Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended prison sentence in Greece following a retrial over his 2020 arrest on the island of Mykonos.<\/p>\n
It has already been reported that an appeal against the new conviction, which has reduced the suspended sentence and dropped the fine, is intended. The new appeal will have to go to Greece\u2019s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
Maguire was arrested while on holiday in Aug. 2020 after police were called following a fight outside a bar involving his family. The England international was detained for two days and put on trial on a neighboring island only four days after the incident. An appeal was lodged against the original conviction and the retrial was delayed for an extended period before concluding this year.<\/p>\n
Maguire has always strongly denied the allegations and charges against him, while the prosecution denied accusations of corruption at any point in the proceedings. The 32-year-old will not serve jail time because of the nature of the sentence, and the report notes an unlikeliness that he will ever return to Greece. Nonetheless, the presence of a second guilty verdict and his determination to clear his name will continue to hang over him.<\/p>\n
For now the matter looks set to proceed through the Greek appeal system. Given the protracted wait for a retrial, it could still be a considerable time before the next stage is heard.<\/p>\n
On a day-to-day basis the conviction does not change Maguire\u2019s routine. He has been getting on with his life and his career since the original trial. All Maguire can do now is focus on his career.
