According to BBC Sport, Chelsea were reluctant to add another central striker into a rotation that could soon include Emegha. The 22-year-old Dutch forward has spent two years with the Blues’ sister club in France and has attracted attention with his progress at Strasbourg.
Strasbourg paid €13 million (£11.3 million, $15.2 million) to sign Emegha from Sturm Graz in 2023. Since then he has scored 26 goals in 64 appearances and was named Liam Rosenior’s captain this summer following the departure of Habib Diarra and the return of loanee Andrey Santos to Chelsea.
Chelsea view Emegha as a player capable of playing for the club in the future, and the decision to stick with Guiu is said to preserve a clearer pathway should the Blues choose to pursue him. Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this summer that talks over a future move to Chelsea for Emegha were already being held. It is even claimed there could be a pre-agreement to guarantee the young striker a move to Stamford Bridge as soon as the summer of 2026.
There was also reported interest in Conrad Harder from Sporting CP before his transfer to RB Leipzig, but Chelsea chose not to re-enter the market. That choice leaves Guiu and João Pedro as the only recognised central strikers in Enzo Maresca’s squad for now.
A final prognosis on Liam Delap’s injury remains pending. Initial estimates put his absence at around eight weeks, but there are suggestions he could be sidelined for longer than that timeframe. For the moment Chelsea have balanced short-term cover with a strategy designed to protect the club’s route to a possible future signing.
