Liverpool are preparing for a summer review of Arne Slot\u2019s position that will be heavily influenced by the club\u2019s Champions League outcome. Fabrizio Romano states that Liverpool see qualifying for Europe\u2019s top competition as “absolutely crucial” and that failing to secure a place would trigger an end-of-season assessment of Slot\u2019s future.<\/p>\n
Club officials have previously shown significant support for Slot, particularly during a run of four wins in 15 games which also sparked the ire of the legendary Mohamed Salah . That backing, however, could come under strain if Liverpool do not reach the Champions League when the season ends.<\/p>\n
Sitting 16 points behind leaders Arsenal, Liverpool\u2019s bid for back-to-back titles ended months ago. The immediate priority is to regain Champions League status and the financial benefits it brings after a season of record-breaking spending. As gameweek 27 approaches, Liverpool trail rivals who are equally determined to claim qualification.<\/p>\n
England is likely to be awarded an extra spot in the Champions League this season. Rather than the typical top four, there will almost certainly be five English teams in the Champions League next season, but that extended access does not help Liverpool at present.<\/p>\n
Current Premier League positions underline the challenge. Aston Villa sit 3rd on 50 points, Man Utd are 4th with 45, Chelsea are 5th with 44, Liverpool sit 6th with 42 and Brentford are 7th with 40. Liverpool are two points behind Chelsea, three behind Manchester United and eight adrift of Aston Villa. The fixture list still gives Slot\u2019s side a route back: Liverpool\u2019s final four matches are against United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford in May, creating a decisive and nerve-testing run-in.<\/p>\n
Results so far this year have been mixed. January produced a 0\u20130 draw with Arsenal alongside dropped points against Leeds United, Fulham, Burnley and Bournemouth. An emphatic 4\u20131 win over Newcastle United later that month illustrated the inconsistencies that have dogged the team.<\/p>\n
On paper the next few weeks offer a comparatively favourable run. Upcoming fixtures include Nottm Forest (A) Feb. 22, West Ham (H) Feb. 28, Wolves (A) March 3, Tottenham (H) March 15 and Brighton (A) March 21.
