Manchester United CEO Collette Roche has confirmed the club is making quiet progress on plans for a new stadium, which the club expects to open in 2032. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously estimated completion in 2030, but Roche said the timetable will stretch later because of the preparatory work required.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think when we launched the idea of a new stadium 12 months ago, we did say it would take between four and five years for construction and that\u2019s right,\u201d said Roche. \u201cBut I think people read that as we might have the stadium ready for 2030. But as you know, with a stadium build as complex as the one that we\u2019re going to enter into, it does take one or two years to get ready for construction, to get the land assembled, to get the funds in place and to get the planning permission.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo that’s the part that we\u2019re doing right now. So we\u2019ve not named a date for opening, but we are on track within those timescales.\u201d<\/p>\n
While United already own the site of their current Old Trafford home, the proposed project requires an expansion into surrounding land and negotiations over those purchases have proven problematic up to this point. Roche said much of the immediate work is focused on the preparatory phase rather than on visible construction.<\/p>\n
Roche also insisted progress has been made \u201cbehind the scenes\u201d and indicated supporters should expect further information soon. She framed the work as detailed and sequential: securing land, arranging finance and obtaining planning permission before construction can begin.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the examples of progress we\u2019ve made are first and foremost in land assembly,\u201d said Roche. The club has not announced a firm opening date, but Roche stressed the original four-to-five-year construction estimate remains the correct measure for the build itself once those preparatory steps are complete.<\/p>\n
For now the emphasis from United\u2019s leadership is on completing the groundwork so that, when building starts, the project can proceed within the anticipated construction window.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
