How Real Madrid Could Deploy Erling Haaland or Michael Olise After Pérez’s €150m ‘Galáctico.’ Pledge
Perez pledges a €150 million “Galáctico.” and examines how Madrid can line up with Haaland or Olise.
Voting is almost upon us and both candidates in the race to become Real Madrid’s next president have laid out their grand plans. The incumbent Florentino Pérez has already revealed plans to reinstate José Mourinho as manager and sign defenders Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries. He also promised a record-breaking bid of €150 million ($175 million) for a new “Galáctico.” Pérez, who was speaking on TV show Horizonte, teased the player was a midfielder or forward and not in the Premier League. While he also directly denied the player was Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, several reports have suggested that the London-born France international is, in fact, the mystery man in Pérez’s crosshairs.
Both Erling Haaland and Michael Olise represent very different tactical possibilities for Real Madrid. There is limited flexibility with the City striker. At 6’5″ the Norwegian is the ideal modern striker: both a target man and poacher, deadly in the air and with his feet, as strong as he is quick. Without sacrificing Mbappé, the only realistic accommodation would be to push the Frenchman out to the left, where he often plays for France, with Haaland occupying the middle in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. That configuration leaves little room for Vinicius Junior.
Against weaker opposition Madrid might attempt a 4-4-2, with Mbappé alongside Haaland up top and Vinicius Jr out on the left, but that solution is described in the draft as more appropriate for video games than reality. In a scenario where the other would-be president Riquelme wins, Rodri — another of the promised signings — would be expected to shoulder much of the defensive work in midfield.
Michael Olise offers a different profile. One of the world’s most exciting dribblers, he would immediately add thrust to Madrid’s right-hand side. On paper, a frontline of Vinicius Jr, Mbappé and Olise threatens sluggish defenders. Though he typically operates from the right, the 24-year-old has shown versatility for Bayern Munich, France and previously Crystal Palace, and has the skillset to play more centrally as well.
Barcelona
Gabriel’s United exit stance points toward Europe’s elite
Gabriel’s wish to leave United is tied to the club’s decline, with Madrid and Barcelona possible moves.
JJ Gabriel’s desire to leave Manchester United is being framed as more than a simple contract dispute. According to the report, the teenager and those around him believe the club is too far removed from the standard he wants to chase, with their view shaped by United’s long decline in stature over the past 13 years.
The Daily Mail says that drop-off is the “driving force” behind Gabriel’s stance. The player is understood to want to “learn from the best,” and that assessment appears central to why an immediate exit has become the direction of travel. Earlier reports had linked his frustration to limited first-team opportunities, but this latest version of events places United’s wider decline at the heart of the issue.
Gabriel has already built a reputation for dominating at every age level, including the U-21s, where he scored twice in two appearances against players five years older. That background has made his case even more notable, especially as recent examples elsewhere show that teenagers can be trusted early. Lamine Yamal made his breakthrough at Barcelona as a 15-year-old, while Max Dowman had already featured for Arsenal in the Champions League and Premier League before turning 16.
The report says United are seen as “far away” from five of Europe’s elite clubs that Gabriel would consider joining. Barcelona and Real Madrid are both said to have been strongly linked with the player, who turns 16 in October and can move across Europe through an Irish passport. Gabriel’s father, Joe O’Cearuill, is believed to have already met with both Spanish clubs, with the preference thought to be Madrid.
That said, the report also notes a potential complication. Real Madrid are currently led by José Mourinho, a coach known for valuing experienced professionals over unproven youngsters. Barcelona, meanwhile, are under Hansi Flick, who has two teenagers in his starting XI and regularly places trust in La Masia. Whether Gabriel would break through there remains an open question.

Bayern admiration for JJ Gabriel highlights growing transfer pressure
Bayern’s interest in JJ Gabriel has been acknowledged, while Real Madrid are said to lead the race.
Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund has praised Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel as reports in Germany continue to underline the scale of interest in the teenager.
United are not compelled to agree to Gabriel’s exit request, with his youth contract running until the end of the season. Even so, the 15-year-old is attracting attention from across Europe, with clubs hopeful of persuading him with a clearer path to first-team football.
Speaking to BILD, Freund was careful not to go beyond admiration when asked about Bayern’s involvement. He said: “We know the player because he is very, very talented. An exceptional talent. But I can’t say anything more about it.”
When pressed again on whether Bayern are in talks over a move, Freund replied: “Not at the moment,” although BILD suggested that stance may not tell the full story.
The report claims Bayern have been in “close contact” with Gabriel and his father, who represents him, since February. According to the same account, the Bundesliga champions made their interest clear from that point if an opportunity to sign him emerged.
Bayern are not said to be out of the running, but the early signs point elsewhere. Gabriel and his family are understood to be weighing up options from around Europe, with first-team assurances a key factor. United were reportedly prepared to give him a senior debut during the midweek defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, only days after his exit demand.
Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano said Real Madrid are leading the race for Gabriel, a view since echoed by several outlets in England and Spain. More recently, Mario Cortegana of The Athletic said Madrid are “very confident” of winning the chase for a player whose move would cost no more than €1 million ($1.2 million) in compensation.

Carrick urges caution as Gabriel row grows around United future
Carrick says Gabriel’s welfare comes first as United weigh a 15-year-old’s uncertain future.
Michael Carrick has stressed that the priority in the JJ Gabriel situation must be the teenager’s welfare, wellbeing and exposure, as the debate around the 15-year-old intensifies.
The latest twist is believed to stem from Gabriel’s frustration over limited first-team involvement. He made an unofficial appearance from the bench in preseason, but that remains his only senior involvement so far. The forward is regarded as a major talent, while attention has also turned to his father, Joe O’Cearuill, after allegations of difficult behaviour resurfaced this week. One claim is that Gabriel’s name was changed to make him more marketable.
When it emerged that Gabriel wanted to leave Manchester United, it was suggested Carrick had intended to give him a record-breaking debut against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup. That did not materialise, and it would have been difficult for the manager to do so anyway after United let a 2-0 lead slip and were forced into a frantic search for an equaliser.
Carrick had already spoken to the media before the game, so his post-match comments at Old Trafford were the first chance to address the sudden attention around Gabriel. He avoided discussing the player’s quality or whether his future may lie elsewhere, instead focusing on the fact that the boy’s image has now spread widely.
“I think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation,” Carrick, whose own son, Jacey, is in the United academy and a year older than Gabriel.
“He’s a young boy, and the biggest thing for me, and for the club, is his welfare, wellbeing and exposure. I think all of us have to be really conscious of that in this situation.”
The safeguarding concerns are real. Gabriel requires separate changing facilities from senior players, and his age places him among only three players to have featured in 34 Premier League seasons at 15.
United can still delay matters by refusing to cancel his registration, though his academy deal runs until the end of the season. From next season, the usual route would be a first-year scholar place, with professional terms available when he turns 17 in the second year. A move abroad could come sooner, however, because Irish and Cypriot heritage may allow him access to EU passports. That gives Real Madrid a notable advantage, should he head to Spain when he turns 16 next month.
