Marco Rossi, manager of the Hungary national team, has reiterated that Dominik Szoboszlai grew up with one clear club dream: Real Madrid. Rossi, who gave Szoboszlai his international debut seven years ago, said the sentiment has been present since the player\u2019s earliest days in the sport. “From what I\u2019ve heard and what I know, and given the very good and direct relationship I\u2019ve had with Dominik since he started playing football as a child, Real Madrid has been his dream,” Rossi told winwin this week.<\/p>\n
Rossi balanced that observation with caution about whether the move might ever materialise. “I don\u2019t know if he wants to join Real Madrid or not, but at the same time, he\u2019s currently playing for Liverpool, a big team in the English Premier League,” he added. “I don\u2019t know if he can take this step, because it depends on his personal decision, as well as the decision of his club.” He also did not rule out Szoboszlai remaining at Anfield. “I don\u2019t rule out the possibility of him staying at Liverpool and renewing his contract there, especially since he is highly valued within the club,” Rossi noted. “He is a very important player for Liverpool, and Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”<\/p>\n
Contract negotiations at Liverpool remain unresolved. The 25-year-old is under contract until the summer of 2028, and Szoboszlai admitted progress on an extension has stalled. “Nothing yet, to be honest,” he said at the start of February. “Nothing, from now on … it is not in my hands. It works this way. There is no progression but if the right offer comes then let\u2019s see.” He also expressed affection for the club and the city while remaining non-committal. “Let\u2019s see what happens, hopefully everyone will be happy at the end,” he said. “Of course [I want to stay]. I like the city, I like the club, I like playing with these guys, I love Anfield, I love the fans, let\u2019s see what the future holds.<\/p>\n
“It is not on me,” he added. “I would love to [stay]. We will see.”<\/p>\n
The transfer narrative has broader context. Liverpool signed Szoboszlai in 2023 after losing out to Real Madrid in the race for Jude Bellingham. Real Madrid have also reshaped their midfield since Toni Kroos left in 2024 and Luka Modri\u0107 departed 12 months later. Back at Liverpool, coach Arne Slot praised Szoboszlai\u2019s development after his goal in the FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion. “Dominik is great example of the model we are using at this club,” Slot said. “We sign young players from another league, this situation [RB] Leipzig, where he was already known as a player for being really physical.<\/p>\n
