Luke Shaw was forced off midway through the first half of Manchester United\u2019s clash with Crystal Palace after a heavy collision with Daniel Mu\u00f1oz. Shaw, 30, arrived first to stab the ball away but Mu\u00f1oz\u2019s momentum carried him forward and he planted his full weight on the top of Shaw\u2019s left foot. After a brief burst of treatment from United\u2019s medical department the left back was taken off and replaced by Noussair Mazraoui in the 24th minute.<\/p>\n
United fell behind early when Maxence Lacroix opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Shaw\u2019s contact injury compounded a difficult opening to the game. A lightened calendar at Manchester United has been credited with aiding Shaw\u2019s sustained fitness levels, and the nature of this problem was clearly a contact injury rather than one linked to load management.<\/p>\n
The season\u2019s structure will give Shaw limited time to recover. Manchester United will play only 40 competitive games this season and Sunday\u2019s visit from Palace was the club\u2019s second match in 18 days. There are little more than 76 hours between the final whistle on the weekend and the upcoming trip to St James\u2019s Park on Wednesday evening. Shaw will have until Sunday, March 15 to prepare for the club\u2019s subsequent Premier League fixture against Aston Villa.<\/p>\n
Newcastle\u2019s recent domestic form offers some consolation; the Magpies lost their third straight top-flight home match on Saturday for the first time during Eddie Howe\u2019s near half-decade on Tyneside. \u201cIn relation to the Premier League, our form has not been good enough for a while,\u201d the manager admitted after this weekend\u2019s 3\u20132 reverse at the hands of Everton.
