Filipe Lu\u00eds has moved from a celebrated but sudden end at Flamengo to one of the most intriguing managerial options available this season. Sacked by Flamengo, the former Chelsea and Atl\u00e9tico Madrid fullback is now a decorated coach on the open market at a time several clubs are reconsidering their dugouts.<\/p>\n
Flamengo\u2019s decision leaves Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among the teams who could benefit. Real Madrid have offered few assurances to \u00c1lvaro Arbeloa\u2019s long-term future and the coming summer, complicated by World Cup upheaval, will present limited windows for change.<\/p>\n
Lu\u00eds\u2019s managerial rise was rapid. After nine months working in Flamengo\u2019s youth system, the former student of Diego Simeone and Jos\u00e9 Mourinho was promoted to senior management a month after turning 39. Flamengo won the Copa do Brasil weeks later. Taking over from former Brazil national team boss Tite, Lu\u00eds amassed three trophies and one defeat across his first 30 games.<\/p>\n
His teams blended possession principles with a willingness to play out from the back, drawing stylistic comparisons to Roberto De Zerbi. Flamengo also claimed continental success and recorded a 3\u20131 victory over Chelsea in last summer\u2019s Club World Cup group stage. \u201cThey are a very good team, they play nice football, it\u2019s nice to watch them,\u201d then-Blues boss Enzo Maresca gushed. \u201cThe reason they are unbeaten in Brazil for many games and are doing very well is, when you watch them, you see they are a very good team with good organization. Chelsea\u2019s hierarchy interviewed Lu\u00eds after parting company with Maresca in January, per The Telegraph, but the club ultimately opted for Liam Rosenior, reportedly influenced by Flamengo\u2019s buyout demands. That buyout is no longer relevant.<\/p>\n
Flamengo had offered Lu\u00eds a two-year contract in December but dismissed him two months later amid poor results. Lu\u00eds began the new domestic season with four points from three games and lost two minor finals in 2026, the Brazilian Supercopa to Corinthians and the Recopa Sudamericana across two legs. Flamengo are expected to pay the 40-year-old around $3.5 million.<\/p>\n
