The mix of recent injuries and several players being eased back from lengthy layoffs has prompted a notable change in Arteta’s public position. This represents a significant departure from his familiar stance of deny, deny, deny. “We always have to be prepared,” Arteta told assembled media on Friday. “I mean, the moment that we have an option to touch the squad, to bring to the squad or to protect the squad, depending on what happens, I think we need to be open, for example, on what’s going to happen from here ‘til the window is closed as well.
“It’s football. So we don’t know, but we’re certainly going to be alert and we know where the risk can come in terms of the squad, and be ready just in case we have to do something.”
Financial realities were also referenced. Arsenal are infamously poor sellers: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s £35 million move to Liverpool in 2017 remains the club’s most lucrative departure, with Nicolas Anelka’s move to Real Madrid second. Talk of Myles Lewis-Skelly’s potential departure has been floated as one way to balance the books, but Arteta was unequivocal when asked about sales in January: “At the moment, it’s very clear that there’s no option to do that.” The manager added that, so far, every warm body has been called upon and will continue to be required as the Gunners pursue honours on four fronts.

Mikel Arteta confirmed that Bukayo Saka was withdrawn from the squad for Saturday’s win over Leeds United after picking up “a little niggle” in the warm-up. The injury was the only notable setback on a positive day for Arsenal ahead of the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

Arteta praised the new arrival for his attitude and preparation. “The way he prepares, the way he’s waiting for opportunity, I think he paid off today because he really impacted the team,” the manager said, highlighting Madueke’s readiness to fill the role.
On the collective task, Arteta added: “We talked before the game, it’s going to be a long game, we’re going to have to navigate through different moments in the game, and we’re going to need everybody fulfilling the role that they have on the day, and I think the players executed that incredibly well.”
Madueke is the leading candidate to occupy the right wing when Arsenal face his former club on Tuesday, though Arteta’s squad contains several possible options for the position.
