quality, but there is an obvious complication if he would rather continue a Real Madrid career he had been trying to protect only months ago.

Sander Berge brings reliability and experience, but at 28 and priced at £40 million ($53 million), he is more of a short-term choice with limited resale potential. Tyler Adams is younger, at 27, and valued at £35 million ($46.5 million), with his high-energy style fitting the demands of Carrick’s side.

Mamadou Sangaré is viewed as an unpolished talent with strong ball-winning instincts, and reports place him at around £34 million ($45 million). His route to this point has been unusual, but his rise at Lens last season underlined his promise.

Danilo may offer the strongest value of all. At 25 and available for about £25 million ($33 million), he already has Premier League experience, and his spell at Nottingham Forest showed enough to suggest the price is manageable. Returning to England would still require proof, but on cost alone he stands out.

Radek Vítek has made clear that he wants to leave Manchester United permanently if the right opportunity comes along, with the goalkeeper targeting a route to regular starts.

United’s reshuffle in goal began last summer, when André Onana was moved on and Senne Lammens arrived. After eight clean sheets in his first season, the 24-year-old remains Michael Carrick’s preferred starter. Onana spent last season on loan with Trabzonspor and has already gone back to the Turkish side for another 12-month stint, while Altay Bayındır could also leave after three years of limited opportunities.

That situation had opened the door for a new deputy at Old Trafford this season, but United have not offered Vítek that role. His own desire for regular football means he would not have settled for it anyway. Karl Darlow has since arrived from Leeds United, joining Lammens and 40-year-old Tom Heaton in Carrick’s goalkeeping group, which leaves Vítek with little obvious pathway after signing a new contract only last summer.
