Maresca handed one-match touchline ban and fined after late sending-off

Enzo Maresca given one-match touchline ban and fined £8,000 after his dismissal in the 96th minute.

The Football Association has sanctioned Enzo Maresca after his dismissal late in Chelsea’s win over Liverpool, handing the manager a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine. The FA set out the reasons for the punishment in a formal notice on Wednesday.

“It was alleged that the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal around the 96th minute,” the FA said. Maresca admitted the charge and accepted the financial penalty.

Maresca addressed the incident while speaking at the Festival dello Sport di Trento. “It was a huge emotion. It’s my second season at Chelsea and it was the first time we won at home in the last minute. Sending off? Many times football is passion, instinct. I probably didn’t have time to think. It was an instinctive reaction, but I think it was worth it,” the Italian manager said.

The suspension arrives amid a run of dismissals affecting Chelsea. The trio of Robert Sánchez, Trevoh Chalobah and João Pedro were sent off recently across the Premier League and Champions League. Including Maresca’s red card, Chelsea have seen a player or manager dismissed in four of their last five matches.

Maresca dismissed the wider implications of that sequence when asked about the club’s disciplinary record. “For me personally, it’s not any concern or issue, it’s just a moment probably you need to take a different option and avoid. Sometimes it’s better to concede the goal or the chance because then it’s 11 vs. 11,” Maresca said of Sánchez’s and Chalobah’s sending offs against Manchester United and Brighton respectively.

Chelsea will be without their manager on the touchline for the next match as the club moves on from the late drama that followed a stoppage-time victory over Liverpool. The fine and the ban conclude the FA’s action on the incident.

Chelsea Unmoved by Caicedo Agent Change After Public Statement Reversal

Chelsea insist Caicedo’s change of agent will not affect his long-term future at the club No effect.

Chelsea have indicated they are not worried about Moisés Caicedo’s future at Stamford Bridge following an awkward public episode over his representation. The midfielder’s earlier statement, which included the line “now appointed people he can trust,” was widely noticed and then removed from his social media account.

Sierra helped oversee Caicedo’s £115 million ($153.5 million) move to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023. Ali Barat also assisted on that deal. The statement specifically distanced the player from Barat, who runs the Epic agency.

BBC Sport reported that no “ill will” had been intended towards his former representation and that the wording used by his new representative was unfortunately clumsy and “awkward.” The timing coincided with renewed links to a move to Real Madrid, but Chelsea sources were quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying the club “have no concern” the saga and change of agent will affect Caicedo’s long-term future.

The Ecuador international is under contract until at least 2031 with an option to 2032, and the club expects matters to remain stable. Those close to the situation describe him as a “humble character” not interested in public personal enhancement.

Background on the agents involved includes Chris Farnell and IPS Law, who count a young Cristiano Ronaldo, from his days as a Manchester United player, among former clients.

Despite the size of his transfer and interest from other clubs, including Liverpool’s willingness to pay £111 million, Caicedo was not an instant success at Chelsea. Now into his third season, the 23-year-old is increasingly justifying the faith placed in him. He has been an ever-present in the Premier League and Champions League so far this season and has captained the side when more senior leaders were unavailable.

On recent form, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville offered strong praise. “I think he’s the best midfield player in the league at this moment in time and I think I’m comfortable saying that,” Neville said on his self-titled Sky Sports podcast.

Caicedo Ends Agent Relationship, Chooses Family Advice Amid Links to Real Madrid

Caicedo has split from his two agents, opting for family advice after a £115m move to Chelsea.

Moisés Caicedo has confirmed he has ended his working relationship with the two agents who guided his move to Chelsea. The midfielder announced the split on his social media account, saying: “Chelsea Football Club star Moisés Caicedo has separated from and is no longer represented by his former agent Manuel Sierra of Football Division Worldwide and he is not represented by Ali Barat of Epic.”

The post added: “The contract ended on Aug. 14, 2025, and the player has now appointed people that he can trust.” That message was later deleted from the account.

Sierra and Barat had been appointed in January 2023. Sierra publicly criticised Brighton after the 2023 winter transfer window, saying “this is an opportunity that may not be repeated in life,” following Brighton’s rejection of two bids from Arsenal. Despite that dispute, Sierra and Barat later facilitated Caicedo’s £115 million move to Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

Reports suggest the terse wording of Caicedo’s social post prompted speculation of a fractious split. BBC Sport report that there is no “ill will” between Caicedo and his former representatives and that the decision reflects a change in how the player prefers to manage his affairs. He has chosen to be advised by his family without formal agent oversight.

Caicedo has previously expressed gratitude toward his representatives. When Barat received the Golden Agent Award in 2023, Caicedo said: “You deserve it for all the work you did in 2023 to bring me to Chelsea, making one of my childhood dreams come true. Now it’s my turn to make history in this club. I love you.” Barat also noted the financial improvement the player experienced, pointing out his weekly pay rose from £60,000 at Brighton to £150,000 at Chelsea.

Before the split, Barat told The Telegraph in September that Caicedo was “happy at Chelsea.” The midfielder’s change in representation ends a chapter that began on the south coast and carried him to Chelsea for a major transfer fee.

Maresca Accepts Red Card After Celebrations but Chelsea’s Red-Card Run Continues

Maresca accepts his sending off after celebrating a last-minute winner; discipline concerns persist

Published

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has conceded that his dismissal for celebrating a stoppage-time winner against Liverpool felt justifiable in the moment, even as the club’s disciplinary record has come under fresh scrutiny.

A group of blue shirts gathered in the corner after the late goal and Maresca joined them to take in the moment at Chelsea’s home ground. As the usually reserved coach acknowledged at the Trento Sports Festival last week, the feeling was powerful. “[It was a] nice emotion,” Maresca told assembled spectators at the Trento Sports Festival last week. “It’s the second season for me in this club but we had never won at home at the last minute.”

Maresca noted he had managed his reactions in other dramatic finishes. He contained himself for Tyrique George’s stoppage-time winner against Fulham last April and “didn’t quite head for the corner flag” after Reece James secured a 2–2 draw with Bournemouth in January courtesy of a 95th-minute free-kick.

On the Liverpool incident he said: “The reaction that led to the expulsion was instinctive, but maybe it was worth it,” he grinned.

The dismissal followed a first-half booking for arguing too strongly for a penalty; Maresca then received a second yellow for leaving his technical area and was sent off. The club’s recent run of dismissals means Maresca’s sending off was Chelsea’s fourth red card in the space of five games.

Before Liverpool’s trip to west London, Maresca had insisted he had no concerns about the club’s red-card record. His latest suspension, however, does not exactly encourage an atmosphere of undiluted discipline.
