John Terry has publicly criticised Chelsea\u2019s decision-making around the transitional period after Enzo Maresca\u2019s sacking. The former captain says he was not offered a role in the senior matchday set-up when the club turned to the Under-21 coach Calum McFarlane on New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
Chelsea appointed McFarlane, who brought members of the youth backroom staff with him, for the immediate senior fixtures. Terry said he was present with the 21s group for the trip and expected to be included. \u201cFor me, being in the building and being part of the 21s group recently when they took the Man City game, I didn\u2019t get the call or didn\u2019t get included in that,\u201d Terry told Jimmy Bullard in an episode on GOLF LIFE. \u201cI wasn\u2019t annoyed, but probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that 21s group that went over.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, even if I didn\u2019t take the team\u2014Calum took the team, did really well and got a result out of the game\u2014I feel like I should have been part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
McFarlane\u2019s first senior appointment was a 1\u20131 draw with Manchester City, a side managed by Pep Guardiola. \u201cI\u2019m feeling good, feeling calm,\u201d the 40-year-old reflected after the match. Terry later added: \u201cNow, listen, people have got to make decisions,\u201d he added, \u201cI love when people make decisions and go: \u2018Yes or no.\u2019 Clearly, the ownership, sporting directors, whoever makes that decision, go, \u2018No,\u2019 not to include me for whatever reason, I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n
The episode revived memories of Frank Lampard\u2019s short-term return as interim manager under previous ownership. Lampard, who had 18 months in charge at Stamford Bridge under Roman Abramovich and guided the club to 12th in 2022\u201323, offered his own critique of interim conditions. \u201cI saw things that I know cannot be right at elite football and that\u2019s the truth,\u201d the current Coventry City boss told Sky Sports News last March.<\/p>\n
Lampard added: \u201cI didn\u2019t love working in that short period because it\u2019s hard to lay down an idea when you\u2019re going to be leaving, but Chelsea will always be a massive club in my life.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut when I understand the standards of Chelsea\u2014in that period of time a lot of players were in transition of maybe leaving and some problems and motivation were a problem\u2014in an interim period you can\u2019t really affect that.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you see the results of it, I\u2019m experienced enough to know what\u2019s right and what\u2019s wrong and basic things in a training ground on a pitch.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t learn anything tactical but it did reinforce my beliefs of all my experiences of when you know what a group is really fighting in the same direction\u2014how strong that can be and when it\u2019s not, it can be really challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rosenior was later appointed permanently. McFarlane departed the touchline for his second match as head coach, a 2\u20131 loss to Fulham, but subsequently joined Rosenior\u2019s backroom staff.
