Matheus Cunha has offered a concise diagnosis of why Ruben Amorim\u2019s ideas did not take hold at Manchester United. Signed in the summer to help implement Amorim\u2019s system, Cunha said external pressure and scrutiny distorted how the project was judged.<\/p>\n
“The pressure for that tactic to work was so great that we forgot how simple the overall context was and focused too much on the negative,” Cunha confessed to DAZN .<\/p>\n
He argued that some elements of the 3-4-2-1 shape remained in use even after the manager\u2019s departure and cautioned against over-interpreting formations.<\/p>\n
“Being very honest, I think the numerology of football is very misleading,” he continued. “We attack in different ways and end up defending in the formation that everyone says is Ruben\u2019s.”<\/p>\n
Cunha praised Amorim\u2019s role off the pitch as well as his recruitment. The forward pointed out that Amorim helped bring in several players who have since established themselves at United, including Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha himself. “I was always very grateful for everything Ruben did,” Cunha said. “It\u2019s very easy, when things change, to look at what came before as only problems. But it\u2019s quite the opposite. He was an incredible person.<\/p>\n
“Many new players came because of him, so I think he also plays a big part in the success we are having now.”<\/p>\n
Cunha added that he is enjoying life under interim manager Michael Carrick. United sit fourth in the Premier League table, a position Cunha linked in part to a run of four wins and a draw from five games under Carrick, including victories over Arsenal and Manchester City. Cunha also credited Amorim with improving dressing-room culture and noted the squad assembled under the Portuguese did not exhibit the behind-the-scenes issues previously reported at the club.
