Three Defining Mohamed Salah Seasons at Liverpool

A concise ranking of Mohamed Salah’s most influential Liverpool seasons and their key statistics…

Mohamed Salah has provided nine seasons of sustained excellence for Liverpool, and supporters are now preparing mentally for life without their No.11. Arriving in 2017 with the baggage of an unsuccessful stint at Chelsea, Salah has become a transformative figure for Liverpool and the Premier League.

This piece ranks three of his most consequential campaigns for the club, using the details recorded from each term.

1) Premier League title campaign
Matches played: 48
Goal involvements: 23G, 13A
Trophies: 3 (Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup)
The interruption of the season by the coronavirus pandemic has changed how some remember this year, but Liverpool were sensational across the campaign and particularly before soccer’s hiatus in March 2020. Liverpool won 26 of their first 27 Premier League matches that term as they romped to the crown, Salah’s inspiring form leading the charge. A team-high 19 goals helped the Reds end their agonizing wait for a league title. He also produced a memorable moment by latching on to Alisson’s raking pass and scoring Liverpool’s second in their 2–0 Anfield win over Manchester United in Jan. 2020. As the ball rolled beyond the goal-line, it was then the Anfield faithful dared to dream of Premier League glory.

2) Domestic cups and near-quadruple run
Matches played: 51
Goal involvements: 31G, 15A
Trophies: 2 (FA Cup, Carabao Cup)
Liverpool flirted with the unprecedented quadruple during 2021–22, and to come away with just the domestic cups from such an impressive season remains a source of frustration. Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid and another heart-breaking title race with Man City took some of the shine off an astonishing Salah season. It’s little surprise that Salah was once again Liverpool’s top goalscorer in the Premier League and across all competitions, the forward netting 31 times and supplying 15 assists. A three-week spell in October epitomized Salah’s mastery, including an insane solo strike in a stalemate with Manchester City, another in the demolition of Watford, and a hat trick at Old Trafford during Liverpool’s famous 5–0 rout.

3) European glory
Matches played: 52
Goal involvements: 27G, 10A
Trophies: 1 (Champions League)
While not Salah’s most prolific campaign, Liverpool’s Champions League-winning 2019–20 season was one of his most influential. A scorer in the final win over Tottenham Hotspur, his 27th goal of another stunning season, it was Salah’s first major title with the Reds. Salah finished as joint-top scorer alongside fellow African forwards Mané and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Premier League Golden Boot.

Mohamed Salah: The Moments That Defined a Liverpool Career

An assessment of Mohamed Salah’s defining Liverpool moments: goals, finals and unshakeable legacy..

Tears will be shed when Mohamed Salah bids farewell to Liverpool supporters, but what endures are the moments that reshaped the club during his time on Merseyside. Few players have delivered such a sequence of decisive strikes, finals contributions and unforgettable derby goals.

Salah’s introduction at Anfield produced a staggering return — a 44-goal campaign that silenced critics who labelled him a ‘one-season wonder’. That debut season contained one of his most celebrated efforts: a solo run and finish in the Merseyside derby in December 2017 that later earned the FIFA Puskás Award.

Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final in 2018 showcased Salah at full tilt until the final itself in Kyiv. En route he produced a match-winning equalizer at the Etihad Stadium to turn the tie against Manchester City, and a commanding display against Roma in the Anfield semifinal first leg underlined his influence across Europe.

The 2018–19 season brought both near-miss and redemption. Liverpool finished second in the Premier League with 97 points, and Salah produced one of his signature long-range strikes against Chelsea late in that campaign. European solace arrived in Madrid as Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 in the Champions League final. Salah’s composed early penalty set Liverpool on their way. For the first and only time in his career, Salah was a European champion.

Salah’s repertoire of solo goals continued to astound. In October 2021 he weaved past multiple defenders before rifling a low finish past Ederson from a tight angle on his right foot. A trip to Old Trafford delivered another landmark: Salah became the first visiting player to score a Premier League hat trick at Old Trafford in a 5–0 victory, one of several dominant displays against Manchester United including a 7–0 win at Anfield the following season.

When Arne Slot replaced Jürgen Klopp there was understandable uncertainty, but Salah answered any questions on the field. In 2024–25 he produced the best season of his career, maintaining the attacking numbers and moments of brilliance that defined his Liverpool legacy.

Agent Urges Caution Over Mohamed Salah’s Future as Injury and Form Shape Decisions

Abbas Issa warns “beware” of speculation over Salah’s future; injury and form will decide his next steps.

Ramy Abbas Issa has urged caution over speculation about Mohamed Salah’s next club, telling supporters to “beware” of unverified reports and stressing that the forward himself “not know” where he will be in 2026–27. The representative posted the warning on X shortly after Salah’s announcement and sought to curb early conjecture linking the player with the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer, where MLS commissioner Don Garber has publicly opened the door to the U.S. top flight.

Before any decisions can be made, there are immediate concerns to resolve. Salah limped off against Galatasaray on March 18 with a muscular complaint and missed Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Brighton & Hove Albion the following weekend. Manager Arne Slot has been cautious on timelines, noting the physical specimen “can recover faster than other players” but offering no firm dates. The international break has provided Liverpool a buffer, yet it is not certain Salah will be ready to return immediately when club action resumes.

The coming fixtures are significant. Liverpool open April with an FA Cup quarterfinal against Manchester City before travelling to Paris for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain. It should not be forgotten that Liverpool beat the European champions at the Parc des Princes last season, though Salah struggled to get any loose piece of lint or a stray button, let alone any change, out of Nuno Mendes on that night.

Performance levels are another factor in any long-term choice. The forward, a Premier League Golden Boot holder, has endured what is described in this report as his worst campaign by some margin. He has been outscored by 42 players in the division this season, including both Everton strikers Thierno Barry and Beto. How Salah finishes the season, and the role of the impending World Cup, will inform where he chooses to play beyond 2025–26.
