United weigh Emiliano Martínez as Lammens pursuit intensifies

Manchester United have explored Emiliano Martínez as a late alternative while simultaneously improving their offer for Senne Lammens. The prospect of a move for Martínez emerged after United advanced their pursuit of a new goalkeeper and returned to Antwerp with an enhanced bid for the 23-year-old Belgian.
United’s initial approach for Lammens was worth around £17.3 million ($23.4 million), and the club have now tabled a higher offer, according to The Telegraph. There is no fee detailed for the second bid, though Antwerp are said to be prepared to let their goalkeeper leave for “upwards of £20 million.” Personal terms with Lammens have not yet been agreed.
Lammens had been omitted from Antwerp’s last two fixtures while following an individual training programme. Stef Wils confirmed that decision, saying: “That’s a logical decision,” Wils shrugged. “Since this could be a major outgoing transfer, we want to minimise the risk of injuries.”
The Lancastrian club’s recent form in goal has added urgency to the search. In the wake of United’s scratchy 3–2 victory over Burnley on Saturday, the fourth successive game of the season in which there has been a shot-stopping error for the hosts, Amorim lamented: “It’s hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.”
That pressure has widened United’s options and opened the door to Martínez, the World Cup winner who has attracted a late approach. Any move for Martínez would be complicated and discussions have, informally, included the possibility of a swap involving Jadon Sancho.
Sancho has seen multiple potential moves collapse this summer after a failure to agree suitable personal terms. The situation recalls Marcus Rashford’s loan to Villa Park last season, when he too left his parent club to revive his form after being surplus to requirements under Amorim.
At present, United’s goalkeeper recruitment remains in flux: the club have an improved proposal for Lammens while maintaining interest in Martínez as a backup route should negotiations with Antwerp stall.

A later report from The Athletic named Roberto Olabe as the man lined up to succeed Monchi, saying Villa have hammered out a deal with the Spaniard known for his work with Real Sociedad. Olabe, 57, left the San Sebastian club at the end of last season.
Over the past seven years Olabe was involved in the buying and selling of players such as Alexander Isak, Martín Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, while Martin Ødegaard also passed through in a crucial period of his career. He is additionally credited with work overseeing sporting strategy at Independiente del Valle at a time when Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié and others were produced by the Ecuadorian club.
Club officials are reported to be moving to implement the change quickly. For now, Aston Villa face the immediate challenge of reversing early-season results while the club’s sporting leadership is reconfigured.
